Barefoot Blue Jean Night

Chapter 9

“Yes mom, I’m fine. I promise.” I swear we’re exactly alike.

“Are you sure? Because Steph called and told me what happened at the game the other night. You’re not coming here to run away, are you?” She sighs.

I groan. “Contrary to what Steph told you, I am completely fine. I think at 30 years old, I can handle an ex boyfriend. That’s actually the reason I’m coming to visit. His captain/best friend vouches for his behaviour the last couple years and says he’s changed. Since I’m a sucker for punishment, I want to go to Dallas to see him and hear him out. I owe him that much since I slapped him the other night.”

“You did what?!” she screams.

“Steph left that out didn’t she? Yeah I don’t know what came over me. I was raging with emotions and it just happened. He took it like a champ though.” I chuckle.

She laughs. “He always was very resilient like that.”

“Yeah, he was.”

March Break approaches for school so I figured now would be a good time for a trip to Austin. My parents will meet us at the airport and we’ll head to their house for the next week. Jamie had the day off so he offered to pick us up, but I declined. I didn’t want him to waste one of his rare off days to pick us up an hour away only to drive back home, empty handed. I think he was hoping I would stay in Dallas so there is more of a chance to see Tyler. I’ll hand it to him, it was a good idea.

Tickets are waiting at the box office.

We’ve been here for two days already and I forgot how much I love Texas. The sun is magnificent. I’ve already started a tan. Mason wouldn’t stop bugging about going to watch Jamie play so I caved and called him. He was surprised to hear from me so quickly, but happy nonetheless.

My parents decided to join in the festivities. We would all head to the game and watch it together, but my parents will make the drive back to Austin with Mason. Jamie made me promise to go out with him after the game, my mom happily agreed to watch Mason for the night. She ended that conversation with a wink. Ugh, seriously mom?

“What, you think I’m just gonna sleep with him again?”

“No, it may make you a little less uptight, though.” My Jaw dropped.

“Mom! Damn, living in Texas has given you a backbone.”

“I’m just saying it wouldn’t kill you to loosen up a little.” She pats my arm.

“I’m just worried that he won’t take it seriously. Like, he’ll just expect me to forgive every bad thing he said or did. I can’t do that, at least not for a while. He shattered my heart and I have yet to repair it. Not to mention everything that happened with Steve. You know, I felt bad for Steve in the beginning. He knew I was still so hung up on Tyler, but he waited for me to be okay with it. He wanted to show me that not all guys are like that. I really did love him. Near the end though, I remember we were laying in bed one night and he looks at me. I can’t even describe it. But he says to me, ‘I want you to move on when I’m gone. I want you to feel love again, like I showed you that you deserve. Please say that one day you’ll talk to Tyler and forgive him. You deserve some closure, at least’. Bloody bastard, he was. Even in his dying days, he showed me so much love.”

She wipes my cheeks with her thumb and then settles her arm around my shoulder.
“I didn’t mean to make you cry, baby. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Steve like a son, and I love Mase with my whole heart, I just don’t want you to take that for granted. After all these years, Tyler is still madly in love with you and somehow Steve knew that. That has to count for something. When you see him, just hear him out. He may have broken your heart but he broke his too. Give him a chance to show you how much he still loves you. It may take a day or it may take 2 years, but just be patient.”

Jamie, don’t make me regret this decision. Oh, make it worth it and score a goal for the kid, would ya?

Tyler and I will each score a goal for you and Mase. I won’t tell you whose is whose though

Bastard. I was hoping he wouldn’t tell Tyler I was here, but alas, no such luck.

Sitting in our seats, courtesy of Captain Benn, it was a whole different experience than in Boston. Sure, Boston fans are eccentric to say the least, but Stars fans are more homely. They take care of each other, for better or worse. Oh, and of course our seats are behind the home bench. Mason was so excited since he basically got to see every player. Jamie smirked when he saw me and waved at Mason. Tyler glanced at me but didn’t make any motion.

The game was quite eventful. The final score 5-2 against the Colorado Avalanche. Jamie fulfilled his promise. A goal for Mason and a goal for me. Obviously mine was from Tyler. No doubt about that.

“Now, keep them separate so you can get each of the guys to sign them.” I tell Mason as we wait in the hallway for the guys to appear.

Tyler appeared first out of the doorway of the two men. Mason ran up to him and asked him to sign one of the pucks. Tyler obliged with no question and gave the kid a smile.

“Hey Tyler, can I, umm....talk to you?” I approach slowly.

“As long as you promise not to slap me again.” I see the small smirk appear on his lips before it disappears quickly.

I let out a small giggle and raise my hand. “Scout’s honour.”

“You feel like some coffee? I know a great little shop.” He nervously scratches the back of his neck.

“Yeah, coffee sounds great.”
