Hockey Short Stories/ One Shots

Daddy

I had 1 year left on her commerce degree when I found out I was pregnant. Pregnant with one of the NHL’s biggest stars, Auston Matthews. Auston and I had been dating for just over a year when we found out that we were going to have a baby. Back then that terrified myself beyond belief, I thought Auston wouldn’t want the baby and ask me to get rid of it or just plainly leave me. However Auston surprised me when he promised me that he would commit to our relationship and our family. At first Auston was very, very nervous for the baby to come. He had some practice with Tyler Bozak’s kid Kanon but still he felt really underprepared and that rubbed off on me. However Molly, Bozak’s wife and the others Lady Leafs helped us out so much in throwing a baby shower for the two and gave so much advice to Auston and I for their first child. This calmed us down a lot and was one of the biggest reasons why the transition to having a child went super smoothly.

So on July 23, 2018 Kaelen Matthews was born into this world and the NHL baby lifestyle real quick. He was the light of Auston and Mia’s life and soon it was all about Kaelen. Not that the two minded.

So almost two years later after a third round elimination for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kaelen and I head down to wait for Auston to come out of the locker room. I expected to wait awhile because Auston would be upset and he would have to talk to many reporters, being the captain after all.

But I was surprised when Mitch and his best friend came out together with others still in the locker room. Auston was freshly showered and had a leafs ball cap on backwards. Kaelen spots his daddy and wiggles to get out of my hands. “DADDYYYY,” he squeals running towards his dad.

Auston drops his hockey bag and kneels down to let his son run into him giving his dad the signature post game hug. Kaelen doesn’t understand the stakes of the game that Auston had lost tonight so he just always shows his dad the love he has. “Hi Kay,” Auston tells him picking him up and kissing his cheek.

“Play good!!” Kaelen calls to his dad snuggling into his neck again.

“Thanks buddy,” Auston smiles and makes his way to me waiting in the corner. “Hi love,” Auston leans past Kaelen to give me a kiss.

“Good season babe,” I comment, running my hand down his back.

Auston sighs, “Thanks. Ready to go home?” Auston asks Kaelen.

“HOMEEEE,” the 2 year old squeals. Auston hands over Kaelen back to me and retrieves his hockey bag slinging it over his shoulder. I rest Kaelen on my hip and have the bag filled of Kaelen’s things on my shoulder and lean into Auston on our way to our car.

“You got out early,” I comment to Auston.

He hums, “Yeah, we clean out our lockers tomorrow so they can talk to me then.”

“I would have waited. Kay would have probably just fell asleep,” I tell him.

“I wanted to be with my family,” Auston smiles.

“You’re smiling after a lost.”

“I’m just lucky to have a wonderful girlfriend and the best baby boy in the world. Hockey isn’t everything,” he tells me as we reach the car. I let go of Auston as he puts his hockey bag in the trunk of his jeep and I get a sleepy, now grumpy Kaelen into his car seat. “Is Kay being a grumpy goober?” Auston asks with his baby voice from the trunk. Auston can see that Kaelen is being fussy about me putting his seat belts for his car seat.

“NO,” Kaelen calls loudly in my ear as he talks to his dad. I grimace and back away from the cranky boy.

“Are you sleepy baby? Is it past someone’s bedtime?” I ask Kaelen in my light mom voice.

“I think so,” his dad comments getting into the front seat to drive home.

“No!” Kaelen pouts from the back seat.

“Thats enough Kaelen!” Auston uses his big, bad daddy voice as I close the door and get into the passenger seat. “Be nice,” Auston scolds his son.

I pat Auston’s hand that is resting on the gear shift. Auston sighs loudly and put the car into drive grabbing my hand and holding it between the two of us.

“Sorrrrrry daddy,” Kaelen says softly from the back seat. I can tell he is soon going to be asleep.

“I know buddy. I’m sorry too,” Auston replies.

“Love you,” Kaelen tells him.

“I love you Kay baby, you and mom. So much.”

“Love you momma,”

“I love you too baby,” I tell him looking behind me to see my 2 year old, a spitting image of Auston but with my blue eyes smiling sleepily at me. His customized Daddy number 34 jersey and his maple leaf pajama pants. He wanted to wear all maple leafs stuff for his dad’s game tonight. “Go to sleep Kay, we will be home soon.”

10 minutes later, Auston turns into our condos’ parking lot and I quickly get out. Kaelen is sleeping softly and I slowly pick him up along with my bag before following Auston inside. We head up to our floor and Auston goes to put away his hockey bag and air it out in the laundry room while I put Kaelen in his room. I quickly pull his jersey off and blue and white nikes and place him into his bed and pull the covers over top of his bare stomach. My baby is almost 2 years old and he grows and grows so much everyday. I lean down to place a kiss on his forehead before turning on the maple leaf night light and closing the door slightly enough so if Kaelen were to wake up crying or something, Auston and I could hear.

Next I head to Auston and I’s master bedroom to change into something comfier. I take off my Matthews Fan Club t shirt and my black skinny jeans and put on one of Auston’s shirts and a pair of athletic shorts before heading to find Auston. He was just finished unpacking his bag and was stripping out of his suit and putting that in the laundry room. I whistle from the door admiring my boyfriend in his boxers and an undershirt.

“I think you are wearing something of mine,” he comments walking towards me.

“Me? Nope I don’t think so,” I tell him back innocently.

“Oh really?” Auston raises his eyebrows. “Then whats this?” He points to his large shirt that hangs over my body as he scurries closer to me.

“My shirt,” I shrug. “What do you think of it?” I twist in my spot.

“I think it would look better,” he pauses, his hands on my waist, breathe on my neck. “on the floor.” Auston leans down and attaches his lips to mine and we find our regular pattern. I pull away probably too quick for Auston’s liking as he groans and buries his head in my neck.

“Are you hungry babe?” I ask him pulling away and pulling him into our kitchen.

“I can just make a shake Mia,” he tells me.

“I’ll make you food,” I offer. Auston leans on the counter looking over at me. His bare, muscular chest moves with his actions. Auston sighs and holds his head in his hands. “What?” I ask walking over to rub his back.

“The season is over,” he comments.

“I wondered when this conversation was coming, are you okay? I know how much you wanted to win,” I try to comfort Auston leaning my chin on his shoulder.

“Yeah, I’m okay, I think,” Auston pauses. “But you said after this season we would talk about a wedding.”

“I feel like we’re already married, technically we are already partners in a common law marriage.” I tell him as Auston pulls me into him and rests his hands on the counter with me in between.

“Lets make it official, we already have a kid together. I love you, what else do you want?” Auston pleads.

“I don’t want a big thing. I would be happy with going to city hall to get married babe,” I look into his large, brown eyes and melt like I always do.

“I know but wouldn’t it be fun to have a celebration with our families and maybe some of the guys from the team? It won’t have to be big, just the people we are close with,” Auston suggests. “Kay can be up on the alter with me and we can get married as a family. You get to become Mia Matthews, its cute,” Auston smiles.

“Is this your way of asking me Aus?” I smirk.

“Nope, but I’m gonna Mia. Soon,” Auston promises and leans down to kiss my lips lightly.

“I’ll hold you to it, Matthews.”
