Chapter 19: Surgery
*The Next Day*
All the guys were up and at Kaners' and Jons' house friday morning at 4, Patrick woke his sisters up and let them get ready and then woke up Christian. He was really tired, so he just brushed his teeth and went to the hospital in his PJ's. The team followed behind Kaner in their own cars. Once they got there, they got Christian checked into a room and he actually fell asleep. Patrick, Gina, Jackie, Jessica, and Erica were in the hospital room with Christian waiting for him to go into the surgery. Just then the doctor walked in.
"Hello Kane family. I'm glad to see that you made the correct decision for your little brother. Now I just want to go over some basic information about what we'll be doing. The whole surgery should be a total of 4 hours. If anything seems off, or anything goes wrong we will immediately inform you, it is highly unlikely anything will go wrong. So, what we are going to do is cut right about his left pec, then we are going to insert a pace maker, and a defibrillator. What those are going to do it, the pacemaker will keep his heart at a nice steady beat and keep it from speeding up and slowing down. The defibrillator is a back up machine that will shock the heart if the pacemaker can't stop it from racing. He will be in quite a bit of pain and he'll be very tired , just let him take it slowly. I don't want him going and doing sports or any vigorous activity for the next month or so. He will be in a sling for a while as well. Other than that, that's basically all that will be happening. Is there any questions?" The doctor stated
*During the Surgery*
Everyone shook their heads no and said bye to Christian as they wheeled him away. Everyone kept seeing doctors and surgeons walk in and out of Christians' OR (Operating room), they were scared that something was going wrong. They were all waiting around, and it came up to 4 and a half hours of him being in surgery. They were worried and scared that something happened, Patrick went to go ask a nurse, but right then the doctor came out of the OR and walked over to everyone as they all stood up.
*After the surgery*
The doctor took off his gloves and looked at everyone, "The surgery went just as planned. We got the Pacemaker and Defibrillator in without any problems. His heart rate is steady right now, and should be permanently. He is asleep right now because of the anesthetics, but once he is awake we want to get him up and moving around as soon as possible. You can all go walk in and see him, but once he's awake we'd like it to be around 2-3 people in the room at once. Thank you again and if you need anything, just ask." The doctor walked away.
"Patrick, Jackie, Jessica, and Erica you guys wanna go first?" Jon asked
They all nodded their heads yes and walked in holding each others hands.
"Patrick, do you think he'll be ok?" Erica said looking up at her older brother
Patrick hugged her and said, "The doctors fixed him. He will be 100% once he isn't in pain anymore from the surgery."
"Patty. I'm sorry I didn't want to go through with the surgery. I am glad we did though." Jackie said as she started to cry
"Don't cry. I would never be mad at you, I may disagree, but never get mad at you." Pat said.
They sat with Christian waiting for him to wake up, Jessica, Erica and Jackie fell asleep on the couches, while Patrick fell asleep next to his brothers bed. They all heard someone move or get up and they saw that it was Christian .
"Hey bud! How you feeling?" Pat said sitting up
Christian sat up and said, "I'm in pain. Can I get pain pills or something?"
Patrick got up to go get the doctor. His sisters sat and talked with him until they got a text from a friend, and had to leave.
Patrick walked back into the room and Christian was talking with his cousins, "The doctor wants to have you walk around and make sure you're ok to do that. So wanna go down the the lunch room and get food?" His brother offered
"Will you help me put my sweat shirt on first?" Christian asked sitting up.
Patrick got his brothers sweatshirt on for him and helped him out of the bed.
"Hey Christian, it was good seeing you and we're glad you're ok, but we gotta get home. If you need anything Pat let us know." Kevin said.
Christian looked hurt by that, but he said bye to his cousins and went to get food.
All the guys were outside Christians' room and when they saw him come out they were relieved to see him up and walking around.
"Christian! We're so happy to see you!" A few of them yelled
Christian smiled, "Thanks. I'm happy to see you guys too."
"I'm taking him down to get food. You guys wanna come with?" Patrick asked his teammates
They all agreed to go with and talk with Christian.
"So bud, how you feeling?" Jon asked putting an arm around Christian
"Tired, and my arm and chest are really sore." He said and Jon removed his arm form Christian
"Sorry." Jon said
Shaw and Sharp got a table for all them to sit at.
"Christian what would you like to eat?" His brother asked
"Can I just have something small? Anythings fine. I'm just not really hungry." Christian said
"How about pizza?" Pat asked and his brother nodded his head and went to get the pizza.
"So..... When do we get to see the scar?" Shaw asked Christian
"I don't know. I just want my pain meds." Christian said
"You need to eat some food first little man." Sharp said, just as he said that Patrick walked over with his food.
"Kaner. Your bro wants pain meds." Shaw told him
"I know he needs to eat first." He said rubbing his brothers head.
Christian was too tired to care or yell at his brother. Once he finished his Pizza and finished talking with the guys they went up to his room and the doctor gave him pain meds. The doctor wanted to keep him for a night and make sure that everything was ok, then let him go home the next day if everything seemed alright.
That night Patrick and Gina spent the night at the hospital with Christian. He was woken up every hour or so to get checked on and to give him pain meds. He got no sleep what so ever. His brother woke up the next morning at 8 and saw Christian asleep, little did he know Christian got no sleep. He saw the bags under his eyes and decided to let him sleep. He walked over to the doctor and asked if Christian would be able to come home today, They agreed to let him go home.
Patrick got all the paperwork signed and filled out. The doctors unhooked him from all the machines and woke him up.
