The Dream

Special Day

I woke up to the smell of fresh cooked bacon and newly brewed coffee, an unusual occurrence in my house considering that my parents have reached that age where they don't even want to cook for the holidays. After stretching out and wiping the sleep out of my eyes, I sit up to greet my old, greying dog at the end of my bed. He is a black lab mix, a mutt, that I have had for thirteen years. We're siblings who grew up together and watching him age so quickly was not easy. I cherish every second I get with him since they are few and far between. College had put some distance between me and the house I grew up in. I knew I didn't want to go to school close to home but I also didn't expect to go 600 miles away. Attending the University of South Carolina had always been my dream and now, exiting my junior year, I wasn't about to throw what I had away for suburban Pennsylvania and my four-legged best friend.
I stand up sluggishly and make my way over to the mirror hanging on the back of my dark wood door. God I was ugly first thing in the morning. My long, thick, light brown hair was not clean nor organized, I could tell it was going to be a bitch to wash today, but I wasn't going to worry about that now. I tie it up in a high, knotted ponytail and call it a finished masterpiece. My eyes are almond shaped and squinty, especially when I smile, but I always considered myself blessed by how dark of a brown they are. I put my thick rimmed, black glasses on my small nose. I considered changing out my nose piercing to something more flashy than the average diamond stud I've had in for months, but that's a lot of effort so I forget the idea quickly. I leave my PJs on but cover up in a fluffy purple robe that is definitely too short for me, but oh well. Being five foot ten was not always fun. Short dresses were long shirts, short shorts were wedgie-city, and most things that should be long enough weren't. But I loved my height most days because it gave me great, long legs. As I accept my lame appearance and go to leave my room, I stop and plant a kiss on Koby's head just to let him know that I won't blame him if he doesn't want to get up and join us in the kitchen.
I walk out and immediately turn to the left, walking through the dining room and into the kitchen. We had a modest sized house, big enough to get the job done but small enough that I never felt lost. My mom stood there scrambling eggs and plating the meal while my dad stood to the side sipping coffee.
"Mae! Good morning!" mom says with a smile
"What's all this?"
"Oh nothing......your dad and I thought you deserved a good breakfast on your special day."
"Special day??? Mom, my birthday isn't for a couple of weeks"
"Not your birthday!!!!!!"
Dad thankfully interjects, "Mae check the home phone voicemail."
As soon as he said that I knew what the celebratory breakfast was for. I had applied for several internships to gain some experience in the medical field this summer and someone must've accepted me.
I play it cool and walk calmly to the answering machine, while on the inside I was screaming with excitement. Was it UPMC chiropractics or allegheny general hospital?! I push the play button and listen intensely.
"Hello Miss Breant! This is Dr. Melissa McLane, assistant team physician for the Pittsburgh Penguins. On behave of the team and faculty I would like to congratulate you on being offered the summer medical internship we house, here, at PPG Paints Arena. Please call me back with your decision as soon as you can so we can begin working with you...that is if you accept it! Have a wonderful day and I look forward to hearing from you!" *beeeeeeeeeep*
I stood there, in the corner of the kitchen, with a wide opened mouth, facing the answering machine. I was unable to speak so my father helped me out, "well...."
I turned around and a huge smile crept across my face.
"Well what?!!!! I'm going to work for the Pittsburgh Penguins!!!!!"
They both embraced me into the tightest and most emotional hug I've ever had.
This was it. This was the start of my career, the start of the rest of my life.

Notes

So I'm new to writing fanfiction and I know from college papers that I can be too wordy tbh but bare with me through the first couple chapters and I promise it'll get more interesting/well written. Also don't be afraid to let me know what you think! I take constructive criticism very well.

I'm sorry if my comment came off as being rude. That was not my intention. I tried to use an emoji but I guess you can't do that on here? I can't wait to read the new update!

Hello! Firstly, thank you for reading! Secondly, I apologize it takes me longer than most authors to post. Especially now that the plot is more detailed, I spend a lot more time rewriting and editing. I do intend on getting quicker though. Thanks again for the support! Keep your eye out for a new chapter tonight! :)
