Chapter Thirteen - Boy or Girl?

*Chelsea's POV*
Today is the big day.
Today is the day we go in to find out the gender of the baby.
Well, Brandon and I won't find out for at least a day. Brittany and Stacey have already got the party set up, all gender neutral colors since we won't be finding out until we cut into the cake that they're making once they find out the gender.
Stacey's mom is a fantastic baker, and decorator, and when she heard the news she immediately offered to bake a cake if we wanted one. She's literally one of the sweetest women I've ever met, Patrick's very lucky to be gaining such a sweet Mother-In-Law. I remembered how my dad told us how much our grandma didn't like him at first and how much he dreaded going to our mom's families parties. Everything's all good now between them though.
Getting ready that morning all I felt were butterflies in my stomach. Or maybe it was just the baby being super active today. After all, his/her daddy is an NHL athlete and I'm pretty active myself. Or the baby could be just as exited as we are for us to find out it's gender. Who knows.
As I'm waiting for Brandon to get to the apartment to pick me up for the appointment, I'm terribly restless. I think Brittany's sick of seeing me pace back and forth at this point.
"Can you sit down and relax?!" Brittany hissed, smacking my arm as I passed by her for probably the hundredth time.
"No. Because even though I'm not allowed to know until tomorrow, I'm still nervous to find out what the gender is. I mean yes, we have names picked out, so I don't mind either way. I'm just nervous.. you know how I am Britt." I ramble on, finally stopping when I hear a light knock on the door. "I'll get it!" I exclaim as I start walking towards the door.
Opening the door, I'm relieved to see Brandon on the other side. He pulls me into a loose hug, kissing my cheek when we pull apart.
"That didn't take forever." I murmur, grabbing my purse off of the table.
"Someones anxious." Brandon remarks as he waits for me to step through the doorway to close the door behind me.
"Yeah, well... this is a big deal." I say, sticking my tongue out in a childish manner.
"Can't agree with that." He replies, pressing the down button on the elevator.

After the seemingly never ending drive to the hospital, we're finally seated in the ultrasound waiting room. Only two mom's ahead of us. Two too many, in my opinion. I just wanted to get the results, hand the envelope over, go to bed and wake up to find out the gender of our baby. I have my fingers crossed that it'll be a boy. I really want a boy to be my first born, mostly because if he's anything like how Patrick is with me, and the rest of our sisters, I wanted that for any daughter I might have in the future.
Then again, having a girl would be pretty great too. I'd finally get to buy all those cute little dresses I see everytime I pass the baby/toddler section in any store. I could break out all of my old Disney Princess films and watch them with her everyday. Even dress her up super cutely for Halloween and every other holiday. She could even turn out to be a mini-me. That'd be amazing.
Of course, Brandon doesn't mind what we have just as long as it's a healthy baby. Yes, I do agree with him on that. I want the baby to be super healthy and have no problems, but I also have a preference. I can't help it though. I've always wanted to have a boy first, for as long as I can remember. Most people I know actually want to have boys first.
When Brittany and I would have our late night talks about life, she told me once she wanted a pair of twins. A boy and a girl. She changed her mind not long after one of our other friends, Alyssa, had twins. They can be a lot of work, after all you don't have just one baby. You have two, at once. I, personally, don't think I could handle that. Even though I do find twins to be simply adorable. The whole matching clothes thing is the cutest.
Anyways, back to reality.
After I finish about one and a half magazines, my name gets called and Brandon and I head back to the little room. Okay, it's not that little, but it's still little. Gosh I'm nervous.
"So, did you want to find out the gender?" Natalie, the same ultrasound tech we had last time asks.
"Yeah, but if you could do us one little favor, that'd be great." Brandon states, starting to pull out the paper and envelope from his pocket.
"Sure, do you want me to write down the gender and slip it in there for you?" Natalie asks, holding out her hand to take the paper from Brandon.
"Yeah, that'd be great! His sister and my soon to be sister-in-law want to throw a gender reveal party for us. We agreed, mostly because I think the idea is super cute." I say, realizing how often I've said the phrase 'super cute' today. I needed to stop saying and thinking that. It's so not like to me to use that that often.
Natalie carefully places the gel on my growing stomach, causing goosebumps to form with how cold it is. I should be used to it by now, I've been getting monthly ultrasounds, even though I've only been getting them for two months now. Internally I shrug at my thoughts. It was best if I didn't overthink things right now, it'd put stress on both me and the baby. Neither of us needed that right now.
"Since you don't want to know the gender, I'd suggest looking away for a few seconds while I check." Natalie suggests, which is actually a good idea. It really couldn't be that hard to figure out if it was a boy or girl. "No peeking either."
Brandon chuckles at the last part, causing me to laugh as well. I can hear Natalie scoff as we laughed.
"Okay, you can look again." Natalie says, moving the moniter up a bit on my stomach. You could see the baby's head, almost count all of the fingers and it has the tiniest feet I've ever seen in my life. It's so adorable.
"I can't wait to meet you my sweet angel." I say to my stomach, Brandon squeezes my hand as Natalie smiles down at us.
"I don't think I've mentioned this before, but you are the sweetest couple I've ever met. The way he looks at you, it's just so sweet." Natalie states, placing a hand on her hip as she stops moving the moniter around over my stomach. "I really mean that too. I better be invited to the wedding." She teases, giving us a stern look.
For someone whose only 28, she sure acted so much more mature than her age. More than anyone else I knew, to be completely honest. The few times I've had my ultrasounds done, she's always been the one to do them. Since I'm usually the last one to come in, we'd always talk after she was done with my ultrasound. I found out that she's originally from a town in Indiana, she's married and has a five year old daughter. Her husband, Jordan, happens to be a huge Blackhawks fan. He's got about five jerseys, one happens to be a Kane jersey and another being a Saad jersey. Two of my personal favorite players, not to sound biased, okay maybe to sound biased. The other three were Hossa, Bickell and Shaw. He even has a Pirri jersey for the Ice Hogs.
I could tell if I ever met him we'd instantly become friends. Besides my Brandon, Brandon Pirri happens to be my other favorite Brandon on the team. I have high hopes for him in the NHL, seeing as one day he'll become a full timer instead of being called up every now and then.
"Thanks Natalie, you're the greatest. Y'know that?" I mused, pulling her into an awkward one armed hug. She returns the hug with a bright smile.
"Why thank you Chelsea. I think the same about you." She responds, wiping the gel off of my stomach with one of the towels she had laying on the counter behind her. "Same to you Brandon. You're so great for staying with Chelsea through all of this. She told me the story behind this pregnancy."
Brandon blushes a bit when she tells him that. I stifle a laugh, playing it off as a little cough. I get a weird look from Brandon, but he just shakes his head as if he doesn't want to know. This time I just let the laugh happen.
"Well, you're all set! Here's the envelope! No peeking!" Natalie urged, using her mom voice. "Oh! What do you guys think the baby is?"
"Well, personally I hope it's a girl, but Chelsea wants it to be a boy." Brandon answers for the both of us and I get down off of the raised chair. "She really wants it to be a boy."
Natalie chuckles, "Well one of you is right. But I'm not saying who. I'll see you guys next month!"
We say goodbye, leaving the office and heading back home. Before we go back home though, we decided to grab a bite to eat. I couldn't have been happier since I was really craving some cheese fries and a hot dog. Not Chiago Style though, everything but the mustard and absolutely no hot peppers. Everything else I was okay with. I just never liked mustard and I hate anything too spicy.
Instead of going back to my apartment shared with Brittany, Melanie and soon another one of my sisters, we went back his and Andrew's apartment. I felt like we barely spent any time there, it was more at my apartment or out and about in Chicago somewhere. Brandon probably didn't want to come back here often because it's like a man-cave for him and Andrew but I honestly didn't mind. I lived with Patrick for a period of time before he met and moved in with Stacey. I'm used to it.
To our surprise, Andrew's actually home when we get there. Brandon thought he had some plans with Brittany, but obviously he didn't.
"Hey you two. So, boy or girl?" Andrew asks, obviously forgetting the plans Brittany and Stacey have. Silly boy.
"We won't know until tomorrow, at the party. Did you forget?" I say, questioning him at the end as I take a seat on the couch.
"Oh yeah! Slipped my mind for a sec." Andrew says sitting down next to me, kicking his smelly feet up on the couch right next to my face. That boy has no shame at all.
"Get your smelly feet away from me." I hiss, pushing his feet away from me. I really didn't know how Brittany could put up with that, but love is love and they sure were in love with each other. After spending some more time here with both Brandon and Andrew, Andrew ends up leaving to do some shopping with Brittany for the party. I gave the envelope to Andrew to pass it along to Brittany. If they were going shopping for the party, they might need to know the gender. I still have my fingers crossed that it's a boy.
Brandon being the kind person that he is, offers to make dinner for the two of us despite the fact he isn't the best chef in the world. He ends up just making some hamburgers with a salad, which is completely fine with me. It's nothing close to what I'm actually craving, which would be honey bbq wings from Pizza Hut and nachos from Taco Bell.
After we finish eating, I offer to clean up the dishes as it's the least I could do. Even though I always clean up the dishes when he comes over to my place. I actually liked to clean the dishes, until my fingers get all wilted though. Once that happens, I just toss the rest of the dishes into the dishwasher. Not like I actually care about my nails, but when I do put time and effort into polishing them and making them look nice I usually skip doing the dishes by hand.
Before we know it, it's already nine o'clock. Brandon offers to take me home but since we're both going to the same place tomorrow and he's stayed over at my place a few times so it was not a big deal for me to stay over. That being said, Brandon offered me a pair of sweats and a t-shirt. I gratefully accepted them as I didn't really want to sleep in my jeans and sweater. Sure, my sweater is super comfy but not to sleep in. Definitely not to sleep in.
Going to sleep that night, I had the worlds strangest dream. Brandon and I were arguing and apparently I was engaged to Tyler, who didn't like that I talked to Brandon so often. That set Brandon off because he really didn't like Tyler and thought I could do much better which in turn made me extremely mad. To make things even stranger, Brittany was dating my brother! All in all it was just a very strange dream.
- - - x - - -
I woke up the next morning, remembering parts of the dream I had last night. It honestly was the strangest thing ever. Shaking it off, I got out of bed and wandered into the kitchen.
"Morning. Did you sleep well?" Brandon asks, raising an eyebrow as I walked in.
"Yeah.. why?" I ask, running a hand through my thick blonde hair.
"Because you were tossing and turning all night. Did you have a bad dream or something?" He asks, a coy smile on his lips.
"Oh well.. yeah I did have a pretty strange dream." I mumble as I pull a glass out of the cabinet, pouring myself a glass of water and taking a sip before I started in to tell him about the dream.
"Wow. Yeah I would be mad if you chose him over me. Only because I'm obviously better." Brandon says wrapping his arms gently around me. "I'm only kidding about the better part, I'm not that conceited."
- - - x - - -
After eating breakfast, Brandon and I swung back at my apartment before heading to the party. I still needed to shower and change my clothes. I was quite impressed with how patiently Brandon waited for me as I got ready. Being the girl that I am, it took me at least forty-five minutes to get ready. I honestly didn't know many guys as patient as Brandon is.
As we drove towards Patrick and Stacey's house, the nervous butterflies returned to my stomach. I was very grateful of Patrick for opening up his home for this party, he truly is the best brother I could ever ask for. Also, he's the only brother I have. I felt nervous mostly because today was the day we would actually find out the gender of our baby. I really don't think I could wait any longer, to be honest. I wanted to find out if I was right, I sure hoped I was right.
I was also kind of nervous for how many people would be there. I hadn't told them anything about what I wanted besides the fact I wanted a lot of food and a cake for revealing the gender. For all I knew, they invited the whole team, along with the guys' girlfriends, wives and children. I knew Brandon's parents and George would be here, along with my parent's and sisters. I think they even sent an invite to Tyler, but I wasn't sure if he was going to be able to make it. I hope he's here, I missed having him around.
When we finally arrived, late like they told us to, I was surprised that a spot was left open for us in the driveway. Literally everyone seemed to be here, just like I thought. I even saw Tyler's car parked a little ways down the street. Did he really drive all the way up here? He'd get an extra big hug when I see him.
Brandon opens the front door, allowing me to enter the party first. What a gentleman, even though I didn't want to be the first in the door. He doesn't leave me standing in the doorway alone for long though. I smile when I feel his hand resting gently on the small of my back.
"Guests of honor have arrived!!" Brittany shouts, loud enough I'm pretty sure everyone now knew we were here.e
"There's my favorite sister!" Patrick exclaims wrapping me up in a big hug, kissing my cheek before letting go of me.
"Where's the food?" I ask, my face blank and emotionless as I attempted to get on Patrick's nerves just for fun.
"In the kitchen.. wait.. I don't even get a proper hello? Maybe you aren't my favorite sister after all..." Patrick grumbles, a look of fake hurt flashing across his face.
"I'm kidding. You know I love you Patrick." I reply, hugging him again.
Patrick eventually did end up taking me into the kitchen. Which I was thankful of, except for the fact I was greeted by everyone else the moment I stepped foot into the kitchen. Stacey's mom, my mom and Brandon's mom all collaborated on the food and there was a vast array of pretty much everything. That was probably why everyone was lingering around the kitchen and dining room. Looking around, my eyes find the cake. I wouldn't be able to cut the cake for a while though. At least, not until after Brandon and I ate something first.
- - - x - - -
Finally. Time to cut the cake and find out what's inside of it. Pink. Blue. I really was hoping for blue, a little boy would be so cute, even though everyone else seemed to think it was a girl. After mingling with more of the wives and girlfriends of the various hawks, it was at a tie to how many people thought boy and how many thought girl. Now, we would finally know. I could hear Brittany and Stacey squealing like little girls in the background as I picked up the knife.
Cutting into the cake, I kept my eyes closed until I made two cuts that formed a pretty large piece of cake. Couldn't help that though, my eyes were closed.
Pulling the slice out with Brandon, the cake revealed that we are having a...
GIRL!
Everyone that was in the room for the reveal aww'd when the cake at the center was filled with pink icing.
- - - x - - -
"So, what are you going to name her?" Tyler asks, sneaking up behind me after we finish handing out pieces of cake to everyone.
"Tyler! Hey!" I say, pulling him in for a giant hug. Brandon just gives me a look before shaking his head, the dream I told him about must still be on his mind. "Brandon actually came up with her name. Emma Michelle Saad. Cute, isn't it?"
"Congrats man, I never would have been able to pick a name." Tyler says to Brandon before turning his attention back to me. "That is pretty cute. Well, I'll take my cake and be over there with Patrick if you wanna talk more." Tyler tells me, nodding in the direction of where he'll be.
"Okay, I'm glad you could make it!" I reply, taking a bite of the cake. It tasted so good. Stacey's mom did a fantastic job with every aspect of it. It was adorable and tasted wonderful.
I just couldn't believe it. We're having a girl. Emma Michelle. Only four and a half more months and we'd get to meet her.
