That Summer
Stupid Boys and Goodbyes
*Katie’s POV*
“Beau I need to talk to you, I have great news!” I said into my phone. It was the second time I had called him. The first time after he didn’t answer I hung up, but this time I left a voicemail. I couldn’t wait to tell him I was going to Pittsburgh for college. We could actually become something now! I was overwhelmed with happiness that I could be with him, but at the same time I was sad. Leaving all my friends and family was something I really didn’t want to do. It wouldn’t be the same going to parties without Annabella. I wouldn’t be able to go to Matt or Gally if I had a problem Annabella or I couldn’t fix. I was on my own. Leaving in a week wasn’t going to be easy, but at least I had Beau.
“Yah Bella, I called and he hasn’t even responded yet.” I said to her as we were out to eat for lunch. “Katie, it’s been forty eight hours. Don’t sweat it. He’s probably wicked busy being a professional hockey player and all.” I pulled my hair from out of my face and sipped my drink. “You’re probably right. I’m just overthinking it.” “I’m always right.” She said smugly, as our waiter brought our food out. I rolled my eyes and picked up a French fry. “Dig in!”
Annabella and I talked about the colleges we were going to and everyone we were and weren’t going to miss as we bonded over lunch. “I can’t believe we’re being separated. Who’s gonna be the one who stops me from fucking a random guy at a party when I’m drunk!?” I said, laughing. Annabella laughed too as she said “I know Kay…I know.” The more we talked, the sadder I got. We reminisced over all the high school memories we had together. From the first time meeting, to the first time Annabella told me she slept with Gabe. Some moments were funny, while others were more serious. I lingered on eating the last of my food, because I knew this was one of the last times Annabella and I would be together. I noticed Bella was doing the same, because she would only pick up an onion ring every five minutes or so. After milking going out to eat for all it was worth, I stood up and hugged her. “Hey, see you soon Bella.” “You too Kay. Keep me updated on the whole Beau situation.” “I will.” We walked our separate ways. I got into my car and beeped the horn as I drove past her. “Bye Bella.” I said to myself.
Ugh, I couldn’t stop checking my phone for at least a text from Beau. Come on, why wasn’t he responding back!? He couldn’t possibly be that busy. I mean is he not using his phone or something?! I tried calming down as I paced back and forth in my room. I was supposed to be packing my stuff as I was leaving in four days, but I couldn’t focus. The only thing I could focus on was Beau. I don’t know why he would even be ignoring me. When he talked, his feelings seemed real. This whole situation was confusing. Maybe…he had already found a girl. A lot of puck bunnies could be at him already. He could be hooking up with a random girl every night, like he did with me. The last thought sent a pang of sadness through my heart. He was probably telling these girls the same thing he said to me. And then the next morning, he would move on to another girl. A part of me felt that way about Beau, but another part felt that Beau was just being a stupid boy, who didn’t have the brains to call me back. I hope that was the situation, I thought, as I tried as hard as I could to focus on packing.
Good luck today Katie; Miss you already girl!; Call me as soon as you get there. I had a bunch of texts from my friends already as I got out of bed. What are they doing calling me so early? I looked at my clock. “Shit, its 8:30!?” I had a 10 o’clock flight to Pittsburgh and I still needed to take a shower and finish the last minute packing. I went downstairs to eat something quickly and found my mom in the kitchen. “Thanks for waking me up mom.” I said sarcastically. “Katie, I’m not gonna be there for you to wake you up every morning in college. You gotta learn on your own now.” I kissed her on the cheek before putting a bagel in the toaster. “Remind me to not take any morning classes.” I ate my bagel faster than I normally would and ran up the stairs.
“Goodbye room.” I said as I took one last look around. I had many emotional moments in this room. From crying over drama with Annabella to sneaking Gally in at midnight. This was it, I thought. Kinda depressing ain’t it. I told my parents to stay home as I would drive to the airport myself. We said our goodbyes. My mom cried a little and my dad tried staying Mr. Tough Guy. “Visit often.” was the last thing I heard them say before getting in my car.
