Happy Birthday

Chapter One

Clara does her best to be quiet as she maneuvers around in the kitchen, gathering food for her boyfriend’s birthday. She chuckles to herself in disbelief—twenty-nine years old. Her boyfriend is getting old, well not that old. She is only two years younger than him. Clara poured four nearly perfect circles of pancake batter onto the skillet before she placed strips of bacon in the pan. Breakfast in bed was the least she could do for Sidney’s birthday. He’s been such an amazing boyfriend the past three years and they’ve grown so much together—through injuries and fighting to stay together, they finally have made it.

She turns over the pancakes, satisfied with the light brown side. Grabbing her phone, Clara puts on some music while she cooks. Jack Johnson seems fitting for an early morning breakfast. She turns the bacon and then fills the coffee maker with some of that dark roast Starbucks coffee. Luckily, Sid is a heavy sleeper so she may actually be able to make it upstairs with all the food. Clara sways lightly to the breezy music, her old oversized Stanford t-shirt gently moving against her thighs. This is Sid’s favorite shirt on her besides any of his shirts of course.

Clara removes the now cooked pancakes from the skillet and onto a plate before placing four more circles on it. She then turns to the bacon, quickly moving it onto a plate with a napkin to drain the oil. Sid is going to freak about the bacon; though he enjoys bacon, he sticks to a strict diet especially since he’s training for the World Cup of Hockey. Hands wrap around her small waist making her jump and almost drop the spatula.

“Holy crap Sidney!” Clara squeals as Sidney chuckled in her ear. She turns around to face him and is greeted with a lazy smile and bed-head hair. Her favorite thing to look at in the morning. “You scared me and ruined your surprise.”

“I’m sorry baby, I reached over and you weren’t there. And I smelled coffee so I looked for you.” He looks at all the food and back at her with a smile. “Is this all for me?”

“Not all for you silly,” she giggles. “I gotta eat too. Happy birthday, babe,” Sidney grins before he leans in for a kiss—warmth spreads throughout Clara’s body causing her to fall in deeper into the kiss. She wraps her arms around his neck, sighing happily before pulling away.

“Thank you so much,” he says. He looks at her with so much adoration, Clara feels like her heart may explode with love. “Don’t forget the pancakes, love.” Clara totally forgot about those! That’s what happens when your hot boyfriend distracts you with a smoldering kiss. Clara quickly turns over the pancakes; to her surprise, they aren’t burnt.

“Thanks for reminding me. Oh, by the way, I kinda didn’t know what to get you this year since you legitimately have everything so I settled on movie tickets.” Sidney lets out that giggle honk of his, a laugh that Clara has learned to love. He walks to her and kisses her forehead.

“That’s totally okay. I got everything I want, well almost everything.” Clara cocks her head to the side confused. What else could he want? She moved in with him at the beginning of the year and he won the Stanley Cup. She watches him go to some of the cabinets that the two never use and pulls out a small pink box with a white ribbon around it.

“What’s that?” Clara asks skeptically. It’s his birthday, shouldn’t she be giving him gifts? Sid has always been so giving and that is one of the reasons why she loves him so much.

“You gotta open it to find out,” Sid whispers when he hands it to Clara. She takes it in her delicate hands, slowly pulling off the ribbon. Lifting the top, she finds tiffany blue tissue paper covering whatever goodie Sidney is giving her. Suddenly, her blood is racing as she takes out the paper and puts it on the table.

“No way,” she whispers as she pulls out the jewelry box, the color as the tissue paper. Sidney laughs softly.

“Open it, babe,” he nudges. Clara takes a deep breath before opening the box and removing the next little Tiffany box. Inside is a diamond ring—about one carat—set on a platinum band with diamonds all around it.

“Oh my god,” Clara says. She’s speechless and shaking and her mind is racing. Sidney smiles and takes the box out of her hands. Removing the ring from its case, he gets down on one knee in front of her.

“Clara, we’ve been together for so long now—from nearly not being able to stand each other to becoming best friends and now a couple. You’ve made me so incredibly happy especially when I thought I couldn’t be. You showed me that life isn’t only about hockey and that I need to let loose a little.” Clara giggles. She is always telling him to live a little, trying to get him to do fun things and find other hobbies to distract him.

“I want to make more memories with you among other things so,” Sidney takes a breath, his cheeks flush. “Clara Andrea Roberts, will you make me the happiest man by becoming my wife? Will you marry me?” Clara can hardly contain her excitement as she squeals.

“Yes, I will! Yes Sidney, a thousand times yes!” The two laugh as Sidney shakily places the ring on her left ring finger. Clara stares at it in awe before tackling Sidney, pushing him onto the kitchen floor. He grunts at the sudden impact while Clara smothers him with kisses.

“Best birthday ever,” Sid laughs. “Dude you forgot the pancakes!”

“Who cares, I’m gonna marry the love of my life!” Clara exclaims, straddling her soon to be husband. Sidney laughs, pulling her close for another kiss.
