AAOOOSC! Exposed!

New Rules

Regarding the disclosure and adaption of the Supernatural Universe

October 3, 2018

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have discovered that the supernatural is within our league and players. It is exciting to ascertain such an unknown and potent ability certain players have, yet action must be taken to ensure fairness and safety for everyone in the league.

The league has decided that no power player, the term used to describe these certain players with supernatural abilities, shall use any form of their supernatural abilities during games, practices, or any other events held or sponsored by the NHL. There is one except, which will be described in the following paragraph.

We hear the public’s demand for more coverage on these captivating powers. Therefore, we have created an event during games each game shall be holding: Power player matches.

Power player matches are one-on-one supernatural battles that are to be held during the second intermission of each game. Participating in these battles are two power players: one from each team. There will be a golden stick on each end of the ice. The objective is to retrieve the stick from the opponent’s end of the ice first in the battle clock’s span of ten minutes. The first power player to accomplish that task will be given a point to their team. It is the equivalent of scoring a goal. This will make these battles critical and taken seriously.

Just like in the actual game of hockey, there are rules for the power player matches:

  1. All power players must be wearing their hockey equipment, minus their gloves and stick. Helmets and mouthguards are required for safety.
  2. The zones of the ice in games remain the same in the matchups.
  3. All power players must start behind the blue line of their zone of the ice.
  4. Power players are allowed to activate powers at the command of the announcer. They must not attack until the battle commences.
  5. The golden hockey stick must be placed on the goal line on its own stand with its blade parallel to the goal line.
  6. To commence the battle, there will be three red lights counting down one second each. After the third red light, a green light will shine along with a buzzer. Power players are allowed to move when the buzzer sounds with the green light.
  7. Power players are not allowed to touch the sticks in their own zone.
  8. Power players are not allowed to move out of position before the buzzer and the green light.
  9. Power players must cross into the opponent’s zone in order to retrieve the golden stick fairly.
  10. Power players must use only their team powers to combat.
  11. The battle ends in one power players successfully capturing the golden stick on the opposite end of the ice.
  12. If the battle clock runs out and no power players captures the golden stick, neither team will receive a point.
  13. If a power player cannot participate, a shootout will take the matchup’s place.

These matches are for the entertainment of the crowd, the acceptance of the supernatural with the sport of hockey, and the enhancement the sport itself.

This new event will begin in the 2018-2019 opening night. The schedule is as follows for that day:
  • Braden Holtby (WAS) @ Sidney Crosby (PIT)
  • Brett Howden (NYR) @ John Tavares (TOR)
  • Steven Stamkos (TBL) @ Nolan Patrick (PHI)
  • Zach Parise (MIN) @ Jake Oettinger (DAL)
  • Clayton Keller (ARI) @ Kale Clague (LAK)

“So?” Tommy flicks his eyes from the article regarding the power player matchups to the video call that is being held on the other side of his screen.

The other four founders appear troublesome and unsure.

“Well,” Ed croaks out with his chin on his interlaced fingers, “this will be interesting…”

“It’s better than the power player system being shut down,” Maurice points out.

“I did not expect the public to react to powers like this.” Dani holds her hands out in disbelief. “Like they actually want to see MORE?”

“This just might change the fabric of the sport as we know it…” President Roosevelt gazes at Tommy with inquisitiveness. “Are you okay with that, Gorman?”

Tommy shrugs. “I have to be. Like what Maurice said—” He holds his hand out toward the screen. “—it IS much better than having the system shut down.”

“Is this gonna be implemented in our leagues as well?” Ed asks with narrowed eyes.

Tommy shakes his head at him. “I do not know; it’s up to the public and commissioners to decide. But for the NHL, we are going to have it—well, we have to have it—and it is going to start on the first day of the regular season.”

Maurice stares down at the NHL founder. “How do you feel toward the public knowing the supernatural?”

He lets out a heavy sigh with downcast eyes. “It is a bit discomforting, to be honest, yet relieving because they took it well.” He lifts his eyes back upon the four with hope. “As long as they respect the power players and their powers, then I will be fine.”

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, five pairs of puck-sized eyes are staring at an open laptop.

Kale is sitting in front of his laptop in his dining room, reading the article with his four friends about their new task as supernatural hockey players.

Brett gawks at the screen. “Ohhh…”

“...my…,” Nolan finished off on the other side.

Jake lets out a trepidatious whimper.

Carter merely throws his head back with a large smile and a chuckle. “Hahahaaa!” He peers at the four NHL power players. “Have fun with that, guys!”

Nolan, who is standing up, flicks his eyes down to Kale. “Kale, you are the master of destruction.”

“Hey, it could’ve been worse!” Kale spins around on his counter stool to face the others. “We could’ve lost our powers or careers!”

“But-but I don’t wanna fight against anyone!” Jake squeaks out with large, watery eyes.

Brett turns to his friend with a hand on his own chest. “Jake Dog, you fought for me!”

Jake softens his expression toward his bestie. “Only for you would I go and fight!” His face drops as he stares at the tile flooring. “But for my team…”

He scoffs with a playful roll of his eyes. “Jake, sort out your properties.”

Jake gives him a sweet smile. “You’re my number one priority.”

Brett can’t help but give him a smirk. “I actually like that.” He pats his shoulder.

Jake naturally places his head on his shoulder and nuzzles his neck with a large smile.

Brett jolts and chuckles at the ticklish feeling. “Jake Dog…!”

Nolan rolls his eyes with annoyance at the affection he is forced to witness. “Ugh.” He lowers his eyes and asks, “Who am I gonna have to fight against tomorrow night…?”

Kale’s eyes light up. “Oh! It was just on this article…!” He leans toward the laptop’s screen and scrolls up in search of the schedule.

“Hopefully the AHL doesn’t have to do this,” Carter speaks up. “I haven’t been using my powers much.”

Nolan darts his eyes up at him. “Except for scaring me.”

The goalie turns to him with raised eyebrows. “Well, using my powers for combat that is.”

Nolan narrows his eyes at him. “You don’t consider me throwing my stars at you as combat?”

“Nah, it’s a scared reaction.” He playfully grins at him while flicking his hand over his shoulder.

Nolan slaps Carter’s upper arm before turning away from him and hugging himself with a fuming expression.

“I’m actually stoked for this!” Brett pipes up to Carter. “I finally get to fight—” He pumps his free arm in the air. “—HAVE to fight! I am going to obliterate everyone!”

Nolan peers at him from behind his shoulder with sharp eyes. “You better not obliterate ME when we play against each other.”

Jake peers up at his bestie from his shoulder. “I thought we were supposed to get the golden sticks.”

Brett cranes his head to his right to get a glance at him. “Yeah, I’ll get those after obliteration.”

“Found it!” Kale slides his laptop to Nolan.

Nolan spins to face the screen and leans toward it with anticipation. His face immediately drops to a sour look. “Look at that, I’m playing against the Bolts.” He turns the device for his friend to see.

Carter raises his eyebrows at the center’s first matchup. “Oh, the electric captain, eh?” He turns to him.

Nolan straightens up with crossed arms. “Yup.”

Jake pops his head off from Brett’s shoulder and leans forward toward the laptop. “Who am I gonna play, who am I gonna play?”

Kale grabs his laptop and slides it to the other side of the countertop.

Jake follows the travelling laptop with his eyes before it halts in front of him. He gazes at it with horror. “I’m gonna fight against the Wild,” he squeaks out. “This is gonna be…”

Nolan narrows his eyes at him. “Don’t say it.”

Brett smirks at him. “...wild.”

Silence fills the room.

Then Brett breaks the silence by bursting into crazy laughter, throwing his head back with a large smile.

In irritation, Nolan reaches over to him from behind Kale and slaps his shoulder.

Brett instantly jolts at the stinging impact, abruptly stopping his laughter. “Ow!” He holds his struck upper arm and gives him a scowl. “Someone’s bitter they can’t make puns as good as me!”

“No, I just don’t like puns in general,” Nolan remarks flatly.

Carter gives Brett a weak smile. “I’ve learned he doesn’t like puns the hard way.”

Brett lets go of his arm and holds his now free hand toward the laptop. “Anyway, it’s me against the old man.”

Jake raises his eyebrows at the screen. “John?”

Brett nods with a growing smirk. “Yup: JT.” He then raises his fist in front of him as a bulky, metallic gun is being assembled over it from the bracelet around his wrist. “Oh-hoh, do I have him cornered or what?” He slightly pumps his arm, cocking the gun.

Nolan simply turns to the defenceman. “What about you, Kale?”

Kale snaps up his eyes up at him with a jolt. “Oh, um—” He snatches his laptop and pulls it back in front of him. “I’m against…” He peers at the schedule. “...the Coyotes.”

“It would be pathetic if you lose to them,” Nolan remarks with crossed arms.

“I’ll try not to lose.” Kale stares at the digital schedule, getting lost in its multi-coloured pixels. “I was the reason this is happening in the first place…”
