Family Secrets

Chapter 1

Bridgette was unceremoniously woken up on the morning of November fifth.

“What the fuck Ally,” she groaned as she pulled the now sopping wet sheets away from her body.

“You told me to wake you up by any means necessary and I always wanted to throw water on someone while they were sleeping so…” Allison Hart, her roommate since freshman year, shrugged as if the whole thing was no big deal. “So, get up sleepyhead! You have to take a midterm in about an hour and I don’t think you’re teacher would appreciate you showing up in just your underwear and one of Charlie’s t-shirts.”

“You sure about that?” Bridgette asked seriously as she began looking around their bedroom for her shower stuff.

“Pretty positive Dr. Reid would have a heart attack if he saw you dressed like that,” Ally commented as she sat down at her desk to do her makeup. “Your towel is hanging up in your closet by the way.” Bridgette mentally slapped herself for not remembering her inclinations from the night before to attempt to clean up her side of the room; probably because she didn’t get much done as ninety percent of her wardrobe was still thrown haphazardly across the floor and around her bed.

“If he had a heart attack would that get us out of the exam?” Bridgette only half seriously questioned. Ally, who turned around in her chair, let a pensive look drape over her face.

“On second thought,” she answered after a moment’s thought. “Stay the way you are. I am in no way shape or form ready for this goddamn test.” Bridgette laughed as she slipped Charlie’s t-shirt off and pulled her bathrobe on over her body.

“Sorry, pretty sure Charlie would murder me if I let another man see me dressed like that—no matter how young or old he is.”

“Well Charlie can just go jump off a cliff for all I care, I don’t want to have to take this test. So, stay naked!”

“Yeah, I’ll tell him that you said that,” Bridgette laughed as she walked out of her room and into her apartment’s bathroom.

Charlie McAvoy was Bridgette’s boyfriend of just shy of a year. The two had met when she was a freshman and he was a sophomore after both had enrolled in the same calculus course. Bridgette was completely hopeless when it came to any kind of math and Charlie had offered to tutor her. The two became fast friends and remained so even after he decided to leave Boston University and join the NHL as a defenseman for the Boston Bruins. About a month into the 2017-2018 season, Charlie asked her out and four dates later they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend.
“Hey, I’m gonna head to Dunks, do you want anything?” Ally questioned when Bridgette came back into the room after her shower. Even though she had been living in Boston for three years now, it still sometimes took her a minute to figure out the local slang.

“Dunkin’ Donuts? You know, the place with really good coffee?” Ally slowly said, mocking the clueless look that was most likely present on Bridgette’s face.

“Oh, yeah, sorry. I guess I’m still half asleep. And yeah, my usual please,” Bridgette recovered.

“You got it!” Ally exclaimed as she started to put her coat on. “Also,” she continued. “Some guy named Kris called you and then texted you to call him back. Who’s Kris?” Bridgette’s eyes went wide at the statement and quickly ran over to her bedside to grab her phone.

“Just, just a friend. Don’t worry about it.” Ally looked at her suspiciously.

“You’re not cheating on Charlie right? Cuz if you were, that wouldn’t be cool. I like Charlie, he’s a good guy.”

“No!” Bridgette exclaimed. “God no, I am not cheating on him! Kris, Kris is just a family friend who is married with two kids.” Her godchildren, but Bridgette left that part out.

“Oh, good. Well, I’ll be back in a bit with your coffee. Do you want any food to go with it?” After telling her that she was good with just a coffee, Ally waltzed out of the room, causing Bridgette to laugh slightly before sighing in relief. It was not that she didn’t want people to know about Kris per say, she just did not like the questions that always followed when their relationship was brought up.

Keeping her relationship to one of the biggest names on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster had been a fairly easy feat since she arrived in Boston as a freshman. No one in the city particularly cared for the team and she was smart enough to know not to wear any of the Pens gear Kris had so generously over-supplied her with throughout the years. Even Charlie never picked up on the fact that she was technically related to his former idol turned rival; which, if she was being honest semi-surprised her because she did not do the best of job acting discrete about what she was doing and why she could never hang out with Charlie whenever Kris was in town.

“Bonjour,” Charlotte answered in her native language as Kris picked up the phone. “Vous avez appelé? Hello. You called?

“Oui,” Kris’s deep voice answered back. “Alex avait quelque chose qu’il avait besoin de vous dire.” Yes, Alex had something that he needed to tell you. There was a moment of silence as she guessed Kris was transferring his cell phone to his only son.

“Bee! Bee!” The five year old’s voice suddenly exclaimed on the phone.

“Alex, mon amour!” Bridgette exclaimed at the sound of her godson’s voice. Comment vas-tu? Te me manques!” Alex, my love! How are you? I miss you!
“Ma dent est partie!”My tooth is gone!Alex shouted into the phone in a tone that told Bridgette he was obviously pleased with himself.

“Votre dent est partie?” Bridgette questioned, pretending to be in shock that a tooth could just suddenly disappear. “Où est-il allé?” Your tooth is gone? Where did it go?

“The tooth fairy has it,” the little voice laughed, switching over to English. It had always amazed Bridgette how easily Alex picked up on the American language; for her, it was one of the hardest things she ever had to learn. Not that anyone would know that though because she now spoke the language so well that it was near impossible to pick up her slight French accent.

“She does? Did she give you anything for it?”

“Oui.” Bridgette let out a laugh at how pleased he sounded over the phone. “Elle m’a donné cinq dollars.” She gave me five dollars.

“Cinq dollars!” Bridgette exclaimed. “Wow! Petit homme chanceux!” Wow, you lucky little man.Bridgette’s smile widened when she heard his little laugh on the other end of the phone followed by the mumbled voice of Kris, who was obviously telling Alex to say something to her.

Bee, Papa dit que je dois aller prende mon petit déjeuner,” His little voice said into the phone. Papa says I have to go eat breakfast.

“Oui, écoute ton père Alex. Je te parlerai plus tard,” Bridgette replied. “Je t’aime petit homme.” Yes, listen to your dad Alex. I will talk to you later. I love you little man.

“Je t’aime Bee! Au revoir!” I love you Bee! Goodbye!

“Il ne pouvait pas attendre pour vous appeler de sa dent manquante,” Kris’s voice came back onto the line. He could not wait to call you and tell you about his missing tooth.

“Ah, il me manqué tellement,” Bridgette sighed. I miss him so much.

“Ton idée était d’aller à l’école à Boston,” Kris mused. Going to school in Boston was your idea.

“Je sais, je sais. Vous me manquez juste les gars parfois.” I know, I know. I just miss you guys sometimes.

“Parfois?” Kris asked with a laugh.

“Alex, Tori et Cath me manquent tout le temps,” Bridgette said, pretending to be completely serious. “Vous juste un jour.” Well, I miss Alex, Tori, and Cath all the time. You just sometimes.

“You hurt me,” Kris whined, switching over to English.

“How is everyone?” Bridgette conversed as she began digging around her floor looking for a clean shirt to wear.

“Bien, bien,” Kris answered. “Victoria is growing so much and well, Alex started losing his teeth.”

“Ugh, I miss them,” Bridgette stated, putting Kris on speaker phone.

“We all miss you Bee. You still planning on coming to Pittsburgh for Thanksgiving?”

“That’s the plan,” she affirmed as she started to lightly put on some mascara. “Though, you do know that you play Boston in Boston the day after right?”

“Oui, but I know Cath wants a partner for Black Friday shopping and where would we stay if we all came to see you?” Kris pointed out. This wasn’t the first time that they had had this conversation. Since the NHL schedule was released, Bridgette had been trying to convince the Letang family to come visit her in Boston instead of vice versa because Charlie had wanted her to spend the holiday with him and his family, who were coming down for the week.

“She could shop here,” Bridgette pointed out.

“Why am I getting the vibe that you don’t want to come to Pittsburgh? Usually your chomping at the bit to come visit yours truly; what’s keeping you in Boston?” Kris mused, his tone light and joking but Bridgette knew better; he was being completely serious.

“I just think that you all would like Boston this time of the year, that’s all,” Bridgette lied. Kris did not know about Charlie and for the time being, Bridgette wanted to keep it that way. It was not that she didn’t like Charlie enough to introduce him to the people who were her family; she was just petrified at Kris’s reaction. As embarrassed as she was to admit, Charlie McAvoy was her first real boyfriend mostly due to the fact that back in Montreal, everyone knew Kris and his reputation tended to scare off any boy gutsy enough to go after his ‘little sister’. And while she didn’t think Kris would scare off Charlie per say, she knew that their relationship would most likely change the second Kris was brought into the equation.

“Yeah, and pigs fly. But, peu importe,” All the way back in Pittsburgh, Kris knew Bridgette well enough that he was not going to get a straight answer out of her and while the fact that she was keeping secrets from him bothered him, he knew that she would tell him in due time—she always did.

After talking for another fifteen minutes about school and what else was going on in both of their lives, Bridgette decided to cut the conversation short when she heard Ally’s loud voice coming from down the hall.

“Eh bien, je te parlerai plus tard,” Kris said. “Bonne chance pour ton test.” Well, I will talk to you later. Good luck on your test.

“Merci Kris. Bonne chance dans votre jeu ce soir,” Bridgette replied back just as Ally started opening the door. Thanks Kris. Good luck in your game tonight.

“Je t’aime petite soeur.” I love you little sister.

“Je t’aime Kris.” Bridgette replied back just as Ally walked in announcing, “I come bearing coffee!”

Laughing at her friend’s obnoxiousness, Bridgette hung up the phone and turned her attention towards her friend, who was now waving the two cups of iced coffee in her hand around.

“Geez, Al, don’t spill it!” She exclaimed as she got up to rescue her cup.

“Yeah, yeah,” Ally waved off. “Hey, did I hear you speaking French? Before on the phone?” Bridgette simply nodded, hoping her roommate didn’t make a big deal about it.

“Huh, I didn’t know you could speak French,” was all that she said in return. Bridgette just shrugged as she continued to get ready for the day.

Notes

New story! This idea has been circulating in my head for a long time now and I am wicked excited to finally put thoughts to words. Hopefully you all will like it. Any feedback, good or bad, is extremely welcomed. Also, very sorry if the French is incorrect; I do not speak the language myself and Google Translate is only so accurate. Thanks for reading :)
