"A Fanciful Day at the Beach"

Back on land, Kailer is still lying on his towel under the umbrella. He lowers his book from his vision and peers to his left.

He spots bright sun above the cliffs, notifying him that it is noon.

“Ah, it's noon!” He places his book aside and sits up, then reaches over to his right and pulls a white and blue cooler into view.

He turns to his left, where the other three are located. “Lunchtime!”

Sitting next to him on the other side of the umbrella pole, Nolan turns to him from his novel, eyeing the cooler. “Ooo, lovely!”

“YAAAY!!!” Brett and Jake then rush into view excitedly, halting next to the scientist.

Jake begins zipping around the cooler, glancing at its every nook and cranny. “What is it, what is it, what is it?!” He drops to his knees and leans toward it while sniffing.

Kailer uses one hand to open up the cooler while using the other to push the nosy goalie away. “They’re sandwiches!” He finally throws the lid of the cooler away from the hole, revealing its contents.

Lying on cubes of ice are triangle-cut sandwiches bundled in plastic wrap.

“White bread slathered with creamy mayonnaise in between thick slices of juicy deli ham and cheddar cheese!” Kailer describes, his voice thick with awe.

Brett and Jake stare at the beautiful sandwiches in wonder. “OOO!!!”

“Sorry, I can't have that,” they hear Nolan stating flatly behind them.

All three of them instantly peer behind their shoulders, staring at him with shock. “Huh?”

“I'm dairy and gluten intolerant,” Nolan explains, clutching onto half of a coconut shell. “And I’m staying away from eggs.”

Brett gawks at him while picking a sandwich from the cooler. “So what CAN you eat?”

Nolan holds up his coconut shell for the others to see, revealing it to be filled with a thick purple substance topped with slices of fruit, gluten-free granola, and delicate flowers. “Açaí bowl.”

Jake gives the bowl a disgusted look. “Uuugh, that looks weird.”

Nolan gives him a harsh glare. “No one asked for your opinion.” He then sharply turns his head away from him.

Brett now has his sandwich slice unwrapped and takes a bite of it. His eyes light up at the warm, delicious flavours. “These are good!” he tells Kailer. “But not as good as pizza though.”

Kailer swallows his bite of his sandwich. “I'm glad you enjoy these. They're my favorite American snack!”

Jake just grabs four triangles, unwraps them, and stuffs them into his mouth at once.

Brett gawks at the eating style of his partner. “Whoa, Jake Dog, slow down. Save some for Claguer and Duker.”

Jake swallows them with ease. “But they’re sooo good!”

Kailer peers around the empty shore with narrowed eyes. “Where are those men anyway?”

Nolan perks up from his açaí bowl, scanning the vacant, relaxing scenery. “I don't see them…” He drops his spoon, placing his bowl on his lap, and cups his mouth with both hands. “CLAGUER! SHMOOKER! COME OVER HERE AND HAVE THESE YUMMY SANDWICHES I CAN’T HAVE!!!”

The crashing of the waves against the sand and the cawing of the seagulls is the only response he receives.

Jake has his working nose in the air, tapping into his supernatural senses to track the two friends. “I sense them…”

All three teenagers silently turn to the goalie with attentive eyes.

“...they're in the ocean.” Jake stares out at the line where the lapping waters appear to touch the light blue sky. “Way deep in the ocean. Over the horizon.”

The three slowly turn their heads to stare out at the distant, yet menacing horizon.

“Kale!” Nolan scrambles to his feet, alarm is written all over his face. “Reid!” He instantly sprints into the ocean.

He wades through the shallow waters before diving in as the sandbar dips downward. He dips his arms through the air in a circular motion, one following the other, as he kicks his legs to propel himself, spraying water behind him, and rotating his head from left to right and right to left to breathe.

Where are they? Where are they? Where are they?

He halts his swimming and begins treading water, breathing heavily as water drips down his face. He hastily turns his head, searching his surroundings visually. I don't see them. Do I have to dive in? Omg, omg, omg...

His panicked thoughts immediately fade away as his eyes land on a strange sight: Yards away from him is a churning whirlpool, sucking in water as it glows turquoise inside.

His eyes widen at the frightening sight. Turn around, turn around, turn around…!

He begins to twist his body away from the vortex. Yet the waters around him are pulled by the whirlpool, tugging Nolan along through the water.

“AAAHHH!!!”

He plummets through its empty centre, being tossed and turned by its twisting, glowing strips of water, before falling through its bottom and disappearing.
