Afternoon
A lonely granite countertop.
A bar stool motionless behind the surface.
The unfocused scenery of a clean living room in the background.
Footsteps are heard approaching the stool as the nearby furniture slightly shakes with each step taken.
A man strolls into view: a smartphone in one hand; a steaming bowl of pasta in another. With a sigh, he settles himself on the stool, then lays his bowl and phone on the smooth surface.
The man has an oval-shaped face with rounded, cool gray-coloured eyes under thick eyebrows. He bears dirty blond hair swept to the left, stubble lining his jaw and upper lip, and freckles dotting his neck in a line. All that is seen of his attire is a white T-shirt. This is Connor McDavid, the captain of the Edmonton Oilers.
Connor silently picks up his fork from his bowl, stirs the pasta in the bowl for a moment, then and places a forkful of pasta in his mouth. While chewing, he reverts his attention to his smartphone, turns it on and unlocks it, and enters the calendar app.
What do I have for the rest of the day? he thinks to himself as he taps on the current date.
The date opens up, showing the hourly schedule the day contains.
He scrolls down the different coloured blocks, nodding his head at each one while mentally checking them off: Morning skate, check, meeting with Coach, check, media practice, check, and now…
Connor scans through the white space between two blocks. His eyes land on the block below in the evening times, reading its event:
Seven o’clock: NHL Expansion Power Player Ceremony, 1185 Sixth Avenue, New York City, New York…
Connor swallows hard as his eyes widen at the unfamiliar event. “What?” he sputters. He drops his fork to cup his phone in his two hands. He hits the event’s block.
The date’s chart slides over, revealing the event’s specific details.
“NHL Expansion… July eighth… Calendar, Alert, Notes—” He halts reading out loud under his breath as he catches what is typed below in the notes section:
A mandatory ceremony to attend for all NHL power players. An event filled with celebration, festivities, salutations, and of course, an after party! Looking forward to seeing you there! -T.P. Gorman.
“‘T.P. Gorman…’” Connor lowers his arms with his phone as he peers upward with a skeptical expression. “He’s...he’s…” His eyes light up. “That’s right!”
He perks back down at his phone’s screen. “He’s the holographic guy that’s apparently the NHL founder!” He flicks his eyes back up. “He told me that my powers have a purpose. Just didn’t tell me what the purpose was.” He rolls his eyes with a scoff. “Well, when I see him tonight, I’ll ask him for sure.”
He gazes at the event with a growing smirk. “I’ll be attending, Gorman. I’m looking forward to seeing YOU there.” He then hits the home button, exiting from the app, turns off the screen, and places his phone aside.
Connor turns back to his bowl of pasta and takes in another bite. He stares out at the window ahead of him, which is showing the beautiful nature of the Canadian summer afternoon. His mind starts to wonder about the possibilities of his powers:
Maybe I am a power player...or I’m something better. I can save people...or gain control over the impossible.
He lowers his gaze, landing it on his free left hand, which has its palm facing upward.
Connor mentally grabs control of his power flow, guiding it to his hand. He senses the rushing, warm sensation surge through his arm, building up to his hand.
Instantly, his hand begins radiating a calming, rich yellow glow.
“But whatever it is,” Connor mutters, finishing off his thoughts, “it better be as good as being captain. If not, better.”
