Twenty-One

Savannah had gone into work with a smile on her face. She would never admit it aloud but the smile was both because she was excited to finally be back and work and because Tyler had absolutely blown her mind that morning with sex.

But her smile dropped when she walked into Dominic’s office. “I go on leave for a couple weeks and suddenly you’re moving offices?” she questioned, seeing all of Dominic’s things packed up in boxes. “Getting a bigger office?”

“Savannah, have a seat. I need to catch you up on some things,” Dominic told her.

Savannah looked at him curiously before finally sitting down in the empty chair. His office chair was filled with boxes so Dominic stayed standing.

“I’m leaving,” he stated.

“I didn’t know you took vacation, Dominic,” she joked.

Dominic didn’t even crack a smile. “I’m not going to be working here anymore, Savannah.”

It took her a moment to try to process the information. “What? Since when? Did they fire you?” she started spouting out every question that was going through her mind.

Now Dominic started chuckling, causing Savannah to frown at him, putting her hands on her hips. “I didn’t get fired,” he assured her. “I got a call from DC. They have an opening out there. It’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he explained.

“So you got a promotion?”

“Something like that. I was going to call you and tell you but then you got cleared to come back to work,” Dominic told her. “I think there’s gonna be cake or something in the break room,” he changed subjects completely.

“Wow,” Savannah breathed. “So you’re really leaving. I mean, I get it. I moved here for a better job and to be closer to my sister and best friend. DC is a big move. Congratulations,” she finally smiled at him. “They’re lucky to have you,” she added sincerely.

“How are you doing? And I mean really how are you doing?” he changed subjects.

“I’m doing okay,” she replied. “My head sometimes isn’t one hundred percent, but I’m feeling good. There was something I was going to talk to you about but now that you’re leaving I guess it falls on someone else...who does it fall on? Who’s my boss now?” she suddenly asked. Liam had been in the Dallas office longer than her, though she had more overall experience in the DEA force. Maybe they’d bring in someone new altogether.

“That hasn’t been announced yet,” Dominic told her. “And as for now, I’m still your boss. So tell me what you were going to ask me.”

Savannah sighed. She hadn’t wanted to have this conversation before, and she still didn’t want it now that Dominic was leaving. “My doctor hasn’t cleared me fully. I can’t do strenuous work and I have to take breaks.”

Dominic nodded in understanding. “We’ll accommodate you in every way, you know that. Your brain here at a desk is just as useful as you in action out there. You’re smart, Savannah. And savvy. And while we appreciate you chasing after the bad guys, your intelligence and detective work is above anyone else’s I’ve ever seen.”

Savannah gave him a soft smile. “Thank you,” she told him.

“Look, Dawson was going to talk to you later but I’m letting the cat out of the bag,” Dominic began. That got Savannah’s attention. Dawson was the chief advisor and Dominic’s ultimate boss. Savannah had only met him once but knew he held all the power. “Savannah, I put in a recommendation for you to take my position...in a way.”

“What does that mean?” Savannah asked bluntly.

“I know you’ve only been in this office for a short time but it’s clear you’re a leader. I think you should take command. And make this position what works for you. Use that brain of yours and rest your body. Someone else can do the chasing. You have a knack for knowing people and knowing what’s going to happen before they’ve even thought it up.”

Savannah looked at him curiously. “What about Liam?” she asked. She didn’t want to jump over him for a promotion.

“Liam likes his job just like it is. He’s content,” Dominic told her. “Look, just talk to Dawson. See what he has to say and what he has to offer,” he said.

Savannah just stared at him for a moment, blinking. “You really think it’d be plausible for me to do my job behind a desk?” she raised an eyebrow. Of course she’d been thinking about that. Even before she and Tyler got back together. When the doctor first put her on medical leave. She wondered if she’d ever get to go back to work. And if she did, what would it entail.

She absolutely loved the adrenaline of chasing after the criminals. But like Dominic had said, she had a knack for the behind the scenes investigating, too. And she really did enjoy that. The rush that came when she cracked a case.

She had a lot of thinking to do. And people to talk to.

“C’mon, there’s cake in the break room. And then the rest of the day off,” Dominic told her, motioning for her to follow him down the hallway.

Savannah’s mind stayed on her conversation with Dominic. It was pretty clear that she wasn’t going to get much work done and she had told Dominic she was going to go home for the rest of the day. He didn’t argue and said he would see her the next day at work. He only had two more days until he was gone for good, and Savannah knew he had every intention of continuing to work on cases until he left.

She tried calling Tyler, but he didn’t pick up, so she called Alex, who was at home working on a project. She told her she’d meet her and Shea later to tell her everything that had transpired at work.

A little while later, Tyler called her back. “Hey, sorry, I was golfing,” he explained. “What’s going on?”

She had forgotten he was going golfing and now felt bad about calling him. “Are you done golfing? I’d rather talk to you in person,” she told him.

“Uh yeah,” he replied. “Want me to meet you at work?”

“No, I left a while ago,” she admitted.

“Is everything alright?”

“If you’re asking if I’m hurt, no, not physically. Just...some things have changed at work.”

“What does that mean?” he asked. She could tell he was confused but she didn’t want to talk about this over the phone.

“I’ll meet you at your place and explain everything,” she answered.

“Be there in ten,” he told her before hanging up. She didn’t bother telling him she was already at his place. It was weird how much it felt like home to her, not that she’d admit that to him.

She sat on his couch with Cash asleep in her lap and the other two dogs asleep on the floor at her feet. They really were a calming presence to her even though they usually were balls of energy.

The front door opened and Tyler rushed through it. “Hey, sorry, I hit traffic,” he told her before stopping to take a look at the scene in front of him. He smiled. “Damn, they’re tuckered out. How long have you been here?”

Savannah shrugged. “I don’t know, a little while,” she admitted.

“What’s going on?” he asked her as he took a seat on the couch next to her. Both were surprised that none of the dogs even moved.

“Dominic is leaving,” she blurted out. While Tyler tried to process that, she continued. “He got a job in Washington DC. He’s done on Friday.”

“Damn...wow,” he breathed in. “So what does that mean for the whole set up there now?” he asked her, folding his hands together as he leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees.

“I don’t know,” Savannah replied. “He said he put my name in for the running of his position,” she added. She waited for his reaction, which was extremely slow.

“So you’d be in charge?” he turned his head and looked at her with a cocked eyebrow.

“Yeah, I guess. At least in the office,” she told him.

“What do you mean?”

“I wouldn’t be going into the field really anymore. It’d be more a desk job. Just doing the research and finding the guys and the evidence to put them behind bars. Then other people would go after them,” she explained. She could see Tyler’s ears perk up at her words. This was exactly what he had wanted all along.

But then he saw her expression and knew she wasn’t as thrilled as he was. “But you don’t want that,” he spoke.

“I actually had planned on going in and talking to Dominic about taking a step back from the front line,” she admitted. “You know, before he dropped the bomb that he’s leaving.”

“So you want to just be on the inside now?” Tyler asked. She started giggling and it took Tyler a moment to understand why. He rolled his eyes. “And you say I have a dirty mind,” he told her as he reached over and grabbed her sides, intentionally tickling her.

She finally calmed down and went back to their conversation. “I’d miss the chase, but I’ve thought a lot about it. I know my concussion is going to hold me back. And it doesn’t look like I’m going to be a hundred percent recovered from it for a while,” she admitted. “And I think I’d like that role.”

Tyler smiled. “Well you know I like that role,” he told her.

“Hold on now, I haven’t actually been offered the job,” she reminded him. “I talk to Dawson tomorrow. He may not even want me,” she said.

“Well we’ll let the universe decide then. If you get the offer, it’s meant to be,” he replied.

She looked up at him. “Look at you, Mr. Sentimental,” she teased.

“It’s what drew you in,” he said sarcastically.

Savannah laughed. “Pretty sure I didn’t even like you when we first met,” she recalled. “And you just wanted to hook up with Shea,” she added.

He pressed his lips against her neck. “And now look at us,” he said, keeping his lips in place.

She giggled at the sensation. “You kinda grew on me.”

“Oh I grew on you,” he said, pressing his hard dick against her leg.

She put her hand on his chest. “Hold your horses,” she told him, pushing him away. “I’m meeting Shea and Alex soon. I can’t get all messy.”

He glanced down between her legs. “Not my fault you get all wet,” he joked.

Savannah rolled her eyes at him. “Actually, it is,” she retorted. Suddenly Cash jumped up onto Tyler, keeping him away from Savannah. “Look at that, my hero,” she smiled at the dog.

“Yeah, some hero, cock blocking me,” he muttered.

Savannah laughed while Tyler frowned. “Maybe later tonight,” she told him, and Tyler perked up slightly as he scratched Cash between the ears.

She started to stand up from the couch when Tyler caught her wrist with his hand. She turned her head to look back at him. “You’re going to get this job,” he stated.

“How do you know?” she inquired.

“Because I just do,” he replied, and she looked at him skeptically. “And if you don’t, then we’ll figure it out. Either way, we figure it out together.”

“Stop being so romantic. I’m starting to wonder what happened to my boyfriend,” she joked. But in reality, she was happy he was there for her. She knew she would need him whether she got the promotion or not.
