Empty Rooms

With one month to go, Liz and Adam were spending one of their last days of freedom by packing and moving. They had finally decided on a living arrangement, and it didn't include a Dougie room and a sex swing. Dougie was taking over Liz's room at her apartment and Liz was moving in with Adam. Liz was sitting on the couch in Adam's apartment, their apartment, watching various Bruins lug boxes in and out of the apartment.
"Jesus Liz, when the hell did you acquire so much crap!" Tyler groaned as he dropped a box just inside the front door.
She shrugged, "Things just happen, and sometimes you can't explain it."
"Sure, perfectly fine reasoning if you're not the one lugging the boxes up and down stairs."
"Hey, last September I was perfectly fine chilling in my sweat pants at home and not going out. But I'm pretty sure YOU were the one who suggested I come out with your teammates. So really, whose fault is it that you're spending a perfectly good Saturday lugging boxes?"
He stood there for a second standing by the door, staring at her. "Why do you always have to be right?"
"Just a gift Seggy boy." She smiled contently.
"Out of the way Segs, this shit's heavy!" Greg and Looch came in through the door, each on one side of a box labeled 'HEAVY' in large red letters.
"So whoever wrote this on there was not lying one bit."
"I only put the truth in permanent marker." The two unimpressed men looked over and she smiled.
"It's a good thing we like you."
"I wasn't the one who asked you to do this! Look at the curly headed potato boy for that one."
Greg chuckled at her description of her boyfriend and shook his head heading back towards the door for another load. Julie came through the door carrying a bag over each shoulder.
"It really does amaze me how much we seemed to cram into that apartment. It's like magic." She dropped the bags on the table and plunked down to the spot beside Liz, placing a hand on her extremely round stomach.
"What's cooking in there?"
Liz shrugged. "Not a whole lot."
"Good! I was worried all this excitement would be too much for the little stinker."
"Nah, she's happy hanging out in here!" She pointed down to her stomach.

Over the next our boys filed in and out lugging one box after another, when the last box had been dropped a collective sigh was released and everyone found a seat somewhere around the room. Adam sat down on the other side of Liz from Julie on the couch.
"You know, I could get used to watching you boys do everything while I hang out and relax on the couch."
He chuckled, "well don't get too used to it. They're usually not this helpful."
"Hey, we are fucking rays of helpful sunshine." Marchy quipped from the corner.
"Fucking rays of helpful sunshine, eh March?" Liz chuckled.
"Shut up, I'm hungry. I'm not responsible for what I say when I'm hungry."
As if on que, Liz heard a growl come from Adam's stomach. She looked over at him, raising an eyebrow. He shrugged.
"Well then why don't we get you boys some pizza. I think we can afford to break the diet for one day."
"It's a good thing Berg isn't here."
"I'm sure even Saint Patrice has a piece of pizza once and a while." Liz said while hoisting herself off the couch.
"Not with playoffs around the corner he doesn't!"
"She turned around to face the room of Bruins. Let's put it this way, it's either Pizza or nothing. Make your choice." She crossed her arms and stared at them.
"Pizza." Came the chant from the crowd.
Liz smiled contently and headed towards the kitchen to order the pizza. After she made the call to place the order for the ridiculous amount of pizza they would need to feed these hungry boys, she thought back to what Brad had said about playoffs. She turned around leaning up against the counter and placing a hand on her stomach. She had completely forgotten about the fact that the baby would come just around the beginning of playoffs. She closed her eyes thinking about how stressful for Adam a new baby plus playoffs was going to be. A few minutes later, she heard footsteps coming into the kitchen and looked up seeing Adam coming towards her. She gave him the best smile she could muster, but he saw right through it.
"What's wrong?"
She shook her head, "just thinking."
"About?"
"Nothing important."
He reached out and pulled her into his chest. "See, that would work, but I know you too well."
"Thinking about what Brad said out there."
"Never listen to Brad."
"About playoffs, Adam. New baby and playoffs? How are we gonna do that?"
"We'll find a way, guys do it all the time."
"Sure guys do it all the time, but how are WE going to do it? I've never gone through playoffs period, let alone with a baby!"
"Hey hey, calm down," he pulled back to look at her, "it's gonna be hard, yeah, but it's not like we won't have help. You really think any of those guys wives are going to let you deal with a new baby on your own? You're going to be kicking those girls out of here just for some peace."
"I guess."
"Let's hear you say it." The smirk was pulling at his lips, "say I'm right, you know I am."
Before she could say anything, she heard the buzzer for the intercom go off and the chant of 'PIZZA!' come from the next room over. Slipping out of Adams arms she smirked at him, "saved by the bell."

Later that night after everyone was fed and a good majority of the boxes had been sorted and put away, Adam and Liz finally went to bed. Rolling over, Liz reached for the body that was supposed to be beside her, but felt nothing but empty bed. Opening her eyes, she looked at the clock on the beside table that said it was only 2:45 in the morning. She let out a yawn and slowly swung her feet around to the side of the bed taking a second to admire her swollen ankles before getting up in search of her missing boyfriend. She walked through the living room with no result and made her way towards the kitchen. When she got into the kitchen she noticed a light coming from down the hall, Dougie's old room, and made her way towards the brightness. When she made it to the doorway, she saw Adam sitting in the middle of the empty room staring at the wall.
"Well this is creepy."
Adam turned his head to look at her and yawned, rubbing his eyes. She made her way over to him and slowly made her way to the floor beside him. Once she was down she rested her head on his shoulder and he wrapped his arm around her.
"What are you doing up?"
"Couldn't sleep."
"Thanks Sherlock."
"I think we should paint this room black and gold."
"Because there isn't enough of that in this place already?"
He shrugged and she chuckled, turning to look up at him. "How about pink?"
"Sure, we're talking about colours that there's too much of in here and you bring up pink?"
"Hey! This is a boys apartment, it's pink free."
"There's about to be a little girl in here, I bet you anything it's going to look like a pepto explosion in here."
"Pepto explosion?" She raised an eyebrow at him, but he didn't waiver.
"Fine. What about yellow?"
"Yellow." He repeated as if it was something he had to process.
"Yeah, they say that kids who grow up in yellow rooms are happier."
"I could handle yellow."
They were silent for a moment before Liz spoke again, "So you came in here just to contemplate paint colours in the middle of the night?"
"Came in here to think."
The look on his tired face told her that she shouldn't push the issue any further and she knew better than anyone that sometimes you just needed some quiet to think. She leaned up and pressed a light kiss to the side of his neck and rested her head on his shoulder again.
After a few minutes more of silence his opposite hand reached over and he laced his fingers through hers that were resting on his leg.
"We can handle this."
"Of course, we can handle anything." She squeezed his hand reassuringly. "I love you McQuaid."
He turned his head and pressed a kiss to the side of hers. "Love you too."

Notes

Holy crap, it's an UPDATE!

I'm so sorry it took so long, I've had no ideas for this what so ever! BUT good news is, I think I have ideas for one more chapter, and then it's baby time!

YAY FOR BABY TIME!

So let me know what you think and if you have any ideas for what you want to see!

YOU ARE WONDERFUL!

Comments

You aren't a horrible person!! Life happens, and it's okay to have taken a break. But now, if you're back, I'm so happy for updates to start coming back!!
I think that in a traditional sense, an engagement/wedding/etc. would come next. That's always an option to explore for Adam and Liz. If not, maybe just some good old-fashioned drama (car accident? hockey collision? sick baby?? ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES)
Honestly, I'll be happy to read anything about the McQuaids at this point. Just take your time and things ideas may come! :) :) :)
