A Summer to Remember

11

About 3:00 in the morning I got a call, and from someone I didn’t want to call me at 3 in the morning. “Natalie what’s wrong?” “Pat, I think I’m in labor! Come quick!” Wait, that doesn’t sound right. She’s only like 4 months pregnant isn’t she? I mean I’ve had 3 younger sisters but this doesn’t sound right. I started my car to get over to her house.

“Natalie! Where are you?” I heard a soft whimper from upstairs. I followed the sound and went into her room where she was curled up in a ball on the bed. “Pat, it hurts so much.” I ran over and swooped her up in my arms, “I’m right here baby, I’ve got you.” and I went down the stairs as fast as I could. She unleashed another scream of pain as we got in the car. “Drive Patrick!” I sped up, probably breaking the speed limit. I really didn’t want to be at the hospital again. Especially after about 2 days.

The drive felt like it was endless. The stop lights weren’t in our favor so every time I saw a red light in front of me my heart broke a little. I felt hopeless; there was nothing I could do about the pain she was going through. The only thing I could do was stick out my hand and have her squeeze it for support, but then again my hand could only be there for so long before the tips of my fingers turned purple from her grip cutting off my circulation. “Come on, come on!” I was starting to get angry that tonight wasn’t going my way. When it finally turned green I kept driving, blurs of other cars passing by us. But at last the hospital was in sight. “It’s alright babe, we’re almost there. Just hold on.” I said grinding my teeth together from her grip of her hand. I slightly looked over and saw the leftover make up running down her face from the tears of pain.

I parked the car right in front of the emergency room, right where I had a couple days before. Running around to the other side of the car I helped Natalie out by taking her by the hand and helping her inside. I got the attention of a nurse that was walking by, telling her calmly that Natalie was in labor and that she is only about 4 months pregnant. She ran and got a wheel chair and yelled for doctors and nurses. The last thing they did was run over to me, “Are you the father?” Well we all know that actually Tyler is the father, I’m just the best friend that was actually her ex boyfriend but should be her actual husband right now and most likely father but, “Yes, I’m the father.”
