Hair, Nails & Hockey

Chapter One

“Sarah!” I heard and turned around to see my boss quickly walking over towards me, trying not to make much noise as her heels clomp against the wooden floors, “I need you!”

“What’s wrong Jackie?” I asked placing my fork down, in the middle of eating my lunch.

“We have a woman requesting for you, she doesn’t want anyone else to help her except you,” Jackie said and I sighed and then pulled out my paper and looked at my schedule.

“I have a one o’clock appointment,” I said and then looked at my watch to see that it was twelve thirty.

“I know, we’re going to switch you with Alex, she’ll handle your one, this is a big time regular,” Jackie said and I sighed and nodded my head, “Get going! I’ll clean this up.”

“All right, thanks,” I said and then walked out of the employee lounge, placed my apron on and walked out down the hallway and towards the front desk.

“Sarah!” I heard a squeal and turned my head to see my client.

“Vero! Oh my god, hi!” I smiled brightly and walked over towards the petite Frenchwoman and wrapped my arms around her, “Look at you, you’re-“

“Pregnant! I know! Is it wonderful, no!” she laughed and I placed my hand on her stomach, it was just a little bump, but she was pregnant.

“What happen to you sweetie, I expected to see you in October, not now,” I said, looking outside to see the January weather.

“I know, I know, but with the lockout, Marc wanted to stay home and practice in Canada,” she said and I nodded my head.

“I’m guessing you’re my client that was insisting on me,” I giggled and Vero smiled brightly.

“I very sorry if I interrupter you-“

“No, no, for you- Anything,” I smiled brightly, “So, what are we going today?”

“The works honey, nails, hair, makeup! Hockey is back and they’re having this big event tonight to celebrate the start of the season,” Vero said and I nodded my head and walked her over towards my chair and sat her down, “Marc told me to spoil myself, so that’s exactly what I’m doing.”

“Good for you,” I laughed and pulled her hair out of the clip that she had it in, “What are you planning on doing?”

“I’d like a new style actually,” Vero said and then dug through her purse and pulled out a picture from a magazine, “I like how she has her hair.”

“What does your dress look like?” I asked and Vero smirked and pulled out her phone, scrolled to the picture and handed my her iPhone.

“Is it not beautiful, no?” she asked and I smiled and nodded my head, looking at the long strapless dark blue sleek dress.

“Oh V, you’re going to look beautiful,” I said and Vero smiled and nodded her head, “Ok, so you would like your hair up?” I asked, looking at the picture, ‘…I can do that…’

“Is it doable?” Vero asked and I smiled and nodded my head.

“I’m going to do your nails first though,” I said and she nodded her head, “Do you know what you would like?”

“No, not yet, I need to look at the colors,” Vero said and I nodded my head and grabbed the pamphlet of all the nail polish colors that we had.

“You look at that, I’ll be right back,” I said and Vero nodded her head. I walked over towards the front desk and saw Tess and Jackie standing behind, digging their faces into their computers, “Hey, Veronique wants the works, hair, nails and makeup-“

“Jesus, that’s like four hours,” Jackie growled and I sighed, “People can’t just walk in here with no appointments and expect to be waited on hand and foot.”

“She’s a good client, Jackie,” I said, “She brings in a lot of money, her and her friends, they’re here at least once a month, if not more,” I stated and Jackie sighed.

“I know, you’re right, but it’s just so-“

“I know, calm down, I’ll stay overtime if you need me,” I said and Jackie looked at me with a sad smile and nodded her head.

“I know you would, you’re too good to us, but you got the kids to worry about,” Jackie said and I sighed and nodded my head, “Thank you though, Sar.”

“No problem,” I said and then pulled out my schedule, “Do you know what you’re going to do with my three other clients? Can you call Doris, she’s my four, she’s gunna want only me to do her nails- remember what happened last-“

“Yeah I remember, I’ll make some calls, and call people in.”

“All right,” I said and left my schedule and walked back over towards Vero to see that she looked like she was thinking really hard.

“Ok, I have it down to two, what should I go for?” she asked and I looked at the colors to see that they were both blue but different shades.

“Well, let’s take a look,” I said and then turned around, walked over towards the shelf where all the polish was and grabbed the two blue that she was looking at, “Let me see your nail,” I said and she held up her hand and I brushed one polish on my nail, and the other on another nail.

“Oooo, this one,” she said and I smiled and nodded my head, “I like the sparkles! The sparkles are pretty, no?”

“They are,” I giggled, “Come on, let’s get your mani, pedi started.”

“Finally,” she laughed and we walked towards the area where we did nails.

She sat down in the massage chair and turned it on, grabbing a magazine and started to read some stuff as I set the water up in prepping to do her pedicure.

“So Sarah, how are you, I haven’t seen you since June,” she said sadly.

“I’ve been pretty good, finally moved into my new home.”

“How are Missy and Jake taking it?”

“They’ve been really good about it,” I smiled, starting to work on her pedicure.

“You were saying that Missy was graduating from preschool?” Vero said and I nodded my head.

“Yup, my little princess just started kindergarten in September and Jake is in first grade,” I said and then pulled out my phone and shower her a picture of my little rugrats.

“Aw, and what was your dog’s name?”

“Rocko,” I answered as she handed me back my phone.

“So cute,” she said and I nodded my head, “So how do you do it? Is there someone who picks them up after school?”

“Um, they’re both in daycare, a pretty penny, but totally worth it,” I smiled, “They pick the two of them up, since they’re at the same school. The place is opened until seven, so when I get out at five thirty, I head straight over to there.”

“Wow, busy day,” she said and I nodded my head.

“It’s worth it,” I said and Vero nodded her head.

“Does Danny come around anymore?” Vero asked and I shook my head.

“Not lately, but you never know- Danny will show up when Danny wants to show up,” I sighed.

“So tell me about this house!” Vero says excitedly.

“Um, well it’s a four bedroom house, two story, attic, basement, two car garage,” I said and laughed a little when Vero got a little ticklish on her feet, “Sorry.”

“No, it’s all right,” she smiled, “Is there a backyard?”

“Yes, nice big backyard, I told the kids I’ll get them one of those blow up pools for next summer since we have a level yard,” I said and Vero nodded her head.

“That sounds lovely,” she said and I smiled, “You really take good care of those kids, I hope I’m as good as you.”

I smile, not looking up towards her and nod my head, “I’m sure you’ll be wonderful.”

“I hope so, poor Marc is terrified and excited at the same time- hell, I am too,” she said and I giggled, “I have to keep remembering that Missy and Jake are really your- What are they again, I keep forgetting.”

“I just say that they’re my younger brother and sister, even though everyone thinks that they’re actually my children,” I said and Vero nodded my head, “But really they’re my younger siblings and also my niece and nephew.”
