All-American Girl, Canadian Boy

1/1

Lacy Mattson, formally Lacy Jacobs was laying in a hospital bed around 3 am being rushed into surgery. She hadn’t been beaten up, in an accident, or any weird incident you see on television. The only reason she was here is because she was pregnant and her baby is breach.

Her husband Bryan followed her all the way to the double doors where nurses and doctors shoved him out of the way. So he sat down on the ground a few feet away from the double doors and waited for his wife like a puppy waiting for his owner to come home from work. He sat there in the white hallway and thought about his baby. Even though he told Lacy that he didn’t care about the sex, he really truly wanted a baby boy to come out of the surgery with her.

He fell asleep lying against the wall and dreamed about the things him and his son would do together. He dreamt of taking him fishing by the lake by his house sitting in a boat talking about sports, of watching him play the sport that the two of them would fall in love with together, and winning medals and trophies for his team in State championships with Lacy taking pictures of the moment with her two guys together with the big first place trophy standing up to their waists.

But he was jolted awake, back into reality by a short brunette nurse in pink scrubs, “Mr. Mattson, your wife just had her baby, would you like to come meet her?” Her? No that’s probably just something they always say about babies, just like dogs are associated with guys and as cats with girls right?

Bryan walked through the double doors that were the wall between him and his wife for a couple hours or so. Following the petite brunette he now knew as Cindy, 6th door down on the left he opened the door to his wife holding a pink blanket. Wait, pink? Well, maybe they were out of blue blankets, “Stupid laundry people making his son wear pink for the first moments of his life,” He mumbled to himself. Lacy and her brown eyes that Bryan fell in love with only a year ago met his and she smiled.

“Hi Bryan, meet your daughter, Sydney Rose.”

Since the day they got married
He'd been praying for a little baby boy
Someone he could take fishing
Throw the football and be his pride and joy
He could already see him holding that trophy
Taking his team to state
But when the nurse came in with a little pink blanket
All those big dreams changed

But once he saw his new baby girl all of his hopes and dreams for his son disappeared. Now he had a little girl to spoil and teach all he had to offer her. She was his little princess, and that’s how she would always be. It wouldn’t matter what age she was, she was still allowed to sit on his lap, cry on his shoulder, or call him Daddy. He would always love her no matter what situation she got herself into.

When Daddy was her first word he just about died. He’d spend every moment he could with her. When she turned 5 and was off to kindergarten he stood at the bus stop and watched as she was the last one to go on the bus with all the big kids she stopped and turned around to where all the mommy’s and daddy’s were standing to wish their babies good luck at their first day of school and she blew him a kiss and went and sat in the first seat closest to the sidewalk, and when the bus started moving she waved goodbye in the cutest way possible.

When she turned 10 he watched her flip around on the floor during one of her ever so many gymnastics competitions. His heart pounding so nervously that he was shaking the camera, “Hey Lace, next time we go to the store I need a tripod, I can’t handle this, and I don’t want your parents puking when the watch the video.” He and his wife cheered the loudest for their only daughter than any other parent in the stands.

Then on freshman orientation he went with her following to the classrooms where she’d be going to every day, meeting new people, and exploring new things throughout the year. He’d watch as she’d be talking about her locker or her books and boys would walk by and smile at her, and she’d just give her the Dad look, but Sydney didn’t seem to notice. But he noticed how she was turning into a beautiful young lady.

For Bryan, he never wanted to blink, just because he thought this baby girl would grow up and move away before he opened his eyes. That’s when her 16th birthday hit, and he felt their relationship drifting apart with every passing year. This year he took her to a hockey game, which to his surprise was her favorite sport. She loved cheering for her favorite players, sharing a plate of nachos and a soda with her Dad, celebrating with every goal, and screaming at the refs for every bad call.

That year was her junior year, and the worst part about it for Bryan was when she brought home Jonathan. Jonathan was the new guy in school who transferred from Winnipeg, Manitoba that summer. He was a star hockey player and to Sydney was the 2nd greatest man in the world to her father.

The two of them were inseparable, they would hang out almost every day, she’d go to all his hockey games and tournaments not just because she loved the sport, but she loved the player too. Sometimes Jonathan would skip practices just for her to study for tests or go to the movies. And because he missed practices so often he started to miss out on new plays and didn’t get to play a lot any more, and Sydney noticed.

His coach pulled him aside one day after one of the few practices he went to. “Jonathan where have you been lately, you’ve missed out on at least 2 practices a week?” Jonathan looked at his shoes. Sydney walked through the door and stood there with both hands on her small hand bag he got her for their anniversary a few months ago. Jonathan and his coach saw her walk in.

Coach Martin wiped the sweat from his brow, “Jon, you and I both know why you’ve missed so many practices, and I need you ready for State. Jon you are my Captain,” He said in a hushed tone, “All I’m saying is if you don’t get your act together you won’t be able to go to North Dakota U like you wanted to.” Jonathan nodded his head and went to Sydney where he kissed her on the forehead and walked out of the arena hand in hand off to their lunch date.

Sixteen short years later
She was falling for the senior football star
Before you knew it he was dropping passes
Skipping practice just to spend more time with her
The coach said, hey son what’s your problem
Tell me have you lost your mind
Daddy said you'll lose your free ride to college
Boy, you better tell her goodbye

But did Jon ever break up with Sydney? Of course not, they talked about it at lunch and him laughed and giggled about every little thing. But Sydney brought up the fact that he was missing a lot more practices than he should. He rolled his eyes at her, “Seriously? We have to talk about this again?” She gave him a look, “Jon, not that I’m not enjoying the time we spend together but you need to go to practice. I will follow you wherever you go, just give me the time of day. And besides I don’t want to miss being right by your side when you hoist the Stanley Cup above your head.” She said with a smile.

That smile killed him, she could say anything or do anything with that smile on her face and he would melt in the palm of her hands. That means that at moments like this he would do just that, whatever came out of those lips that were so sweet to kiss, he’d do exactly as she would ask.

Once Sydney and Jonathan were graduated from high school everything took off for the better. They both went to North Dakota University where Sydney studied psychology and graduated with a teaching degree of the same subject, and Jonathan was the Captain of the hockey team and was discovered by multiple scouts and was put into the 2006 NHL entry draft where he was drafted to the Chicago Blackhawks 3rd overall.

Sydney kept her word and followed Jon wherever he went, if it was to Canada for the Olympics or just to the United Center for a game or practice, she’d be there, supporting him. After they completely settled down in their two-bedroom apartment Jon popped the question. It wasn’t just from out of the blue either. He went and made sure that he was one of the 3 stars at the end of a game, playing his hardest to make sure of it so he didn’t have to cheat. Then during the interview with one of the sports reporters he asked Sydney down to the ice, which took a good 2 minutes just because she was already waiting for him by the locker room like she is every game. The red carpet was rolled out and over the loud speaker and throughout the entire crowed he asked her, “Sydney, I love you with all my heart, will you marry me?”

There was applause throughout the entire building when she said yes and kissed him. Which is what happened the 2nd time around during their actual small town church wedding up in Canada. Where her father walked her down the aisle with tears rolling down both their faces and once they got to Jon and the priest she whispered, “I love you Daddy, thank you for everything.” Into his ear and kissed him on the cheek, “I love you too darling.” He whispered back. He was in tears the entire ceremony, “What’s wrong Bryan? Your daughter is happy, you should be too,” Lacy said grabbing onto his hand. “Yeah I know,” he said wiping his eyes, “It’s just I remember her waving me off to school on her first day of kindergarten.” She gave his hand a squeeze, “Don’t worry; she’ll still always be your little girl.”

A few years passed and Sydney was pregnant in a hospital bed in between contractions, “So what do you want us to have?” She asked him with half the energy she had left in her. He took her hand in his and kissed the top of it, “I want a little girl just like you, a beautiful, perfect, half Canadian half American little girl that I can spoil and love until the day I die.” She smiled, “I’ll work on it.” She answered him. Once the doctor came in and gave her the epidural that her mom said she should have Sydney took a needed nap before the baby came.

Once a cry was heard throughout the entire room the doctor gave them the news, “It’s a girl.”

And when they got married and decided to have one of their own
She said, be honest, tell me what you want
And he said, honey you outta know

A sweet, little, beautiful one just like you
I want a beautiful, wonderful, perfect All American

Maggie was Jon’s pride and joy other than Sydney. He spoiled her and brought her to every game. The entire team has met and played with her at least once this season. He has shared everything he knows about the world with her, well except where babies come from.
He loved that little girl; he fed her and changed her, and played dolls with her. Daddy was her first word and Mommy her second. He almost cried bringing her to preschool, and Maggie was a trooper already fitting in with all the little girls and boys in the room. He taught her how to skate by the time she went to kindergarten, and for her 6th birthday he gave her a Toews jersey for her to wear to school and show off to her class mates, even though it was a dress on her she was going to wear it for awhile.

And just like Maggie’s mom, Jonathan Toews turned to mush every time that little girl smiled. So the day that Maggie wanted to go swim at the beach, Jonathan dropped everything and took his baby girl to the beach to swim in Lake Michigan. He lathered her up in sunscreen covering everywhere that the little pink and white polka dotted frilly swimsuit wouldn’t, and slipped her pink floaty wings on both her arms. She ran towards the water but stopped at where the water tickled her pink nailed toes that her mommy painted this morning and ran back where their blanket and chairs were sitting and stuck her hand out.

There was no response.

Then there was a little sound coming from that little girl. “Daddy? Will you come swimming with me?” He smiled and took his sun glasses off.

“For you pumpkin, anything.”
