Falling Fast and Breathing Hard

Perfect Day

Another two months passed till I decided I was ready to start planning Kris and I's wedding. It's also July and he's back home in Montreal, beginning his training. It's weird, you know? Last year, this time, we were dating and I didn't realize it at the time that I was even pregnant. It wasn't a huge deal last year, but now, we have a four month old daughter together. It's hard, seeing as he's gonna start coming home on weekends, while during the week, I just started to juggle raising Kalea and working at home. Luckily for me, I am able to do that, which is a relief, but still tough at the same time. Today, I'm picking my mom and Karen up at the airport, so we can meet up with Mary and Vero to go try on wedding gowns. When I finally told my mom about planning the wedding now, she pretty much screamed in my ear; I'm still surprised I have my hearing, actually. The second my mom saw me, she wrapped her arms around me.

"I missed you so much!"

"I missed you too, Mom." I said with a laugh.

Then, I got a huge hug from Karen when she pulled away.

"I missed you, honey."

"I missed you, too."

I looked over to my mom who had kneeled down and was talking to Kalea.

"How is my granddaughter?"

"Absolutely wonderful. She really misses her Daddy though."

"Aww... do you miss your Daddy, Kalea?"

She cooed.

"Are you happy me and Karen are here?"

She giggled.

"I swear, she couldn't be more precious."

"Tell me about it. I just can't imagine how she's gonna be when I start trying dresses on."

"I can't either."

About ten minutes later, we were on our way to the dress shop. We met Vero and Mary in the parking lot.

"Ready, the future Mrs. Athena Letang?" Vero asked.

I blushed and smiled.

"Yeah... I'm ready."

The shop has some of the most beautiful and expensive dresses I've ever seen. To say I was in awe, would be an understatement. I never thought I'd be in a place like this; I've never been one to spend a lot of money when I didn't even need to.

"These dresses are gorgeous." my mom gasped.

I went over to the desk and gave the receptionist my name while my friends and family waited for me to come out in different gowns.

"I saw that little girl out there. Is she your daughter?" the female consultant asked.

"Yes. She is. Her name is Kalea."

"Such a pretty name. How old is she?"

"Four months."

"Well, she's precious."

"Thank you." I said, smiling.

The first dress I tried on was just too simple, the next was too fancy. Once I tried on nine, I was losing hope; I wanted to pick out a dress and I loved this shop. Why couldn't I just find one here I liked? Then, came dress number ten. I fell in love with it instantly. When I tried it on... well, that's a hard thing to describe. I was in tears once it was on.

"This is absolutely breathtaking." I said, putting my hand up to my mouth.

I walked out to where everybody was and stood in front of them.

"So, what do you think?"

Everybody seemed to still be taking it in.

"It's beautiful, Athena." Karen said.

"It's perfect. You look breathtaking." my mom said, getting choked up.

"Oh Mom... please stop."

She just laughed.

"You know I can't."

I laughed and shook my head.

"Vero? Mary?"

"Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous." Vero said.

"Amazing. Absolutely amazing."

"What does my girl think?"

She giggled and smiled.

I got teary again. I looked at myself in the mirror again and smiled. This is the one.

"Sounds like it's the one." the consultant said.

"It is. It's the one."

Everyone cheered and came up to hug me.

"I can't believe I found it already!" I exclaimed as we walked out the front door.

"I think I can." my mom said.

I figured when it was time for me to bring home my dress, I would store it at Mary's, so Kris'll never catch a peek of it. I knew it'd be a long time till I was due to wear it, but I know that it will certainly be worth the wait. After a nice lunch, we went shopping before heading back to Kris and I's house where I made dinner and dessert from scratch. I talked to him briefly... very briefly, actually. I talked to him for maybe two minutes during lunch. I let him talk to Kalea for a minute and when we talked, we didn't talk about much at all. So, when my mom and Karen head to bed, I'm gonna give Kris a call.

"How is everything?" I asked.

I had made crab cakes, fried jumbo shrimp and tomato bisque. Everybody had looks of pleasure on their faces.

"Delicious. You cook just like your mother." Karen said.

"Really?"

"I wouldn't lie."

"She's right. You're just as great a cook as I am."

"Just wait till dessert."

What was dessert, you ask?

"Deep dark chocolate cheesecake. OMG!" Mary said.

"Votre dessert préféré! C'est merveilleux!"

I laughed.

"What did you say?"

"I said, 'Your favorite dessert! It's heavenly!'"

Everyone laughed.

"You can say that again." my mom said.

"Mmhmm..." Karen said.

I smiled.

Come 10 o'clock, Vero and Mary left while my mom and Karen headed to bed. I stayed up and called Kris before we both headed to bed; he'd be arriving at the airport around ten and I wanted to talk to him before then.

"Hi, baby." he said.

"Hi, Kris. What's up?"

"Not much. I just had a long day and missed you guys. How about you?"

"I had the most wonderful day. I went out with Mary, Vero, my mom and Karen to go shopping..." I said, drifting off.

"Why are you drifting off?"

"I'm just so happy."

"From shopping?" he asked, laughing.

"I went shopping for something I'm gonna wear next summer."

The smile on my face was ever apparent. I just wished he could see it.

"Oh... I get what you're saying. Did you find the one?"

"Maybe..."

He laughed.

"I'm gonna take that as a yes."

I laughed.

"I just wanna see you already." he said.

"Less than 12 hours from now."

"Yeah... what else did you do today?"

"Regular shopping, went to lunch and made everybody dinner and dessert."

"You did, did ya?"

"Yes. I did."

"You sound so adorable, you know that?"

I giggled.

"Je'taime." I said.

"Je'taime aussi."

The following morning, I was awake and ready to pick up Kris.

"Are you excited to see Daddy?" I asked Kalea.

She smiled.

"So am I!"

She giggled at that.

Right before I left, I heard footsteps.

"Good morning, Athena." my mom said.

"Good morning, Mom. Did ya sleep good?"

"I slept great. You?"

"Great and I'm about to leave to pick up Kris. Any chance you and Karen wanna come?"

"Honey, that would take us quite a while to get ready. Besides, I know how badly you wanna see him and you see him only on the weekends. Go. Go see your man!"

I laughed and hugged her.

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you, too and I love you, too, Kalea."

Then, off I went with Kalea to go to the airport. It was busy in the morning seeing as it was the weekend, but I didn't care. We were as close to the terminal as we were allowed. I stood there with her in her stroller for about ten minutes when Kris came walking through. I didn't even have to wave; he saw us right away and walked toward us.

"My girls." he said with a huge smile.

"Our man."

He wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed me... really kissed me, which I desperately needed and I kissed him just as he was kissing me.

"I love you." he said.

"I love you, too."

We stood in this embrace for a couple of minutes.

"I really did miss you." he said.

"I really missed you too."

He then turned and kneeled down to see Kalea who was reaching for him.

"You wanna see Daddy?" he asked.

She giggled and kept reaching for him.

"I got you!" he said, picking her up and kissing her cheek.

She kept smiling.

"I love you."

She cooed and touched his face.

"Do you wanna go out for breakfast?" I asked.

"I'd love to, but your mom and Karen wouldn't mind?"

"Of course not. I did ask my mom about coming with us and well... besides saying it'd take them a while to get there, she said to go see my man." I said, laughing.

He laughed as well.

"Your mom is awesome."

I smiled and buried my head into his shoulder.

"Let's go." I said.

He nodded and pushed her stroller.

As I was in the mood for pancakes, we headed to IHOP. I sat Kalea beside Kris in her highchair before sitting on the other side of the booth.

"I just wanna ask this." I said.

"What is it?"

"What month do you wanna get married next summer? June? July? August?"

"Well, I was thinking about June. I just wanna be married to you as soon as I can next summer."

"I was thinking the same. I can't stand not being married to you."

He smiled and leaned over the table.

"I love you."

"I love you, too, Beautiful."
