Look up and get lost in the Stars

13.

There are many stars in the sky tonight but only one shines through my heart and that is you - unknown

I woke up early in Jamie's guestroom just across from his room the morning after the party. I was leaving my car in Jamie's driveway while I was gone and he was going to be taking me to the airport.

I checked the time on my phone and saw that I had to leave in about an hour to make sure I made the flight with enough time.

I went quickly to the ensuite washroom and washed and everything, before packing all of my stuff back into my suitcase and then changing quickly. I left the room and pulled my luggage behind me and carried it down the stairs.

I left it at the bottom of the stairs and heard the TV playing in the living room; I walked over and leaned against the door frame. Jamie was sitting in a pair of his Under Armor shorts on the couch watching a video of their latest game.

"You just like looking at yourself or something?" I asked him playfully.

He turned and smiled at me, "Trying to spot you in the crowd," he said.

I snorted and made my way over to him, "How are you feeling today?" I asked him, taking a seat beside him.

He shrugged and looked back to the screen, "Good, not hung over or anything. You?"

"Fine," I told him.

He looked down at me and smiled sadly, "We have to get going soon, eh?"

I bit my lip and nodded, "Yeah...about forty minutes I guess."

"Are you hungry? Do you want me to make you something?" he asked me.

I smiled and nodded, "Yes please!" I said teasingly.

He smirked and stood up, "Only because you're so darn cute," he said before walking back towards the kitchen.

I sighed and leaned back on the couch. I looked around and stood up, deciding to really take a look at the photos that he had on the mantel above the fireplace. I walked over and started on the left hand side.

There were pictures of his parents, him, Jordie and Jenny when they were kids. I started walking slowly along and saw pictures of them as they got older, Jordie and Jamie playing hockey on a rink, Jenny with her brothers. The family at Jenny's graduation, as well as Jamie's and Jordie's. Jamie with other family members that I didn't know. Then there were photos from their drafts. Jamie looked so happy in his photo wearing the Dallas jersey. There were some from some trips with some of the team, quite of few with Tyler.

I smiled even more when I saw a couple of the last photos in frames there, one was of Jamie and I one of the nights we went to the club which Jessica had taken for us. The second was a selfie taken on Jamie's phone of me and him one night when we hung out at my place, I was sticking my tongue out and Jamie was smiling and looking at me.

"See something you like?" I heard him ask.

I smiled without turning around, "I like that one," I said tapping the frame of the selfie photo of the two of us.

He walked up and stood next to me, "That's definitely one of my favourites."

I smiled and continued to look at it before Jamie spoke again, "Food's ready, eh?"

I nodded and looked at him, "Thank-you," I said with a smile before heading to the kitchen where he laid out our two plates with food on them, eggs, turkey bacon and some fruit.

I took my plate and fork over to the little nook that was in the kitchen just overlooking the backyard and sat down with Jamie sitting across from me.

We aimlessly talked for a little while we ate.

"This feels nice," Jamie commented when we were both done.

I smiled and nodded, "It does," I agreed.

He shrugged and looked out the window, "I could definitely get used to eating with you every day."

I blushed and was thankful that he wasn't looking at me right then, "Oh really?" I asked.

He hummed and looked over at me with a smile, "I liked it."

I laughed and shook my head, "You asking me to move in with you or something?" I asked playfully, as I put my elbow on the table and rested my chin on my open palm.

His face went a slight shade of red, "I'm saying...that I meant what I said last night...that you make me feel like I'm at home too...that I'd be happy to make you a key and that you could stay here whenever you want."

"You didn't answer my question," I said quietly.

He smiled a little at me and looked down at the table for a second before looking back up at me, "I'm saying that I really think things are gonna be good for us in the New Year. And you know that I want to be with you...I like to think that you want to be with me too...and I think that I can see, this time next year, you having your stuff here, sleeping in my room instead of the guestroom."

I smiled and dropped my sight to the table trying to gather my thoughts which were all scrambled. How should I be feeling? Should I be weirded out because he was almost proposing us living together when we weren't together? If that's how I should be feeling...then why was I feeling overjoyed and happy at the thought of living with him one day?

"I think," I started, as I made eye contact with him, "that, that is definitely doable."

He smiled brightly at me and nodded a couple times, "Okay," he said easily.

I grinned and looked out the window at the backyard again, Jamie got up after a moment, "I'm gonna get ready and then we should probably head out, make sure you get there in time," he said as he took my plate and his to the dishwasher.

--

"Okay," I said outside of his Range Rover as it idled at the drop off area.

He smiled at me, "I'll miss you," he told me.

"I'll miss you too, Jamie," I told him, "Have a Merry Christmas! Tell your family I said hi and Merry Christmas too!"

He laughed and nodded, "I'll tell them! Make sure you tell your family that I said to have a Merry Christmas too!

I smiled and looked behind me at the busy airport before looking back at him, "I have to go," I said quietly.

He nodded with a small smile on his face, "I know," he whispered back to me.

He reached out and grabbed me, pulling me to him quickly and roughly for a tight hug that I returned with just as much vigor. I was going to miss him more than I cared to admit. I was so excited to go home and spend the holiday with my family...but I couldn’t wait to see him again. I couldn't wait to spend New Year's with him.

"Have a safe flight," he mumbled into my hair.

"You too, Jamie," I said, feeling my throat begin to tingle and tighten.

He pulled away from me, "You text me the second you land, I wanna know that you're safe, okay?"

I smiled and wiped at my eyes under my glasses, "I will," I said with my voice cracking.

He smiled sadly, "Hey, we'll be together again before you know it, right?"

I nodded and smiled up at him, "Just a week right, we've done longer."

"Exactly," he grinned, "Have fun at home, love."

"You too," I said, taking a step back from his embrace.

He leaned down and quickly caught my lips with his in a sweet and gentle kiss. We broke apart and I bit my lip and looked down.

"Don’t worry, there'll be more of that when you come back," he said teasingly.

I laughed and looked up at him, "I gotta get in there," I said, blindly grabbing for my luggage handle behind me.

"See you soon, Josie," he said, letting his hands fall from my waist.

I grabbed onto the handle and shifted my carryon bag and purse onto my shoulder from the ground, "See you, Jamie," I responded, before turning and walking through the sliding doors. I looked over my shoulder for one last look at him. He was still standing there, obviously. He had a small smile on his face, he lifted his hand up to wave at me and I did the same as I smiled at him.

I lowered my hand and continued my trek into the airport, breezing through security and making my way to the sitting area near where my flight would be leaving from.

I took out my phone and continued watching Stranger Things on Netflix for the third time. After an episode and a half my plane began to call the passengers.

The ride was uneventful. I even managed to get a bit of sleep before the flight attendant woke me up just before landing. I wasted no time getting off of the plane. I was beginning to feel so excited again to see everyone. I was already missing Jamie severely...but I wouldn't let that stand in the way of my happiness in seeing everyone for the first time since the end of summertime.

I grabbed my luggage when it finally came through on the baggage claim and pulled it off, onto the floor lifting up the handle and dragging it behind me to get to the arrival area where I would be meeting everyone. I walked through the sliding doors and I wouldn’t' have been able to miss my family if I had walked through the doors blindfolded. The twins were holding up a sign with my name on it. The others were watching for me and when they saw me they began cheering and yelling at me. I never said my family was quiet.

I laughed as I walked over to them, dad and Eric came and took my carry-on and my luggage before they hugged me and welcomed me back to Canada Land. I hugged everyone quickly since I just wanted to get back home.

We got into the van and drove off to the house, everyone was chattering so it didn't really leave any room for a small nap before the half an hour car ride was over.

We all pilled back out of the van and I looked up at the house, becoming overwhelmed with memories. I smiled as small brown haired twins Scotty and Sammy took each of my hands and pulled me into the house. Once the door opened I breathed in deeply and snapped my head over to Callie who was grinning behind me.

"Is...is that Nanny's homemade special chili?" I asked her as my mouth watered a little bit.

She smiled wider at me, "Maybe," she teased.

"Is she here?" I asked quickly.

Callie nodded and I smiled just as Nanny walked out of the kitchen.

"There she is!" the little white haired lady said to me with a kind smile.

"Hi Nanny!" I said embracing her, "I missed you!" I told her when I pulled away.

Nanny was Callie's mom. She had been in my life just as long as Callie had been, and she and PopPop had welcomed us into their family with open arms, and I loved them just as much as I loved my maternal and paternal grandparents.

"Where's PopPop?" I asked as she led me down our long hallway to the kitchen.

"Oh, he'll be here soon!" she told me walking over to the stove, she lifted the lid off of the huge pot that was on the burner and the aroma got more intense and I just looked at her.

"Is it done yet?!" I asked.

She laughed at me, "Almost! You need some patience!"

"I have patience!" I told her, sitting on a stool at the island.

She looked at me through narrow eyes, "You've lost weight," she said.

I laughed and nodded, "I go to the gym, Nanny! That's the point!"

"I think you get enough cardio from dragging those big earrings around," she said with a smirk as I gasped.

"Nanny!" I said with a small laugh, as my face turned red.

"What happened?" dad asked when the rest of the group walked into the kitchen.

"Nothing!" I said quickly just as Nanny spoke.

"She's got bling!" she said, pointing to me with a spoon.

"Oh my God," I groaned covering my face.

"Wait, those are real?" Eve asked me, sitting on the stool next to me.

"It's not a big deal," I sighed looking at everyone.

"Are they from Jamie?" Callie asked me.

"Maybe," I muttered while looking away from everyone.

"They are!" Brody said with a laugh from the other side of the island,as he pushed his dark blonde hair our of his green eyes.

"Josie got a boyfriend! Josie got a boyfriend!" he twins began chanting as the others in the room began laughing.

I laughed and shook my head as I slipped of the stool, "I'm bringing my stuff upstairs!" I said as they all continued laughing and chanting at me.

I went to the front door and grabbed my luggage and carryon bag, and I grabbed my phone from my purse. I managed to get everything up there I opened the door to my room and smiled. Just the way I had left it last time. Well, Callie came in and made my bed it looked like, but other than that it didn't look like anyone had touched it.

I closed the door behind me and took my phone out of my pocket, finding Jamie’s number easily and dialing it, putting it on speaker as I went.

"Hey," he said, cheerily after a few seconds of ringing.

"Hey back," I said as I opened my suitcase.

"Did you just land? Was the flight late? I checked it out online, it didn't say it was late or anything," he told me.

I laughed a little and took out my makeup and toiletries bag, tossing it onto my bed, "Were you watching my flight?" I asked him, in a playfully accusing voice.

"Maybe," he said shyly.

I laughed and pulled my clothes out of my luggage, "I'm sorry I didn't get to text you right when I landed, I was just anxious to get off of the plane and then everyone was there...it was hectic," I said with a sigh.

"That's okay," he said briskly, "I knew it landed so that made it better for me."

I smiled and zipped my now empty luggage back up, "I wanted to let you know I was home," I said quietly, sitting on my bed and picking my phone up, and bringing it closer to my face.

"I'm glad you called," he told me.

"Are you almost done packing?" I asked, knowing he was leaving in the early afternoon the next day for Victoria.

"Just about," he said sighing.

"I should probably get back down to them, even though they were all making fun of me," I said with a small laugh.

"Why?" he asked.

I hummed, "Because of my earrings, they all laughed because they're from you."

He laughed on the other end, "Oh really? Is it funny?" he asked still laughing.

I giggled and laid back on my bed, "The twins thought they'd be funny and starting chanting, literally actually chanting, that I had a boyfriend. And everyone else started laughing."

He began laughing again on his end, "That's awesome!"

Soft knocks were at my door suddenly, "Just a second," I said quietly to Jamie before putting the phone next to me on the pillow and sitting up.

"Come in!" I called.

The door opened and Eve was standing there with a small smile, "Are you busy?" she asked me quietly. Looking at her was like looking at a mini Callie. Blonde hair and deep blue eyes.

I shook my head, "Never too busy for you," I smiled, "Come in!" I said.

She walked in and closed the door quietly behind her, "I'm just finishing up talking to Jamie, do you wanna say hi to him?" I asked, picking up my phone.

She smiled and nodded, "Sure," she said.

I picked my phone back up and lifted it closer to my face, "Jamie, one of my sisters wanted to say hi to you!" I said, nudging Eve's knee with mine.

"HI Jamie! I'm Eve!" she said smiling.

"Hey Eve! It's nice to kinda meet you!" he said with a laugh at the end.

Eve laughed as well and nodded, "Yeah you too! I hope you have a Merry Christmas!"

"Thanks!" he said and I could tell he was smiling, "I hope you have an amazing Christmas this year! I'm jealous that you get to hang out with your sister."

Eve laughed and I saw her visibly relax, "I'm jealous you've been able to hang out with her more than me lately!"

He laughed loudly, "Ehhh, that's true I guess we can share her!"

"Deal!" Eve said with a smile.

"Alright, well, I'll let you guys get back to family time. I'll talk to you soon Josie," he said making me smile.

"I'll text you in a bit, Jamie," I told him.

"Oaky," he said and I knew he had his dopey little grin on his face, "It was nice meeting you Eve!"

"You too! Bye Jamie!" she said.

"Bye guys!" Jamie said before disconnecting.

I locked my phone and placed it on my nightstand, "Is he your boyfriend?" Eve asked me curiously.

I laughed and shook my head looking at her, "No, no. Not right now...I like him...a lot actually. But we've been taking things slow."

"I can tell he likes you," she said matter of fact.

"Really?" I asked with a small laugh, "How can you tell?" I asked her, poking her in the side.

She rolled her eyes but smiled at me, "The way he talks to you and about you! Even in that thirty second convo we just had I could tell! It's adorable! And the fact that he got your earring worth probably a million dollars doesn't hurt either."

I instinctively brought my hand up to my ear and touched my earrings, "They're not that much!" I said.

She laughed and fell back on my bed, "I know, but still!"

I laid next to her, "We'll see how things go with us...but things are good right now," I told her, "So what's up with you?" I asked looking over at her.

She sighed dramatically and threw her arm over her face with a huff, "Boys. Are. So. Dumb."

I laughed loudly, "Tell me everything!"
