The Intern

The First Interview

“Can you interview number 27 for me? I have the questions written down, you just have to write what he says down.” My boss, Peter tells me as I am folding towels that are going to be given out tomorrow. My name is Lauryn Walsh and I am interning with the Ottawa Senators organization. I am going to Carleton University and am studying journalism. For being at the top of my class in first year I and three others got internships, I chose the Senators as my internship because I would like to go into sports journalism and write about hockey. For the most part of the internship I make coffee and food runs and organize what special items are going to be handed out at home games but today I actually get to interview someone today, which I have been waiting to do since I started here two months ago after my rugby season was over.

I play rugby for the Carleton Ravens and this is now my second year, the coach had told me at the end of last years season that if I played like I had last season I would be a starter. That really boosted my confidence and the following summer I played for the rep team and was able to play on team ontario where we won nationals and I was scouted by Team Canada, it was so exciting as I got to go to a u20 camp where I met unbelievable players and got to play with them. That was an experience of a lifetime and made me very excited and ready for the next season at Carleton. I came into training camp and was told after day 1 that I would play flanker for the team this year as my favourite position was given to our captain, Sadie who is in her final year. I had dreamed about being a starter on my university team since I started playing rugby at the age of 12.

I started here in October coming three days a week, all weekend and once during the week. I have classes the rest of the week so it has been quite difficult juggling classes with the internship and also workouts with my rugby team and by myself. I do enjoy the internship and I can see being able to have a journalism career within the NHL. I would prefer rugby but Rugby Canada is based in British Columbia so that wasn’t possible. I know most of the players and they know of me as “the intern.” I don’t mind though, as I am the intern.

I smooth back my fly aways from my ponytail braid before getting my note pad and pen ready with the list of questions that are needed and head on down to the locker room. Peter said number 27 who I think is Curtis Lazar, he is in his second year with the sens and he is well known around the fan base and organization. He doesn’t talk a lot to me that much, on the team I’m close with Mike Hoffman, Cody Ceci and newbie Shane Prince. Curtis is quieter around me but when I see him at practices and with the rest of the team is he smiling and talking away. I try to build friendships with everybody on the team as I am working with most of team during my time here.

A bunch of reporters are already in the locker room interviewing players after morning skate before their game against Tampa tomorrow. I walk in to see Curtis finishing up taking his equipment off and I slowly walk over to him.

Curtis looks up at me and gives me a small smile, I have yet to see his famous smile being directed at me. “Hey intern.” Curtis says.

“Is this a bad time?” I ask quietly. “Peter has asked me to ask you some questions.”

“I’m free, we can go into the lunch room right now to talk in a more private spot or here. Where ever you are comfortable.”

“The lunch room sounds good, I can make us a sandwich and you can meet me in there when you done.” I smile at him and start to walk away.

“Hey intern.” Curtis calls to me and I turn around to face him. “Give me five minutes.” I nod and walk out of the locker room.

“The World Juniors are coming up, do you have any advice for this year’s team and from a former captain to this years captain.” I have gotten through about half of my questions now as Curtis and I have finished our turkey sandwiches with gatorade.

“I have been in two World Juniors, one which was successful and one not so much. I think if you can just remember how much of an honour it is to wear the maple leaf that you should use that as motivation to work hard and try to win that gold medal. As being a captain I think they need to make sure everyone has a good outlook on the tournament and if the team is winning to not let others get caught up in that a player isn’t preforming as well or putting up the numbers. The team winning is what matters and everyone is apart of a team, not a one man show.” Curtis explains all his answers into detail so after the first question I realized that I should record and make notes.

“Any predictions on who will win?” I ask knowing that the question isn’t on my sheet.

Curtis smirks. “Canada obviously, I think every time Canada is at a major hockey tournament the expectation is gold and I think the team will be able to achieve that.”

“They do have big shoes to fill.” I comment before looking on my sheet for the next question.

“What makes you think that?” Curtis looks at me amused.

“Ohhh, uhh I just mean that last years team was so dominant, they never even trailed or we never tied other than at 0-0. People say its one of the best teams ever, how would you even follow that?” I say to him. “But anyways-”

“How do you remember all that? Are you into sports journalism?” Curtis asks astonished.

“I really enjoy sports, especially hockey. I don’t know I just remember weird stuff like that.” I tell him.

“How did you get this internship?” He asks me his eyes boring into mine.

“I was one of the top students in my class, I basically got to choose where I could intern. I knew I wanted hockey so here I am.”

“You are a lot different than what I thought you were like.” He tells me.

“And what would that be?” I ask nervous about his answer.

“I thought you were a rich, stuck up dumbo who knew nothing about hockey and her dad or something got you this gig.” He tells me brutally honest.

“OH.” I say looking down. “Thats not me.”

“I can tell and I am sorry for making those kind of judgements about yourself.” Curtis says as I avoid eye contact.

“Anyways, next question.” I go through the rest of the questions until I see the last question. “Uhm, are you single?” I try to ask nicely and not be blunt.

“Yes, why do you ask?” Curtis says.

“Peter wrote this down, I’m so sorry.” I shake my head, the conversation had been quite awkward since he told me of his prior thoughts about me.

“Are you sure you just wanted to know that I was single so you could flirt with me?” Curtis asks.

“I wouldn’t do that, I value this internship and people too much to do that.” I tell him looking him straight in the eye.

“God, you’re hot when you are serious with me.” Curtis mumbles and I blush and look away.

“I didn’t mean to come off that way.” I apologize.

“Intern, I’m really attracted to you right now.” Curtis leans across the little table where we are sitting and turns off the recording on my phone. “Lets go off the record.”

Oh lord, this is nerve racking. I gulp and look up at his eyes which are filled with lust now.

“Do you think I’m attractive, intern?” Curtis asks me.

I hum in response, nodding my head.

“Say it.” He demands, Curtis seems to be controlling which is making him more attractive as I would never imagine he is like this.

“You’re attractive, Curtis.” I squeak out.

“Good girl, now here is my number. When you get off work tonight text me and we can finish my part of interviewing you.” Curtis gets up and whispers this into my ear, his hot breath making my hair stand on end. “Text me intern.” He mutters while exiting the lunch room, leaving me speechless and ruined panties.

“Holy shit.” I mutter and pull up my email to tell Peter that I have finished the interview and wonder where he is. He replies almost instantly asking if I could write up the answers and email them to him and then says after that I will be done for the day. I smirk knowing that I can finish my work before leaving to finish some other business with Curtis Lazar.

I quickly finish listening to the recording and working with my notes on my mac to get this task done well but also as fast as possible so I can get on with my day. I email Peter my work and head back to my office as I finished the work in the lunch room to grab my coat and purse. I look at the folded paper that was in the pocket of my senators coat and add that into my phone.

My fingers type furiously as excitement builds in me. I text Curtis ‘No. 27 still up for that interview? -intern’

“OH- heading out?” Andrew Hammond, better known as the hamburglar asks me as he stands in the doorway to my office. I almost jump out of my skin as he has startled me from being excited about Curtis.

“Yeah, I got all my jobs done for the day.” I smile and try to recover from being scared.

“You back here tomorrow?” He asks.

I shake my head. “I have class, might come to the game depends on my homework, but I doubt it.”

“Darn, I was hoping to have someone to sit with in the box.” Andrew mutters.

“What are you still doing here?” I ask him.

“Was working with the goalie coach and going through physio. It’s only 3, you know.” He smiles at me.

“Right its just usually most guys have gone home by now.” I tell him as I put my coat on. “You heading out now too?” He already has his coat on and his bag slung over his back.

“Yep, wanna walk together?” He asks which I nod and grab my purse before closing and locking the door to my office.

“How’s physio going?” I ask Andrew.

“Good, progress is good. I want to be able to practice again within the next week. Doctors say that could be possible.” He tells me.

“That’s good, I’m glad.” I smile.

“Were you a sens fan before coming here?” Andrew asks.

“Jets or Pens fan. But Jets are my favourite team.” I look down a little embarrassed.

“Two teams eh? I was a Canucks fan.”

“Well my dad was drafted by the Penguins, and my cousin is drafted to the Jets, Nic Petan?” I tell him. My mom is a sister to Nic’s dad.

“I think I have heard of him. Played for last year’s world junior team right?” He asks.

“Yep.” As we get out into the quite mild December air for being in Ottawa. “Well goodbye, Andrew.”

“Goodbye Intern.” He smiles and walks to his car as I split for my car. I feel my phone vibrate and look down to see three texts from Curtis.

‘Intern, i knew i would hear from u.’
‘here’s my address _________________, come over’
‘what is taking u so long?’

He is very impatient, holy. I quickly reply ‘omw dont get ur panties in a twist’ I plug Curtis’ address into my gps on my phone and head out of the players and staff parking area. I smile intrigued by the mystery of what could happen tonight.
