AAOOOSC! Exposed!

Thanks A Lot

Jingling and clanking echoes from the other side of the front door to Kale’s apartment. The doorknob shakes before the door swings wide open. Kale appears on the other side before rushing in and reaching out to the light switch to his right.

Yet he pauses when he feels the switch already flipped.

With confusion, he pulls his hand away and peers up. His eyes widen as he notices that his main room is already brightly lit with the ceiling lights.

He then hears a throat being cleared from deep in the room.

Kale reverts his eyes to the living room area. It is occupied to his surprise: Plopped on the sofa are Brett Howden and Jake Oettinger; sitting on each of the two reclining chairs is Nolan and Carter Hart. They have sharp eyes and frowns aimed straight at the newcomer.

“Ohhh…” Kale gives them a weak smile in an attempt to thwart their harsh expressions; he loosely waves his hand. “Hey, guys, what are you doing—”

Nolan rises from his seat and storms up to Kale. “Explain. Now.” He halts in front of him and sticks his lit-up smartphone into his face.

Kale pulls his neck back to give space between the phone and his face. He plucks the phone from Nolan’s grasp and holds it at a reasonable range.

Displaying on the screen is the web homepage of NHL. Everywhere from videos to pictures is Kale’s supernatural incident: the purple flash, Nick being thrown across the rink with the energy, the energy coming from Kale. Headlines blaring words such as SUPERNATURAL, SHOCKING, and SUPERPOWERS covers the page.

All Kale can do is drop his jaw at the feedback with eyes as wide as pucks.

“Oh man, I-I…” He slowly lifts his eyes up ahead of him.

Nolan is still in his place in front of Kale, not appearing one bit amused. The other three have gotten up and are now standing by Nolan’s sides.

Kale lowers the phone with a guilty look. “Look, guys, I’m sorry, but I panicked. This Ducks guy was shoving me and then he started punching me and you know how terrible I am with hand-to-hand combat and I just panicked because I was in pain and I-I just used my powers—”

“You know you’re not allowed to use your powers during games, right?” Brett cuts in firmly with furrowed, thick eyebrows. “People can AND will take it the wrong way.”

“I know!” Kale throws his hands in the air with the phone. “It was just a panic response! I’m so sorry!”

Jake stares down at him with sadden betrayal written all over his face. “Now everyone knows about our powers and then we’ll have our powers taken away and then we’ll be all sad because we don’t have any more cool powers…” He dips his head with his glowing palms facing upward. “I just got them too…”

Kale gives him a look of sympathy. “Aw, Jake Dog…” He reaches out his free hand to pat him.

Jake flinches at the brush of his fingers against his shoulder; he shuffles closer to Brett, getting farther from the defenceman.

Kale sighs heavily at the rejection and pulls back his hand. “I didn’t MEAN to do it, there’s got to be a way to fix this—”

“If it weren’t for your pathetic fighting skills on the ice, none of this would be happening,” Nolan spits out, sticking his face into his. “I told you hand-to-hand combat is useful to know!”

Kale cranes his head, causing his friend to back away as well. “Maybe-maybe it’s a GOOD thing that I used my powers on the ice!

“NOTHING good can come out of this, Kale,” Brett states firmly. “We’re either going to lose our careers or powers. You know how people hate cheating.”

Carter eyes Kale with uncertainty. “I would be yelling at you too, but I’m in a different league, so it’s not really affecting me.” His face falls into seriousness and he jabs a finger at him. “But if the AHL power player system falls as well, I’m coming after you.”

“Bottomline,” Nolan continues on brusquely, “you’ve just set up every NHL power player’s doom.” He then rips his phone from Kale’s hand. “Thank you very much for wrecking our lives, Kale Clague!”

With that, Nolan breezes past him while fuming with his cheeks burning a bright red.

In despair, Kale whirls around and follows him with his eyes. “Pat!”

Nolan throws the door open, storms through the doorway, and instantly slams the door behind him.

Kale lets out a huff of dejection. He then turns around to face the others.

Yet now staring back him is the empty living room.

Kale sighs and dips his head. “Right,” he murmurs. “Phantom powers.”
