Showtime

Not So Captain Serious

Evelyn made her way into United Center with her cameraman, Drew following her. Smiling, she showed the security guards her press badge before she placed any metal objects she had on her onto the conveyor belt. She walked through the metal detectors without a beep. Picking up her belongings, she waited for Drew to come through before they made their way through the crowd to the press room, showing their badges once again.

“Okay,” Evelyn sighed, looking at the mirror in the room, fixing her stray hairs. “Game time starts at seven thirty, so we should be out there an hour before then for interviews with the teams.”

“Remember, they are playing the Pens tonight,” Drew reminded her because she had no idea who the Blackhawks were up against.

“Penguins, right,” she sighed, feeling somewhat nervous.

This was not her first time out on the field doing interviews, but doing sports interview is not her thing. She did a few during college to no avail. They were just not her thing, so her nerves stood close to being shot. Drew did the best he could with helping her with some questions that Naomi will ask during the pregame, during, and after the game, but he was just the cameraman. He knew that she was nervous and tried to reassure her that she will do well. Before either of them knew, it was time to head out to the side of the rink to start setting up her mic and getting the camera rolling.

“We are on in 5,” Drew gave her a reminder on how much longer she had. “Are you ready and good?”

“I’m as ready as I can be,” Evelyn ran her hand through her hair. “But get back at me later if I’m good or not.”

Before she knew it, Drew held up his hand while counting down the seconds at this point. She could hear Julia’s voice in her earpiece telling her that she could do this and to look less nervous. After hearing Meredith’s voice saying her name and that she was here at the Blackhawks game, covering for Naomi, she saw the red light start glowing, and heard Julia say now.

“Thank you, Meredith,” Evelyn put her newscaster smile on. “I am here at the United Center, waiting on warm-ups to start and as you can hear, the crowd is ready for this game to get underway.”

Patrick skated out onto the ice for warm-ups, which he knew that he wanted to get a few slap-shots in. He skated off to the right side of the goal, taking a puck with him on the way. Waiting for Crawford to get in the net, he practices a few of his moves with the puck, sending it side to side and in between his skates. Once Crawford found his way into the net, Kane skated forward and took a quick shot which Crawford deflected off his stick easily.

He skated back to his corner, looking around out into the crowd and back to his bench, only to notice a brunette standing with Coach Q. The same brunette that shared the taxi with him last night. So that’s how she knew me. Patrick sighed when the thought came through his head, distracting him as Jonathan passed the puck back towards him. Jonathan noticed Kane spaced out, staring at the bench. Turning, he noticed a sportscaster talking to Coach Q.

“Hey Pat,” Jon gained his attention. “You alright man?”

“Uh,” Patrick looked towards his captain, noticing him staring at him. “Sorry Cap, just got a little distracted.”

“Why?” He skated circles around his right-winger.

“That woman talking to Coach is her.” Pat continued to stare at the woman.

“Okay,” Jon got confused with his sentence. “Her who?”

Pat glanced at his captain with a sigh, “My mystery woman.”

“Seriously?” He was shocked to say the lease.

“Yeah and no wonder she knew who I was,” he groaned, knocking the puck around, skating off, leaving his captain in confusion.

Jon took off his teammate, following him around the half of the rink. “What did you mean by that?”

“Well, isn’t it obvious?” Pat growled, making Jon stare at him confused once more. “She probably followed me last night to get a story on me.”

“Did she question you at all last night?”

Thinking about to their taxi ride home, Patrick could not come up with a single question. In fact, he only remembers them talking briefly and he did most of the talking. He shook his head, giving his captain his answer.

“Then she wasn’t doing a story on you Pat,” Jon chuckled. “I mean, you only saw her when you shared your cab with her right?”

“Yeah,” he smiled back, feeling more relaxed.

Patrick noticed Coach Q waving him over, no doubt that they wanted to do an interview with him. Evelyn sighed with relief once her first interview was done with Coach Q. Drew told her to relax, because she did a fantastic job with her questions. She could not relax because she knew she would be talking with Patrick Kane next and it was making her nervous all over again. She only hoped that he did not recognized her from last night, but something told her he did. Stopping at the side of the entrance to the bench, he smirked at the woman in front of him.

“Hello,” he had planned on saying something along the lines of, mystery woman, but he did not know if the camera was running or not.

Evelyn turned toward the camera slightly while still slightly facing Patrick. “I am now here with Patrick Kane, or more commonly known now as Mr. Showtime. Patrick, are you planning on living up to that nickname tonight during the first game of the season?”

“I can only hope for the best, but ultimately, I sure hope that I can live up to that name tonight,” he grinned at the young sportscaster.

“Now we all know that Patrick Sharp is back into play this season,” she noticed him nodding his head, confirming he could hear her, as she heard her boss in her earpiece reminding her she has two minutes left. “What are your expectations of him during this game tonight and did you have any worries during the preseason with his play with him just having hip surgery?”

“Nothing different than any other player out there. I expect he will come out here as he always had, head in the game and ready to score any chance he has. During preseason, he gave it his all and played as he always had. As he plays, I forget he had hip surgery not too long ago.”

“Thank you, Patrick,” she smiled at him. “Have a great game out there.”

“Thanks,” he gave her his million-dollar smile before skating back out on the ice to get more practice. Frowning, he remembered he still did not know her name.

Kaitlyn sat up in the box with the other WAGS with Braydon. Most nights, she would be out in the crowd behind the boys and have one of the other WAGS watch her son, but tonight was the first night she was watching a game with Abby again. She had missed having Abby around and could not wait to watch a game with her again.

“I’m so happy you guys are back,” she grinned, giving Sharp’s wife a bear hug.

“I’m happy to be back,” Abby laughed, glancing around the room. “I’ve missed you ladies.”

“Mama!” Braydon giggled, point towards the glass.

Looking out, she noticed Jonathan waving the tip of his stick slightly. He normal did this to get their son’s attention. She smiled as she picked up their son, so he could get a better view out of the glass, who waved back his father. Confused, she tried to decipher what Jon had been mouthing to her. To her, it looked like he had been saying something about a monkey. She shrugged her shoulders, trying to show him she did not understand, until he saw him skate slightly behind Patrick Kane.

“Hey Kate,” Abby watched on the screen in the room that was tuned into NBC Chicago. Gaining her attention, Abby pointed towards the TV screen. “What in the world is Jonathan doing?”

Kaitlyn glanced at the screen to see her fiancée pointing towards the camera, mouthing something again. With his mouth guard in, it was still very hard to make out what he was trying to say. It still looked like something about a monkey, but then she noticed the way Patrick was acting with the woman on the television. Running towards the window, peering down, letting Jon know she understood him.

“That’s Patrick mystery woman!” Kaitlyn exclaimed, grinning widely, turning back the group of women.

“Seriously?” Jana questioned with her thick accent, remember the story Kaitlyn told them earlier today.

“She’s good looking,” Abby added, as Kaitlyn nodded her head in agreement. “And her name is Evelyn Madison.”

Everyone giggled as Patrick’s interview ended and the station replayed Jonathan’s antics, as the person in the news room questioned on what was wrong with him. It went back to Evelyn, who now had Jonathan in front of her to interview.

“Mind if I ask what you were doing in the background as I interviewed Patrick just now?” Evelyn questioned, making Kaitlyn laugh at her husband to be’s blush.

“Uh,” he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck embarrassed. “I was just trying to get my son’s attention from the box.”

“Nice save Jonny Boy,” Kaitlyn giggled. “Nice save.”

“Guess this shows a different side of him out there now, other than Captain Serious,” Abby giggled with her.
