Diary Of A Puck Bunny

“Tim Riggins Jr.”(Tom Wilson):

I guess the first thing I can say about Tom Wilson will have to be where his nickname came from. Every guy in the league from each team has a nickname and Tom Wilson, #43, a Right-wing for the Washington Capitals nickname is The Whip.

I wasn’t around when he was given the nickname, take in that he is 2 years older than me. Why his nickname is important because it’s how we met.

I don’t know what it is with hockey player and bars or should I ask what’s up with me and bars. But all I remember hearing is some guy across the bar say something along the lines of The Whip and I thought they were saying it to me. I didn’t say anything, just brushed it off. And then the guy next to me walked off to wherever that guy from before yelled.

A few minutes later the guy that left came back and I just said it, “So the name Whip. Where is that from?”

The guy turned to look at me and I thought I was looking at Taylor Kitsch, you know the guy that played Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights (Old Show from 2006 - 11). But no instead it was Tom Wilson.

I’m not saying that like it’s a bad thing, he’s just not what I expected. Tom was a really nice guy. Good sense of humor, was really good looking, could keep me interested in just who he was and played some pretty okay hockey.

For the two months I was in Washington I didn’t really know what I would be getting myself into. One of the preseason games, Washington was playing a game against the Kings. Tom offered to fly me out to Los Angeles for the few days they would be there for the game. At first, I didn’t want to be one of the girls flown out but I can do my work from anywhere.

The day before Tom left he called me and told me he was leaving, I hadn’t made up my mind. I would never have thought when I first started about being flown out to a game just to hook up with guys in the NHL.

I obviously wasn’t on the same plane as Tom or the rest of his team. Sorry, no mile high club for me.

He wanted to pay for my flight and I couldn’t say no. I sat in business class on the flight to Los Angeles. When I got to Los Angeles I texted Tom and he texted me the name of what hotel I was staying at. When I checked in I sent him my room number so he wouldn’t have to track me down.

The next day, Tom had a game so I went to a bar and found a few more me’s (Puck Bunnies). I was what you can call, a “during the season” girl. At every beck and call for a hookup for the duration of the NHL season.

The only real difference between an off season girl and during the season girl is that you go to more parts in the off season. It’s not just bars or clubs but you get to go to their houses and see what that part of their life is like. It came to my attention really early on when I was hooking up with these guys that the totally intense party scene wasn’t for me when it comes to the NHL.

I went back to Washington tired and jet-lagged. I went back to the apartment I was renting and slept for most of that Friday. It was the first thing I did that Friday and later in the day I saw a few texts from Tom. Mostly “When are we meeting up again? I have a game on the…”

That's how it always works in the NHL, your schedule has to revolve around them. By the time it was November I called it quits with Tom, he understood and he was probably already hooking up with some other girl.

That was it. No parting gift, no nothing. But then again most of these guys are small town (mostly) Canadian guys and don’t have it engraved in their drains that having sex with someone means you should give them something else in return.

After I went home and spent some time with my brother, his wife, and my nephew Maksim (Max) I just took a short break from it all. 7 months in Montréal before I found out that Washington went to the playoffs that year and lost to Pittsburgh in round 2 of game 7.

I texted Tom after. He was surprised to hear from me. Telling me he thought that I had dropped off the face of the earth. I never explained to Tom what happened or why I ended it.

So, for now, I guess that’s all I have to say. The next guy, well he’s nothing like the rest. We may have the same beginning but a different middle and end.

Tout Mon Amour, Katherine
