The Game of Love

The Godfather

“So I heard you had a date with Sidney.” I looked up to see Max standing in front of me, all the guys pouring into the locker room behind him.

I rubbed my eye tiredly. “What are you talking about?”

“Everyone’s talking about how he came over and you guys had a date,” he explained taking a seat next to me and taking off his shoulder pads.

I shook my head. “No, it was not a date. It was dinner.” I paused for a moment before speaking again. “And who told you we had dinner?”

Max shrugged beginning to untie his skates. “Everyone’s talking about it.”

I cast a glance at all the guys chatting or laughing about something before lowering my voice. “And who did they hear it from?”

“Well, I think Tyler told me that Flower and him were talking and that he mentioned it.”

I sighed. “And does everyone know about it?”

He nodded slowly. “Yeah, everyone was giving Sidney a pretty hard time about it. They kept making jokes. But he just laughed,” he explained.

“Oh.” I began to think if Kris had heard anything yet and wondered what he’d say. I got up. “Excuse me. I have to go do something.” I took a few steps before seeing Kris staring at me with a blank expression.

He adjusted the cap on his head. “Hey Brooke.”

“Hey Kris,” I slowly waved and put my hands in my back pocket.

“So everyone’s saying how you and Sidney went on a date,” he began putting things into his bag.

I let out a small laugh. “Yeah, that’s just some big misunderstanding. It wasn’t like that at all.”

He glanced at me before looking back down. “Really?”

I nodded. “Yeah. He and Marc came over last night to return my phone and I was making dinner for Peyton when she cancelled and I offered them, but Marc said he had to go and basically forced Sidney to stay and eat. I guess he was just too nice to say no.”

A smile tugged on his lips for a second. “That does sound like him.”

I nodded my head. “Yeah.” I looked at him for a moment before asking, “So how are you?”

Kris seemed confused at first but soon understood what I meant by the question. “I’m okay. Uh, I think we should maybe talk later.”

I sighed. “Yeah, I think we should.” I checked my phone and glanced at him. “You want to come over my place at around 7?”

He nodded. “Yeah, okay. Well I’m gonna go shower, so I’ll see you later?” he walked away.

“Hey Brooke!”

I turned around to see a smiling Marc. “Hey Marc.” I forced a smile onto my face.

“What’s up?”

I didn’t want to accuse him since I hadn’t known him very well, but I couldn’t help it. “Oh, nothing. Heard any good gossip lately? Max just happened to tell me a very interesting rumor,” I said crossing my arms.

His smiled faded as he adjusted his cap nervously. “I’m sorry. I didn’t try to make it seem that way,” he reasoned.

I shook my head. “What did Sidney say about all this?”

“Oh, he didn’t seem to mind it too much.” A smirk was growing its way onto his face.

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

He shrugged. “I mean he didn’t try to deny the fact that I said you two were on a date.”

“We were finally acting normal around each other and now I guess he’ll probably get all awkward again.” I shrugged.

“I doubt it,” he tried to reassure me. “Hey some of us were going to go out for lunch, you and Peyton want to come?”

“Oh, I wouldn’t want to intrude.”

“No, really. It’s fine. We’ll all just get changed and head out.” He waited for no response as he disappeared behind the showers.
------------------------------------------------------------------
“Okay, so we’ll go order and you and Sid can go get a table,” Max explained.

I frowned. “What about everyone else?”

“They’re ordering.”

I furrowed my brows. “Well aren’t Sidney and I going to order?”

Max shrugged. “You can order when we get back. Stop nagging,” he gave me a face.

I turned to Sidney. “I don’t know how you deal with him everyday.”

He let out a small laugh. “It’s okay. It’s not that bad once you get used to it.”

We walked over to a large table in the café and took seats across from each other. “Brooke! You can come order I already got Sidney his food,” Marc explained.

I came back minutes later with a sandwich, iced tea, two slices of cake, a muffin and a banana. Sidney looked at me in shock. “Are you planning on eating all that?”

I grinned. “Oh, yes. Every last bite.”

He shook his head slightly. “You have some dedication to food.”

I could only smile.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Okay, me and Marc will go get the snacks. Peyton can you help us carry the stuff?” asked Max as we were purchasing the tickets.

She nodded. “Yeah and Sidney and Brooke can go save seats since the movie is about to start.”

I shook my head turning to look at Sidney. “Why is that we always get stuck with the seats?”

He let out a small chuckle. “Come on, we should go before the seats fill up.”

“Well it’s a Tuesday afternoon. I don’t think many seats will be taken.” I assured.

Once we walked in, we took seats in the middle section when two parents and their little son walked in wearing a number 87 jersey. He gave Sidney a big toothless grin.

He looked at me. “Sorry. I have to go say hi,” he excused himself and went up to the boy and his family. He greeted his parents kindly and squatted down to sign the little boy’s jersey. After signing it, the boy threw his arms around Sidney’s neck before leaving.

He came back and sat down as I stared at him, smiling. “How do you do it?”

“Do what?” he tilted his head a bit.

“Do that. You’re so great to all of your fans and you never once complain and you’re always so considerate to them,” I explained.

He shrugged, “Well they’ve been really great. It’s the least I can do. I don’t mind it. I’m just glad they care about me at all. The fact that I’m a role model to someone even if it’s a little boy is just amazing. I am grateful to them for all that.”

I raised my eyebrows at him shaking my head. “You are some kind of guy, Sidney.”

He gave me a slight smirk. “I try.”

I stared at him, surprised by the sly smirk he gave but eventually laughed. He joined in when everyone else came in. “What’s so funny?” Max asked.

“Oh, nothing,” I assured him.

“Fine. Don’t tell me,” he replied taking a seat next to me. “I didn’t want to know anyway.”

Just as I opened my mouth to say something the movie began and I shifted in my seat. I put my hand on the armrest to my right. After a moment or so, his put his hand too, no knowing mine was there. I jumped slightly and removed my hand. “I’m sorry,” I said quickly. I suddenly felt my face warm up.

He shook his head. “No. It was my fault.” He took his hand out and placed it on his leg.

I folded my hands and looked at the screen. For the entire movie I tried to focus on not making any other movement close to him. But every few minutes I would tear my eyes away from the movie and looked at Sidney’s hand on his leg as he bounced it up and down.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
“That was the worst movie I’ve ever seen!” Max whined as we were walking out of the theater.

I rolled my eyes. “Well I wouldn’t know because you kept talking through the whole thing.”

He shrugged. “There was nothing else to do.”

“There was an entire movie going on!” I yelled throwing my hands in the air.

Sidney chuckled, catching my attention. “Max just likes to talk a lot, even when no one wants him to.”

We all laughed while Max pouted. I looked back to my right only to notice Sidney wasn’t there. I looked back at Max who nodded behind me. I turned around to see him greeting and signing things for a few guys. “Of course.” I muttered.

“He’s a good guy isn’t he?” Marc asked behind me.

I nodded. “Yeah. I have no idea how he doesn’t go crazy.”

He stepped in front of me. “He’s a special kind of guy, that Sidney.”

I nodded again. “He sure is.”

“Okay, look. He’d kill me if he knew I said this, but I think he likes you,” he sighed.

“What is with you and Max that you’re constantly pushing me with him,” I shook my head.

Marc shrugged. “It’s just, we do think he likes you. He’s not exactly the most open person, but he has spoken to you a lot while you’ve been together. That’s something big for him, letting down those walls of his. He doesn’t do it often.”

I let out a breath. “It’s probably just because we talk about stupid stuff, so I guess he doesn’t feel as shy or uncomfortable.”

He nodded. “Yes, but it's with you who he feels more comfortable with. Look, I’ve known the guy for a few years now and we’re real close but he doesn’t even talk to me the way he talks to you,” he explained looking over his shoulder and seeing Sidney come back talking to Max.

He moved us a few steps away from them.

He lowered his voice before continuing. “And, me and Max have seen the way he looks at you when you’re not looking. When you’re taking with someone else, he just smiles at you and keeps staring.”

I gave my head a shake. “Okay, you guys are way in over your head. You’re ridiculous for thinking that he has any sort of feelings for me.”

“Maybe. But Max and me aren’t the only ones who see it. The other guys think you might have a thing for him too. You’re always giggly and laughing when you’re with him.”

I crossed my arms. “You guys are out of your mind.”

He smirked. “I just think you’d be real cute together.”

Max appeared beside Marc. “I know right! Wait, who are we talking about?” he asked making a face.

“Sidney and Brooke,” Marc replied.

A grin grew on his face. “Oh yes. You would be. You’re kids would be so cute. I call godfather!” he yelled raising his hand.

“Oh!” Marc interrupted. “I already have the perfect wedding gift for you guys.

“Can I get in on that I couldn’t think of anything,” he said nudging Marc. They started to argue and I could feel the other guys’ eyes on us.

“Stop! I am not getting married nor am I pregnant!” I yelled, causing everyone to look at me. I ignored the looks and lowered my voice. “Max you are not going to be godfather.”

“Fine!” he yelled and stormed off. "But I could be like the Godfather to all godfather's!" he cried.

Marc shook his head laughing. “Oh, Max. But you see what happened right now? Sidney looked over here and couldn’t help but smile in your direction. And he hasn’t stopped either.”

I furrowed my brows and looked over in Sidney’s direction. I caught his eye quickly shift over to Jordan who was rambling about something. I turned my attention back to Marc.

“Just something to think about,” he shrugged walking away.

I looked back over at Sidney. He was incredibly nice and didn’t make as nervous as I would normally be around someone of his popularity, or anyone really. He was sweet. I could definitely tell there was more to him than what he showed in interviews. There was more to the respectful, serious, put together hockey player than everyone saw on television.

And there was something I felt when I was around him or when he made me laugh. I couldn’t exactly tell what I felt for him. And I’m not sure I wanted to find out.

Notes

In honor of his birthday. Maybe I'll post another later today?

I don't see the readers or comment numbers going up.

You guys need to work on that. Didn't your mother ever tell you to say nice things to people?

I have so much to say.. and I know you like to read our comments so brace yourself :D.. First of all I'm not a huge fan of hockey fanfiction because I read a few others and they never make the character like the actual player, for example the things they say or the way they behave and sometimes they try so hard to make it seem as similar as possible that they exaggerate it. But after reading your story I couldn't stop reading. I hope you update soon. I do have an opinion on who she should end up with. I absolutely love Sidney as a player and a person, but I wish she would end up with Tanger, I mean everyone expects her to end up with Sid because he's so sweet and nice and almost perfect. I wish this story would be the one with a plot twist, something that no one expected. I hope she would either end up with Letang or maybe date Sid and then they break up and they're both heartbroken but he finds somebody else and she's happy that he's happy.. Oh God, I sound like I hate love stories but I don't. I'm just bored with predictable love stories. Anyways, I hope the fans from Team Sid are not upset :)
