The Roommate

Twenty One

Today is Christmas eve. Bri is supposed to fly home and Sid’s family is supposed to fly in. Except there’s a massive snowstorm throughout the east coast and the Pittsburgh airport is shut down completely. Sid’s seemingly okay with the delay, but Bri on the other hand is a wreck.

She was much looking forward to going home with her family and enjoying a few days with them to celebrate the holidays. She’s spent most of the morning crying in her room with Marty in her arms while Sid listened silently on the other side of the door. He was heartbroken on her behalf. Obviously he couldn’t control the weather but he could at least try and change her mood.
He knocked softly on the door, “Bri, can I come in?”

She sniffled, “Yes.”

He opened the door to see her in sweatpants and in fetal position squishing her dog with tears in her eyes and tissues around the bed. “What are you doing to Marty?” he laughed, moving her legs so he could sit on the foot of the bed.

“If I let him go he’ll eat all the kleenex,” she responded, making Sidney laugh more.

“You doing okay?”

“Yeah, I just really wanted to be home for the holidays, that’s all.”

“I can totally understand that. You’ll see them as quickly as the weather allows it. The roads are nasty out there that’s for sure. I wouldn’t wanna fly in this either.”

“Are you upset about your family not coming?” she asked, sitting up kind of, and cleaning her bed so Marty could roam free.

“I am, but I rather them be safe. It’s happened before but on their end this time. They’ll get hit by this storm in no time. I bet you by the time they wake up tomorrow morning.”

“I could imagine what it’s like back home,” she sighed. “We haven’t had a white Christmas in a while.”

“I thought Toronto got a lot of snow?”

“We usually do, but in January and February more. March is a hit or miss. We’ll get snow in December but it melts right before Christmas. So the opposite of magical to be honest.”

“I’ve never had a non-white Christmas like ever. And it appears my streak won’t be broken this year either,” he said looking out the window. It was getting a lot worse out there, to the point where he’s thankful the town is shut down the next day due to the holiday. “It’s getting nasty out there.”

“I don’t want to do anything outside today, that’s too much,” she sighed, rolling over, her eyes burning from crying.

That’s when Sidney got an idea.

“Do you trust me?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Grab your coat and let’s go.”

“What? Where are we going in weather like this!?” she asked in shock.

“You’ll see,” he smirked walking out of her room.

When she was dressed in her full winter attire she saw him come down in the same, he took a moment to go into the garage and grab a few things. Luckily he had already shovelled so the driveway wasn’t too covered.

“Where are we going?” she asked hesitantly in the doorway of the garage.

“Get in the car, and I’ll tell you when we’re there.”

So she did. And off they drove into the white distance. She could barely tell where they were going since she had never been that way before in this town. The drive was maybe 15 minutes tops, thankfully for her nervous sake. Sid felt confident in his driving ability in these weather conditions, she was just nervous in general about driving.

When they pulled up she noticed they were at a ski lodge. “I don’t have stuff to ski!”

“You don’t need it. We’re going snow tubing,” he laughed.

“So like tobogganing?” she asked with a priceless expression of excitement on her face.

“You bet. Days like these are meant to be outside for! You like the surprise?” he asked.

“I love it!” she squealed, jumping for joy as they walked to the lodge.

They spent a solid 3 hours going up and down the hills, trying different positions on the tubes, holding onto each other, spinning, you name it. It made both of them feel so innocent together and so pure. They were genuinely having fun and forgot who they were. There was no judgment, or fear. It came natural and they enjoyed each other’s company.

After their last ride down the slope they decided to grab a hot chocolate in the lodge and split a cookie. It was very romantic the way they sat by the fire, laughing and reminiscing about their different childhood activities and stories.

After they left the ski resort it was really getting dark fast, so Sidney drove home as quickly as he could despite the horrific snowfall and road conditions. They were both never more relieved to be home as they did when they got home then.
He parked his car in the driveway and told Bri to unlock the door while he shoveled and got his car in the garage with hers. Bri did as he asked and welcomed herself in, being greeted by a happy dog. She scooped him up and let him out in the front yard as Sid shoveled. The poor guy couldn’t stand in the snow being so small so she went out and carried him around until there was a spot he could go. She forgot about this part of winter with animals.

She brought the shivering cold dog inside and dried him off hoping to warm him up quickly. He was shaking like a madman. Bri decided to start dinner without Sid’s consent, knowing he’d insist on him cooking. The way he made her feel today was more than she could imagine so it was the least she could do.

When he came in from the garage he asked, “Bri, what are you doing?”

“Making dinner!” she replied, handling the chicken she had taken out earlier.

“Why would you do that?” he asked coming in, taking his gloves off and putting them on the vent to dry. “Ou chicken. What are you making?”

“Chicken parm,” she laughed, knowing how happy he’d be knowing she breaded it and everything.

“You are amazing!” he cheered, looking through the fridge. “Do you want me to make a salad?”

“We don’t have any lettuce, so unless you want a pasta salad-”

“Yeah we’ll not have a salad tonight I guess,” he said going to the island. “May I offer you a glass of wine at least?”

“Red please.”

He was shocked by her answer, “You sure you want red? You drink white.”

“Yeah, why not? I don’t mind switching it up. Plus I know you like red so why waste two bottles?”

“Alright, stay right there.”

He walked into his office where he kept a mini wine cooler under his desk, mainly because he can’t find a place to keep it anywhere else in his home. Crouching down he found a bottle he would normally never drink, a bottle made by Carey Price and his wife.

He grabbed the bottle and walked back to the kitchen, taking two glasses down and opening the bottle. He poured her a glass and said, “Courtesy of Carey and Angela Price.”

“Ou, a bottle from the enemy?” she joked, accepting her glass and smiling big at him.

“Well you know, got it from them after I helped them at a charity event last year. Believe it or not we’re really good friends outside of work.”

“Well, tell them thank you,” she paused. “To spending Christmas together this year.” She offered her glass for him to toast with.

“To us.”

“And Christmas,” she finished as they lightly tapped glasses while staring into each others eyes and taking a long sip. “You know you have to stare in each others eyes while you cheers or else you’ll have bad sex for 7 years?” she playfully informed as she turned her back to him to pay attention to the pot of boiling pasta behind her.

“Oh really? Did I not look at you long enough?”

“Nope!” she giggled.

“Well I don’t want you having bad sex then. Sex has to be awesome,” he said, handing her her glass again as she turned to him. “To good sex,” he said, offering his glass.

“To good sex,” she snickered back, taking another sip.

“After that stare I know you won’t have bad sex,” he pointed, laughing while he walked out of the room to set the table.

Is that so Mr. Crosby, Bri thought, getting her mind going in a dirty way.
