Playing Rough

A Little Party Never Killed Nobody

Ten minutes later the cab pulls up at North Memorial Hospital. Charley's eyes widen and she dashes out of the car. The glass doors slide open and she feels the rush of cold air as she enters. She hurries along the crowded hallways, Noah on her heels, to the ER.

"Jonathan did something. He was so sad." Charley thinks to herself. She turns the corner into the ER and sees Jonathan leaning against the wall. She rushes over to him and pulls him into her arms.

"Oh my gosh Jonathan. I thought you did something to yourself. You were so sad." Charley says, bringing him closer and inhaling his musky scent.

"You thought it was me?" Charley nods. Then she comes to a realization, if it wasn't Jon, who was it? Again realization clouds her mind and her eyes well up with tears.

"Jake?" she croaks out. Jonathan nods slowly. Charley bursts into tears and Jon hold her tightly knowing he is the only thing that is keeping her standing. Noah comes up behind her and puts a hand on her shoulder. Out of the corner of her eye she sees Kyle and Coach M.

"Is he okay? C-c-can I see him?" she stutters out. Noah and Jonathan exchange knowing looks. Charley looks between them and panic fills her stomach.

"He's is okay, isn't he?" Charley asks in a worried tone.

"Well, not exactly." Noah whispers.

"He, he died, Charley. He was crossing the street and got hit by a car. He just ran into the middle of the road like he was in a terrible rush. The car didn't even see him until it was too late. He died on impact. What could he been out rushing around to get so suddenly?" Jonathan explains causing Charley to begin another round of tears.

"It's all my fault." she cries.

"Hey, sh, no it's not. You had no control over that." Jonathan soothes her.

"But it is. He went out to get something for me."

"What was he getting?" Noah asks with interest.

"Condoms." Charley chokes out at barely a whisper. From the look in Noah's eye she can tell he's angry and she begins to sob once more.

"You were going to have sex with him?" Noah hisses, clenching his teeth.

"Noah," Jonathan warns. "Not now." Jonathan takes a seat on one of the chairs in the waiting room and pulls Charley down with him. She curls up in his lap like a little kid and buries her face in his chest.

"Since when did you two get so close?" Noah mumbles, sitting down next to Jonathan on the blue plastic chairs.

"Guess there's a lot you don't know." Jon mutters. Noah casts him a cold glare but Jon brushes it off.

"I'm going to go get coffee, I'll bring you two back one." Noah pushes up off the chair and heads out the doorway in search of coffee. Silence falls over Jon and Charley before she speaks.

"I can't believe he's dead." she whispers.

"I know, I can't either."

"It hurts so bad." she sobs. "Jake was my best friend, and my boyfriend. I loved him so much."

"I know, I know. But a good friend once told me that it will get easier with time." Charley smiles and throws her arms around Jon.

"Thanks Jon, for everything."

As much as the talk with Jonathan had helped Charley, the next day at practice, she still couldn't seem to think straight and focus. She began to get frustrated and finally skated over to the bench and threw herself down on the seat, grabbing a bottle of water and taking a swig. Jonathan skated up to her.

"How are you holding up?" he asks.

"I feel like shit. I hardly got any sleep last night and I just can't seem to focus. My shots go wide, I can't seem to pass to who I'm trying to pass to and my checks just land me on the ice, flat on my face." Charley pulls her hands from her gloves and removes her helmet and slowly massages her temple.

"Charley, we have a game in two days."

"Don't remind me Jon." she snaps.

"Charley, it's all going to be okay, it will-."

"Just stop Jon, seriously. Just leave me alone. You were so much bearable when you were a dick. Just go cry about your grandpa or something." Jonathan sucks in a shaky breath at Charley's words and she instantly regrets them.

"Jon, I'm sorry, I-."

"No, you know what Charley, save it. Honestly." he turns around and skates off but suddenly stops and turns around. "This is why I don't show people that side of me. I trusted you to see that side of me and you just used it against me. Look who's the dick now." Charley can feels tears begin to slip down her cheeks. She buries her face in her hands.

Practice ends ten minutes later and Charley's the first one off the ice. She quickly changes and heads out of the arena. As she walks out the door she bumps into another girl around her age. She's petit with dark brown hair and a kind face.

"Oh, I'm sorry." she smiles, bending down to grab Charley's hockey bag and hand it to her.

"Thanks." Charley says, forcing a smile.

"I don't mean to pry, but are you alright, you look a little, what's the word? Off. Sad. You fill in the blank."

"It's been a rough week." Charley shrugs.

"Well I'm a good listener."

"You don't want to hear my sob story." Charley lets out a bitter laugh.

"Well, here's the story, a couple of my friends and I are going out for a night on the town, why don't you join us. Get over whatever's getting you down."

"Thanks, but I think I'm going to need more than a couple random hook-ups to get over what I've been through." Charley scoffs.

"Suit yourself." the girl shrugs and turns to open the door.

"Wait, I'll-I'll come." Charley swallows. The girl smiles and they exchange numbers.

"I'm Abby by the way." the girl says sticking her hand out.

"Charley." Charley replies, shaking it. They say goodbye just as Noah exits the building. She follows him to the car and a few seconds later Kyle joins them. It's a silent ride back to the hotel. On the way home she gets a text from Abby to be ready in the lobby at nine.

Seven rolls around and she does her basic pre-night-out routine of a shower. Her nails were still done the other day so she just slips on a tight and short black dress that drew attention to all the right places, added some gold jewelry and a pair of red pumps, curled her hair and she was ready to go.

Nine o'clock a black audi pulls up and Abby gets out and waves to Charley. Abby was wearing a short silver dress and a pair of black heels and her hair was pulled up into a messy ponytail. There was another girl, Lucy, who was sitting in the passenger seat who was a red head with bright green eyes and was wearing a pink dress with a lace cut out back.

Abby pulls the car up to a nightclub in the middle of town. She gives the keys to the valet and they strut to the front of the line like they own the place. Confidence is oozing from them and the boys whistle. For just tonight, Charley can push the thought of Jake and Jon out of her head and relax a little. Guilt flashes through her but she pushes it away.

Surprisingly, even though its an over-21 club, Abby gets them in. They weave their way through the crowd of sweating bodies to the bar. The music is blaring and Charley can feel her heart pounding. Abby orders them a round of shots. When the small glass of clear liquid is set in front of Charley, she looks at it skeptically. The other girls have already finished the vodka and are looking at her expectantly.

"Never done shots before?" Abby asks, cocking her head slightly.

"Never had a drink before." Charley replies. She downs the liquor and cringes at it burns her throat. Abby lets out a giggle.

"So what's your story? Now that I have a little alcohol in you and all." Abby asks.

"I'm here playing in a hockey tournament, my boyfriend was killed in a car accident yesterday getting us condoms so we could have sex and to make matters worse I was a complete and utter ass to my friend when he was only trying to comfort me." Charley spills. Abby arches an eyebrow.

"Sorry about the boyfriend."

"I don't want to think about it now."

"I didn't know there was a girls hockey tournament going on in town. I know there's a guys because my cousin Sean is on the team." Abby changes the subject.

"I play on the boys team. Got kicked off the girls for playing to rough."

"A girl who likes to play rough. Boys love that." Abby winks and pushes off the bar, grabbing her and Lucy's hand and pulls them to the dance floor. After ten minutes of dancing, Abby orders two more rounds of shots and Charley is buzzing. Never have had a drink before, she wasn't real good at holding her drinks. They return to the dance floor and minutes later, a guy has his crotch pressed firmly against Charley's backside.

She grinds hard on him. Again the feeling of guilt returns but she tells herself she needs this, she needs to relax and unwind a little.

"Want to come back to my place sexy?" the voice asks. Wait, that voice. She knows that voice.

"Jon?" she exclaims, whipping around and comes standing face to face with Jonathan Toews. Jon's eyes widen and then immediately narrow at her. She breaks from his grip and storms towards anywhere other than where Jon is but he follows her.

"What the hell are you doing here? You're underage." Jon grabs her wrist but she snatches it away.

"Why should you care?"

"You're right." Jonathan lets out a bitter and sarcastic laugh. "Why should I care. I guess maybe I should go cry about my grandpa some more, shouldn't I? Took the comeback right out of your mouth didn't I?"

"Jon," Charley says softly, letting his name linger on her tongue. "I'm so sorry, I never should of said that. You're absolutely right when you said I took advantage of your trust and I'm so sorry."

"That still doesn't answer my original question."

"I came here with a girl I met earlier today." she points Abby out in the crowd. She's busy grinding against Patrick Kane. Jonathan laughs.

"That's Pat's kinda sorta girlfriend/fuck buddy. It's complicated. Now will you please let me take you home?" Charley scowls.

"Not in that way." Jon laughs, pulling Charley out the door and hailing a cab. They ride back to the hotel in silence and make their way to Charley's room. As soon as she gets in the door she breaks down in a fit of tears.

"What did I do? Why did I go there?" she moans, tears cascading down her cheeks. Jonathan carefully pulls off her dress and helps her get into a pair of shorts and a baggy t-shirt. He tucks her into bed and gives her a kiss on the forehead.

"Goodnight Charley, get some sleep, you'll feel better in the morning."

"Jon, stay, please." she looks up at him with pleading eyes. He finally obliges. He strips down to his boxers and climbs into bed next to her. She snuggles in next to him as he turns out the lights.

"I can't believe I was grinding on you. I'm such an idiot." she says. He laughs and she hits her head against his chest in embarrassment and she's thankful it's dark so he can't see her flushed cheeks. He's happy it's dark so she can't see the massive boner he has from thinking about it.
