All You Had to do Was Stay

Chapter 1

"Don't forget about us here in little Cole Harbour." Jolene grinned confidently to Sidney, leaning against the hood of her Cavalier, it was something she always said to him when he was gearing up to go back to Pittsburgh.

"I won't, you know I won't." Sid gave her a crooked smile. "You've got big things coming up for you too."

"When? You got out. I'm trying too. I'm stuck going to St. FX in the mean time." Jo rolled her eyes.

"You got out of Cole Harbour. Just keep submitting your videos out to Red Bull or those other sponsors. Your a great snowboarder Jo." Sid sighed as he walked over from Trina's shiny new Ford Escape to lean on the hood next to Jo.

"I feel like I need to get to the bigger hills to get noticed. Sometimes I feel I should just pack the Black Mamba up and drive out to Banff, Kelowna or Whistler."

"If you want to get noticed I can help you, you know that."

"I know. I just want to do it on my own." She sighed.

"Hey, why don't we go to this end of summer party everyone's been talking about, cheer you up."

"With what booze Sid? I'm not 19 till January." She blinked at him.

The 20 year old next to her gave her a sheepish grin, "I may already have a 2-4 of Keith's in the back along with a 26er of Jack."

"Your a bad influence." She laughed.

"You would have gotten it from someone either way." He gave her a nudge, "why don't I follow you to your parents house, park your car and we'll take the campin stuff out."

"That sounds like a good plan to me." She jumped up.

Getting into her car she put it in gear as she headed back to her parents house. Jo was not looking forward to starting Nursing school. It was also looking more like her fall back occupation of being a Dermatologist was looking more realistic then becoming a pro-snowboarder.

Something felt different with Sid this summer. Almost like a physical attraction to each other. Nothing had ever happened, but when Sid came home and found out she had a boyfriend, he did not take it very well. And did everything he could to make Jason uncomfortable, eventually ending up making Jason jealous of her friendship with Sid and ending the relationship.
Jo and Sid had known other since she was born, her parents being close friends with his growing up.

Finding herself with their friends and a few other NHLers and junior players from the area on the beach enjoying a bon fire she found herself getting a nice little buzz as well as enjoying a few joints she rolled prior to going. It was a nice way to end the summer, they had rented almost the entire camp ground, so they could really do whatever they wanted. There were people skinny-dipping in the ocean, there was a designated stoner tent.

"Have you already got everything moved into res?" Her friend Kris asked her.

"Yeah, I did... two days ago now. I don't know how long I'm going to commit to school though." Jo shrugged.

"Why's that?"

"I just don't think it's for me. You know me Kris. I'm all about the snowboarding. That's what I wait to do all summer for December, January and February. Did you know in Alberta and BC some hills are open from October right through May." Jo looked up at the sky, day dreaming about the big mountains.

"Why don't you go?"

"Trust me, I'm thinking about it. But I also think I'm to young to go that far away right now."

"Her parents would kill her." Sid chimed in.

"Says the kid who moved away at 15." Jo huffed. "Moving into student res is just a little taste of freedom. I'm only 2 hours from home."

"I'm going to be glad when I don't have to listen to you two bicker in a couple of days. You two just need to get it over with and fuck each other." Colton rolled his eyes at them.

Jo glanced at Sid, watching him go very red in the face, she probably was blushing too, but it was always funny to see him get embarrassed. The world knew Sidney Crosby, hockey phenom, reserved, boring, savior of the Pittsburgh Penguins. All their friends knew Sid, kind of nerdy, funny, kind of awkward, liked his Alexander Keith's, proud Nova Scotian kid who could mimic Bubbles if you asked him too.

"She's to stubborn for me." He stated.

"I like football players." Jo laughed.

The further and further the night wore on though, it was like Colton put a little magnet in their heads, they found themselves getting closer and closer. They were sharing a tent, but they always did when the crew went camping.

Everyone was long off in their tents while her and Sid watch the fire go out. She was incredibly stoned and he was very drunk. Feeling a shiver come over her he sensed it and put an arm over her. He was warm.

"You know, this summer was different." He said quietly, giving her a slight kiss on the forehead.

"Yeah? How so?"

"Well your legal for one." This earned him a swift punch in the rib from Jo, "I think when I found out you had a boyfriend it gave me a little kick in the ass. That's why I was so weird with you this summer. I just didn't know how to convey my feelings."

She sat up and looked at him. His hazel eyes being lit up by the dying fire.

"What did you just say?" She furrowed her brow.

He didn't say anything, he just kissed her. She didn't pull away, she kissed him back. Maybe it was the drugs and alcohol, she wanted him, she wanted to be underneath him. His alcohol intake had given him the balls to do what he had been wanting to do all summer. The next thing she knew they were stumbling into their tent, falling onto their sleeping bags and air mattress. There was no second thought as they started to get naked that they could be ruining their friendship, Sid was her best friend, her rock and confidant who knew her deepest darkest secrets. They were so young, and would probably regret it in the morning but neither seemed to care. No protection at all, she was on the pill but never took it on time. Jo let herself be completely submissive to Sid as he went down on her, he was skilled, despite always saying he was inexperienced which was a lie, she knew what he was like in junior, and with all the NHL bunnies in all the cities he travelled too. She was too intoxicated to care if their friends heard them, he made her feel good. He made her cum so fast, before it was her turn to return the favour, taking his cock into her mouth. She heard him moan, which she took as a good sign.

"Do you wanna fuck?" He grunted.

"Yeah." She smiled.

He pulled her up and pinned her underneath him, spreading her legs apart and lining himself up with her centre. Jo cried out in pleasure as Sid filled her, his strong hips made him an excellent lover.

"Jo." He moaned, she could feel his hot breath on her neck, "I'm not going to last very long."

"You feel so good." She whined.

He didn't last very long, it was probably the alcohol. He pulled out and came on her stomach, finding one of their beach towels to whip it up. Deciding to make their individual sleeping bags one big one, he positioned them into the spooning position.

And that's when Jo woke up. That was almost three years ago. When her and Sid had gotten too intoxicated and did something stupid. She had completed the school year and transferred to University Of British Columbia: Okanagan. That winter spent in Nova Scotia she had entered contests down at Sugarloaf, Stowe, Lake Placid, Bretton Woods and Smugglers Notch and shredded every moment she could, and finally got noticed. Once Jo hit Kelowna she was at either Big White, Silver Star, Sun Peaks or Mount Revelstoke, with the occasional trip to Lake Louise, Sunshine Village and Whistler. She made a vow to herself to at least finish nursing school, but snowboarding took first priority, and just making qualifiers and securing her way to Vancouver 2010 by the seat of her pants partaking in Snow Cross and Half Pipe.

She has completely cut off communication with Sid after that night. She didn't know what to do or how to act. She had gotten up early and a ride with a friend back to her house. Jo would have loved to have been there when he won the cup. It could have been so easy to be a hockey girlfriend, but it wasn't the life for her.

When ever she had that dream and it played back it was still so vibrant. But she felt like she had thrown 19 years of friendship out the window when that happened. She knew she was going to have to be in the same Olympic Housing with him. She would make the short drive to Vancouver two days prior to get settled in Olympic Village, providing the Coquihalla Highway or Crowsnest Highways weren't closed.

"Oi mate! When do you leave for Van?" Her roommate Lara asked her in her thick Australian accent.

"On Friday. Do you wanna help me with sticker placements on my board?" She hollered back.
She had just gotten her Olympic gear in from her sponsors over at Red Bull, CAPiTA, Under Armour, Smith and Vans. It looked sick, she was so ready to ride in it.

"Do you think your going to see him?" Lara asked Jo, with a little glint of cheekiness in her eyes.

"I have no idea. We'll be living in the same housing so it's inevitable. Knowing me I'll just get super awkward and kind of run in the opposite direction." Jo rolled her eyes and blushed, "he'll be the same."

"Just get a medal and rub it in his face." Lara winked.

"Sid has a much higher chance of winning a medal. He's just come off of a Stanley Cup. I just want to go and send it, even if I don't win a medal. I want the experience and I'll feel more comfortable for 2014 and hopefully they'll have slope style."

"That's a good way to look at it. Man I wish I could have qualified, that would be so dope, you and I going to the Olympics together. We could après in the arvo after our wins."

"I'll see if I can swing tickets to some of the events. It would be nice to après in the arvo with my best friend after we won gold and silver. Canada and Australia. 2014 we'll be going together."

"Après in the arvo is our favourite thing." Lara laughed.

"Always. I can't wait for festivals this summer. I should probably go home thought. It's been a couple of years." Jo sighed.

"You can't run from him for forever either."

"I haven't spoken to Sid since that night to Lar. He will text me every couple of months still. But I think when it comes down to it he'll be so pissed at me."

"Well he pretty much confessed his love to you, and you fuck and chucked him." Lara rolled her eyes, "has anyone from home mentioned it?"

"When Kris was out here last year she brought it up. Said that Sid still talks about it. I can't live that life though. I need big mountains. I need to be where a hill is open 9 months out of the year. I love Biggie. He's so preppy and proper and I'm like hippy and wash my hair once a week, maybe twice a week. I wear vans and he wears running shoes."

"But you have such thick hair you can do it. And you have to wear Vans your paid to do so."

"I knowwww. I'm like getting anxious at the possibility of seeing him. Like I don't know if he's going to be there for opening ceremonies or not. Like I could ask Mom and she could ask Trina but ughhhh." Jo collapsed onto their living room floor.

"Oh Jolene. You are forever in a crisis."

"I really ammm. I'm just lucky he doesn't have social media."

Several days later she found herself moving into Canada House, rooming with one of the members of the Women's Ice Hockey Team, Rebecca Johnston. They got along quite well, they were the same age, and just starting to get their feet wet in their professional careers.

She was gearing up to do a few practice runs at Cypress Mountain, getting her stuff loaded and hauled down the hall when she heard someone yell "JOLENE MACDONALD I HAVE NOT SEEN YOU IN THREE YEARS!" It was the infamous Trina Crosby. Shit, she got busted. She turned around, boards and all, and gave her a big smile. A genuine smile, she missed Trina, she was like her second mom.

Finding herself wrapped up in one of her famous hugs, frantically looking to see if Sid was around.

"Sidney had mentioned you qualified. We are so proud of you. How have you been? It's been so long." Trina asked in one rapid breath.

Sid had been keeping tabs on her career. Kind of creepy, but kind of sweet.

"I've been great. I'm almost a pro now, schools definitely taken the back seat to the hill. Big White just outside of Kelowna is my home base. I love BC, I work in a winery in the summer."

"Is that why you haven't come home? Because of work?"

"I love my job, it has great perks. Both of them. Like two weeks ago I was at the X Games in Aspen."

"Look at you. You deserve it. Sidney's around here somewhere."

"I really have to get to practice. I haven't even taken my new boards out for a test run yet."

"Oh it will take two seconds. Sidney! Sid, look who I found." She looked into what was most likely Sid's dorm.

Sid came out, hiding his emotions well. There was a hint of something in his eye, and he looked so good with his short hair. His arms had gotten bigger. He looked much more mature.

"Hi Jo." He smiled.
