Shots Not Taken
Unwanted
We walked into this pub that had an old wooden bar and a dart board that looked like it was about to fall off the wall and yeah, that was pretty much it. I looked over at Tuukka.
"It's a classic." He shrugged.
I laughed and looked at the other boys who came with us.
"So is this where you guys come to hang out?" I asked.
"Pretty much." One of the guys said.
"Umm." I said trying to remember his name.
"David." He laughed.
"God, I was so close I thought it was Dennis."
"No that's Sieds, he's not here."
"Let me buy you a drink." Tuukka said as he put his arm on my back, pushing me towards the bar.
"What do you want?" He asked.
"Just a beer."
He paid for my first round and I had a few sips before the other boys sat down.
"You're a beer drinker, ey?" I think his name was Brad said.
"Yeah, it's pretty much all we drink in Vancouver."
There was an awkward moment of silence.
"So do you guys want to play darts?" David asked.
"Sure." I said.
"See Tuukka here is killer at darts." Brad said.
"Hmm, we'll see." I smirked.
I must of had three of four more beers as we continued to play.
"I suck." I said and sat down pouting like a five year old.
"You don't suck," Tuukka laughed, "come here."
I went to the line and held the dart in my hand. Tuukka put his hand on the back of mine and spoke,
"The key is to look higher than you aim." He whispered in my ear.
I threw it and it bounced off the top of the dart board.
"I can't do this." I said laughing.
"I just think you're too drunk."
"Not as drunk as Brad over there." I pointed to him.
He was singing kareoke to these girls that were sitting at the end of the bar. I turned to face Tuukka and we were really close.
"Now he is drunk."
Tuukka pushed his head towards mine and I turned my head knowing what he was trying to do.
"Sorry." He said.
I shook my head.
"I gotta go, I really shouldn't have even come here in the first place." I said grabbing my purse and phone from on top of the bar.
"Elia. Wait." I heard him say.
I ignored him and walked out into what was now rain. It was dark, how long had I been there? I started walking when my foot got caught in something. The heel of my shoe got caught in a manhole cover.
"You have got to be kidding me," I mumbled.
The rain had been coming down harder and harder now. I just wanted to get back to the hotel. I pulled my foot and snapped the heel off.
"Shit." I said and waved for a taxi.
I got into the taxi and told him where to go. When I finally got back, I let out a sigh of relief. I was starving. I hadn't eaten all day. I looked at the clock and it was 8:30. How the hell did I stay at the pub for four and a half hours and not even notice it? I called for room service to bring me something, what ever. I ended up having some chicken and rice. It wasn't long after that that I fell asleep. I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. My head was pounding. I grabbed my purse and answered it.
"Hello?" I said.
"Elia! Thank god!"
"Who is this?"
"It's Tuukka, we swapped phones last night. You must have grabbed mine when you left."
"Shit." I said.
"I can swing by your hotel and we can switch them back."
"Yeah that's fine."
I didn't really want him to come to my hotel but whatever. We had the same phone and the same ring tone which I found to be quite ironic. I sighed.
"Of course we switched phones." I mumbled to myself.
I had a bagel while I packed up my clothes. About twenty minutes later there was a knock on my door. I walked over and looked through the hole and Tuukka was standing there. I took a breath in and swung it open.
"Hey." He said.
"Hey."
We awkwardly exchanged phones.
"How did you know what hotel I was at? And how did you know what room I was in?" I questioned.
"They always send people here and I just asked what room you were in."
I let out a sarcastic laugh.
"Quite the security they have, ey?"
"I'm really sorry about last night." He said.
"It's fine, we were both drunk. It happens."
I saw him look past my shoulder.
"You're leaving?" He asked with a worried look on his face.
What did he care?
"Um yeah. I'm going back to Vancouver to get my things."
"Oh, okay. Well I'll see you when you get back. Thanks for my phone."
"Yup."
I waved goodbye and shut the door.
"What the fuck?" I asked myself.
I finished packing my things and headed to the airport. My flight wasn't for another half hour so I decided to look over the paperwork that Scott had given me about the boys. The first on the stack was Tuukka. I rolled my eyes and put him at the bottom of the list. I went through trying to match faces with names. My flight was called and I boarded. I slept through pretty much the whole ride. This flight went straight to Vancouver so I didn't have to make any stops. I thought a lot about the past two days and how Tuukka tried to kiss me. We had only met that day, why would he think that was okay? It bugged me a lot. I got home and slept some more. Jet lag was always the worst. I woke up in the morning feeling refreshed, which was weird. I figured I'd take a run down to the coffee shop and tell them. I ran through the doors and saw Charolette's smiling face.
"Did you get it, did you get it?" She asked looking at me like a small child on Christmas morning.
I nodded my head and jumped up and down in excitement.
"I knew you would!" She said and hugged me.
I ran in the back and found Angie.
"Hey! You're back! Is that bad news or good news?" She said.
"It's good news! I just came to put in my two week notice!"
"Aww chicky! That's great! We're gonna miss you so much!" She hugged me.
"So when do you want me to work?" I asked.
"You still have vacation days right?"
"Yeah."
"How about you just take a weeks vacation and then use your sick days and just keep it on the D.L."
"Okay, are you sure?" I laughed.
"Yeah. I'm proud of you!"
I left the coffee shop and went back home to start packing. The next week consisted of me packing up boxes and shipping them off to Scott's house. Since he didn't have an apartment for me yet he let me ship some boxes there. A few days later I was watching a movie when my phone vibrate. I looked down and I had a text from Tuukka. Tuukka? Did I read that right? I opened it and it read.
"Hey I stole your number when we swapped phones and put mine in, hope you don't mind. The guys and I were just wondering when you were getting back."
I stood confused. Why did they all want me back there so badly. It's not like I'm some mega hot babe or anything. I thought for a moment, then wrote back,
"Scott hasn't called me to tell me everything was all set yet. I'll let you know."
I put my phone down and just a second later it vibrated again.
"Ugh, what?" I yelled.
It was my mom calling.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Elia." She said her voice shaking.
"Mom? What's the matter?"
"It's Judy."
"Judy? What about her."
"She died this morning."
"It's a classic." He shrugged.
I laughed and looked at the other boys who came with us.
