Don't Get Laid Where You Get Paid

~The Beginning~

On my way to work again, not gonna lie, but I really missed this place. 4 months since I've been here and by the looks of it, not much has changed. I walked down the halls of the Mellon Arena for the first time since the Penguins loss in play-off's last season. I looked around at all the people running around, doing their jobs.

I entered my work room and saw some of my co-workers, chit chatting away, probably about what they did during the break. One of my best friends Karl saw me, "Hey Kayla, long time no see," he said hugging me tightly, like he's always done.

"I know right? How ya doin?" I asked, looking up at him.

"I'm good, you?"

"I'm good." We decided to take a step away from everyone else, knowing they would try to hear everything in our conversation. Let's just say that the people in our department aren't always the nicest.

"So did you hear about the new changes?" he asked, as we grabbed a seat on the couch.

"No what?" I asked getting serious.

"Supposedly a lot of the upper positions quit or got moved around so there are openings everywhere,"

"Shut up, like who?"

"Not sure yet, if we knew anyone who did get moved or quit, they would've told one of us."

"So what positions are open?"

"Roadies, water boys, merch, stuff like that-oh and assistants,"

"Shut up! Really!?!" I asked getting excited.

"Ssh, lower your voice, you don't want all of them to know," them being the nosey co-workers.

"Right. Well I hope I get moved up,"

"I know you do,"

"Well yeah, I mean, who wants to clean their dressing room for a living. I hate being on maintenance,"

"I know you do," he chuckled. "That's why you really have to keep it quiet this time." He leant in closer to whisper, "and supposedly they might be moving some of us up." I went blank after that.

"Are you kidding? This is the best day ever," I said getting excited.

"Remember to keep it down okay?"

"Okay," I smiled. "You rock Karl," I said giving him a hug.

He was the only person I could trust here, everyone else just wants to save their own asses and do whatever they can to do what the can to stay working here. There are nice people here, just not in our department. Some days, I really don't blame them, I mean, some clean the whole arena, others the halls, and other's (like myself) clean the dressing rooms. It can be a neat job, and you get to keep what they may leave, but it's not always the nicest room. They are men for Pete's sake, good luck to anyone who goes in there, they may come out smelling like sweat or piss. Disgusting right?

Just as we were done catching up, our head of the department came in, looking very formal today. My guess is because it's the first day back and we'll be meeting new people and might get interview's with other people, we all had to dress 'formal'. (Compared to our usual black movie theatre type uniforms).

"Good morning everyone, I hope you had a great break, it is so good to see you again," he began.

"Boy we're in for a long speech," I whispered to Karl, making him smile.

"This year at the 'Igloo', there'll be quite a few changes, for some, you'll be benefitting from them, others, not so much. Anyway, this year there was a large population that has sadly left our 'community' so those spots will be filled with other workers here," he coughed. Finally, the information I need, I thought. "As well as people are leaving, there have been several interviews going on for new jobs here in the lower end of the food chain, if you will." Ned Flemmings always tries to make thing's sound funny, but it never works, God bless his soul for trying. "So that means that some of you will be moving up in the food chain," he chuckled. Give me a break, spit it out man! "So throughout the day, I'll be calling you to my office and we'll have a chat about your future here. Okay, thanks, and have a great day back!" He smiled, walking into his office.

"I think you'll get upgraded," Karl said with a smile.

"Thanks, I hope so.. But you will definitely be," He gave a 'yeah right' look. "Don't give me that look Karl, I fully know you know you will," he laughed.

Then Mr. Flemmings started calling us in one by one. A couple of girls got moved to merch, and one lucky fella got moved to ticket sales. Karl got called next. When he came out, Mr. Flemmings followed, then led him out of the room. He looked nervous, like he wasn't sure of what would happen. A while later Mr. Flemmings came back in the room. I was sitting by myself, not wanting to associate myself with the others.

"Miss Ferris?" I looked up and saw him smiling at me. I got up and went in his office, the last time I was in here was when he promoted me to 'locker room' cleaner. "Please take a seat," he smiled, clasping his hands together on his desk, being very intimidating. I swallowed deeply, not knowing what to expect.

Notes

I hope you like it. I can guarantee that chapter two is coming up next, because I got a lot of time on my hands today, and because you kinda gotta get a feel for the story (or so I think). Hope you like it, if you have any ideas or stuff like that, please let me know! Feedback is always welcome!

Also, as I mentioned earlier I wrote this years ago and thought I should post it here. I'm not an idiot and I know that Jordan is no longer with the Penguins, but who doesn't like a little blast from the past?

Thanks for reading!! :)
