Journey To The Cup

106th Overall, Monica Tocchet

Monica

"And the Philadelphia Flyer's are proud to select 106th overall, Monica Tocchet of the Windsor Spitfires."

I remember leading in assists, and points. I was ranked #6 in the draft, but I had been passed up so many times because I was a girl. A girl playing hockey. My dad, Rick Tocchet, could see the frustration on my face. I was upset. Since I was drafted so late, I made it my promise to be the best player I can be.

.......

I was dreading training camps. I didn't want to be a part of it, but I had to. It was my only chance to prove to everyone that I belonged here, in The Show.

"You're looking pretty good out there," I heard someone say behind me. It startled me a little. I turned around to see a man wearing a practice jersey. I knew him as Danny Briere. Danny was around 5'10 and looked about five inches taller than me.

"Thank you. You're not so bad yourself." I grinned at him as I leaned on the stub of my hockey stick. Briere wasn't necessarily an idol of mine, but I did respect him for his talent.

"Yeah it would be awesome if you made the pre-season roster, because we need a fourth line right-winger. You would fit great in that spot," he exclaimed rather loudly. My respect for him immediately went down the drain.

I laughed it off. "Fourth line is a joke to me. I'm here to be the best. I'll prove it when pre-season starts." His expression seemed a little taken back at first, but he soon smirked at me.

"If you make the pre-season roster," he stated.

"I'll make it, don't you worry. Now let's see what you got, old man," I said as I pointed to Ray Emery who was standing in the crease. I could tell he was eavesdropping, just like the other thirty guys around us.

I skated away and watched Danny Briere try to dangle the goal tender out, but he simply failed. I laughed at him and tried one of my old tricks.

.......

I hadn't been cut through training camps. There were four of us left. I was very pleased with the way I performed, but not so much the relationships I made with the guys. I didn't bother going out to dinner with any of them, nor socializing. They were all cocky and egoistical.

I walked into the office. He had a picture of his family on the desk; a wife, two sons and a gorgeous daughter. His family was just like mine, minus the wife. I hadn't had a mother who was present in my time growing up.

I heard the door open behind me and I just took my seat on the chair in front of the desk. Joe Mullen stood next to the desk and Peter Laviolette sat in his big chair.

"Monica, we're going to be completely honest here. What you've been able to do in training camps was outstanding." I held back a huge smile. Laviolette continued, "You're playing first line the first pre-season game against the Capitals. If you earned it, you'll play first line again the next game and from there we'll just see how you do."

"Remember these aren't boys any more, they're full grown men," Joe warned.

I just smirked at him. "Won't stop me from kicking their asses."

And I left it at that.

......

I walked into the locker room. I had just woken up from my pre-game nap at my hotel. All eyes were on me every time I walked in. It would take some time to get used to.

"You excited for tonight's game? I mean you did take my place," I heard Briere say from behind me. I just laughed it off. I hoped to take his place, permanently.

I spun around to face him. "Of course I am. Now don't be surprised if I take your place for the rest of the season, Vet."

I started to get dressed and ready. I smiled at my locker neighbour on my left. "Hey," I said to him. He looked a little surprised. I usually wasn't the one who started the conversations around here. I preferred to stay quiet and stay low.

"What's up?" Claude said.

"Since you, JVR and I are going to be playing first line I thought we could go over a few things. I know you're more into setting up guys along the sideboards. I just wanted to say that's cool and all but I put a lot of thought in the way we should play. I don't mind taking suggestions, but here's what I got," I paused as I got up to take off my sweats and shirt. I slid on my under armour spandex athletic clothing. Since I had my under garments on I knew that there were some guys staring, but it was another thing that I'd have to get used to. I continued while I sat down to get my skates on, "I want to bring it over on the right side on the set. You have to be the last one coming over that line, other than the two D. Around the half boards I'll cut and switch to my opposite side. James will be in front of that net already. You come down to centre but switch to my right side, since you have the right shot. Pronger will come down--"

"Between you and I, I like Kimmo's shot better," he said cutting me off. I got up and grabbed my shoulder pads and threw them on.

I sighed and continued explaining, "Fine then, we'll use Kimmo's shot. But any ways you'll pass to him and he'll either have the choice to pass it back to you or pass it over to me and we'll go from there. If not he can blast in while the screen should be there."

"I like-y." I just laughed at him as I grabbed my jersey. I pulled the orange jersey over my head.
