The Hockey Life

The Worst Words

PART THIRTY-THREE: THE WORST WORDS
The next month proved how busy my life really was. I was constantly going somewhere or doing something. I always either had a class, training, or hockey games/practices. School was getting busy again, so I always had plenty of studying to do. Patrick and I made time for each other when we could, but we were losing a lot of time together due to the fact that I had begun to focus in on school so much. It was my last year, and I wanted to make it count. There were a lot of things that had to be done this year for me to graduate and get a good job, and I wanted to do them all as perfectly as possible. That meant that I actually declined dates with Pat just to make sure I had time to work on essays and studying and other assignments I got. I could tell that he was annoyed with me every time I said we couldn’t hang out, but I couldn’t help it.
Usually as it turned out, when I did have free time, it was when Patrick wasn’t around. I had to resort to texting him, which wasn’t always that great. It didn’t compare to actually being with him or at least seeing him. That was why we decided to start Skyping each other. We did that for the first time while he was at a hotel in Vancouver.
In Patrick’s P.O.V.
“Ready for the game tomorrow?” Jonathan asked me as he exited the bathroom and entered the main part of our hotel room. We were staying in Vancouver due to the fact that we had a game against the Canucks the next day.
“As ready as I’ll ever be, I think,” I answered, hoping for a better outcome than the last time we played them, since we lost. It was a bad loss, and it was completely our fault. We didn’t play well. We’d have to work hard this time to show them up. My thoughts were interrupted by a text. It was from Lena.
>Wanna Skype?

“Who was that?” Johnny asked.
“Lena. She wants to Skype with me,” I answered, pulling my laptop out of my bag and sitting down on my bed with it.
“Oh, should I leave?”
“No…why would you leave?” I didn’t know where he was going with that.
“I don’t know, I thought you’d want some privacy. I don’t know what’s going to go down,” Johnny said.
“Nothing that you’re not allowed to see. Geez, do you really think we’re Skyping to do something like THAT?”
“Hey, I don’t know what kind of things you guys do.”
“Nothing like that,” I assured him.
“But I mean, you guys are…you know…right?”
“No.”
“You mean, not at all?” Johnny seemed amazed.
“No, not at all.”
“You’ve never had any type of intercourse?”
“Please don’t ever say that word again. Nobody should ever use that word.”
“Oh my god, you really haven’t! Mass text time.”
“No, no, no, no, no. You are not telling people that!”
“Better yet, mass Snapchat. Smile for the camera Kaner. Tell everyone your news!” Johnny literally had his phone camera aimed at me with Snapchat open at that point.
“Put your phone down! She’s calling me on Skype right now, I’m about to answer.” My voice sounded stern enough for my warning to get through to him, and he ditched his phone without texting or snap chatting anyone. I answered the call and Lena and I talked for a good hour, with John popping in at random times to add his own commentary on the topics we were discussing. When we decided to end the call and I hung up, I was hopeful that I could just to go bed without anymore confrontation from my ridiculous roommate. I was wrong.
“I still can’t believe you haven’t hit that yet,” he said as he climbed into his bed.
“Why is that so hard to believe?” I asked, stripping out of my shirt before getting into my bed as well.
“I don’t know. I got used to hearing about one night stands and relationships that moved really fast. I know it’s been forever since either of those have happened, but still. I’m just surprised,” he explained.
“Yeah, well none of my relationships lasted because they moved so fast, not to mention none of those girls were even close to being right for me. This is different. Lena’s so much better than any of those girls. Everyone has said that we’re great together and that they could see us actually lasting. I want us to last. I don’t want to rush anything,” I said.
“Yeah, I can tell that you really like her.”
“I do. And I mean, it’s not that I don’t want to ‘hit that’. Trust me, I do. I just don’t want to pressure her. I want her to want to. If she’s not ready for it, then it doesn’t need to happen.”
“I get it. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not still going to tease you about your dry spell.”
“Oh my god. Don’t call it a dry spell. You use the worst words for everything.”
“Whatever, I’m going to bed.”
“Fine. Goodnight asshole.”
“’Night douche bag.” It honestly wasn’t uncommon for us to say goodnight to each other like this. We fought a lot, but most of the time it was just fake fights like this one that didn’t even mean anything. We weren’t actually mad at each other, we just felt the need to call each other names for our own satisfaction. It was pretty normal for us.

Notes

Sorry it's such a short chapter! I'll be updating again tonight, most likely, since I've already started the next chapter. I hope you all had a great Christmas, btw. I guess this double update is my late Christmas present to you guys :)
