Dear Patrick
Letter Twenty-Two
Tuesday, November 24, 2013
Dear Patrick,
How's my best friend doing? I miss you like hell. I watched you play last night against the Penguins. You did great, I'm so proud of you. I realized it while watching how happy I am for you. I'm sorry for not being open-minded toward your girl Laura. I guess it really was just jealousy. I heard Heat of the Moment by Asia earlier today and it reminded me of me and you, well the first part, at least. The disco in '82 part is irrelevant but you know what I mean. I don't know how we missed this song, Patrick, it's amazing. We have to add it to that collection we started a couple years ago. I love that you love old music- it's the best thing ever. Remember when you got your new contract with the Hawks and you got REO Speedwagon to come and sing "I Can't Fight This Feeling" for me at my birthday? Thanks for that. Trust me that I wanted nothing more than you being home for it but you brought my favorite band and sat them in my room. God, I loved you so much more than anything that day, Pat.
Remember that one time me and you went for a "road trip." I laugh so freaking much when I remember. You'd just gotten your license and wanted to experiment and your dad and my mom were stupid enough to let us do it. So we packed our bags and we left- with leftover pizza, water bottles, and (secretly) beer. "Of course," I remember you saying with that side grin, "the beer is for when we get to where we're going. Not for while me, being the designated driver, is driving." "Oh well just as long as you're being mature about this," I laughed to you. "You see Lana, this is why you're lucky to have me. Otherwise you'd go out drunk driving and get yourself killed." Then you fake sighed and continued lecturing in that Patrick-knows-best tone. I loved your sarcasm.
I laughed so hard that trip, Kaner. I even pissed my pants. I think I piss my pants every time I remember pissing my pants. It's because we'd just gotten to some lake, river thing and you parked the car. I thought nothing of it at that time because we were just best friends. So we sat on probably wet sand with a blanket that only fit us because you were only a little bit bigger than me- and I'm small. And then we played 21 questions. My question was "Which song comes on and immediately reminds me of you?" I honestly wanted to hear "I Love Rock N Roll" but no, you surprised me and said, "Every Breath You Take." Then you got on the hood of your car and started screaming the song "Every breath you take, I'll be watching you..." I lied when I told you I'd spilled the beer on the blanket but you knew I'd pissed my pants which made it even funnier.
I'm sorry that I've been so selfish to you. You're my best friend :)
Love,
Lana
