The Maze To Your Heart

Chapter Four: First Period.

Sorry it's been awhile, I have soooo much going on with sports. Anyways just wondering if I should continue this. Yes or no? If not I'm starting a story Nail Yakupov/Ryan Nugent Hopkins.. or Jordan Eberle idk haven't decided. Anywayssss yaa

Mavel's POV

I sat there in my car, in silence, staring up at my old house. The house that was pretty much the majority of my life. It's where I had my first kiss, decided I was going to be playing hockey the rest of my life. The place that started the dream that was shortly coming to an end.

I had a U18 silver medal, the year I was 17 and an assistant captain. In the IIHF World Juniors, I won gold the next year as the captain. Being captain at 18, was something I would never forget. The year after I came back, and won bronze. Then I got the phone call for the Olympics. I was asked to be captain. Twenty years old, Olympic captain. How was I supposed to know if those girls even respected me? Or the fact that I was good enough.

I ended up going on to win gold, and MVP at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

As far as where I am now, is no where. I was giving up hockey, tore my ACL. I was lucky enough that it should heal up fine, but getting hit one more time was going to paralyze me in my leg, meaning never walking again. I couldn't do it, it was too much to risk. Plus, I had a 3rd degree post concussion syndrome.

I looked down at my brace on my knee, it really complimented my shorts. That was sarcasm by the way. I quickly glanced next door before opening my car door ajar.

While I was awkwardly limping to pop the trunk, I noticed a presence appearing over the little hill top.

"You must be Mavel, your mother Nicole told me you were coming today. I'm Michel, Christiane's husband, and your good friend Kristopher's stepdad." He smiled happily while putting out a hand for a handshake. How formal, I thought to myself.

"Yeah, that's me. I'm sorry I couldn't make your wedding, but I hope you got the gift." I spoke politely, trying my best to make a first impression. I nervously bit the inside of my lip knowing the real reason why I didn't come.

"Yeah, we loved it. Thank you, but now let me help you carry your stuff in. Nicole told me that you injured your knee in hockey." He said as he picked up some boxes, and I grabbed a bag.

* * *

"Mom, do I really have to go?" I whined sounding like I was five years old again.

"Yes, you haven't seen them in years. I think you deserve them something." She complained.

"I don't mind Michel and Christiane, I just don't want him to be there." For some reason a grin was playing on my lips, and trust me I was fighting it.

"Why, you said Kris and you were fine with each other?" She raised an eyebrow as she freshened up.

"That was before I knew he had a long time girlfriend." I sneered.

"Yeah, if only you would come and visit once in a while. It's sad to say that it took a serious injury for you to come home, now come on Mavel, get ready." I just moped and went to my room to get changed.

I couldn't even dress nice, my dumb knee brace always had to be on. It was bad enough that I walked with a limp. I walked like a female pimp. I swear. After what seemed like a life time of searching for something to wear, I found a flare type like black and white dress. It just cut out by my knees, so it wasn't half bad.

***

I was seated first with my mom and Kristopher's parents. We awaited the beloved arrival of Kristopher and his girlfriend, Catherine.

I looked up to see the two love birds walk in holding hands. A smile broke through, I was happy for him. He looked very happy, and she was very pretty. I did find myself staring at him, mostly because he was really fit now. He gained so much muscle, and grew out his hair, which in my opinion, really suits him.

"Mavel! Wow, it's been so long." I heard the familiar voice holler.

I smiled, "Kris, it's nice to see you too." I chuckled softly.

"Yeah, this is my girlfriend Catherine." He introduced her very polite.

"Hi," I smiled as she replied with the same thing I said.

With him sitting in front of me, I just pictured that little boy. I felt empty, I didn't know what to do. This was a little too over whelming for me.

I found that I wasn't really involved with any of the conversing. I was playing with my food, ocassionally eating it. Someone would ask me a question every now and then, I would give a very practical answer. I was a real mood-killer.

"So Mavel, Kris and I watched you play for the Olympics, well on the television." She smiled oh so perfectly.

"Oh yeah, Mavel, you were completely amazing. I knew that you were going to be captain, win gold, get the game winner and be called up." He proudly said.

"Thanks, yeah I loved going to the Olympics. I made a lot of friends from the NHL and other world wide athletes." I said.

"Oh, do you know Sidney?" He questioned, quite happily.

"I had dinner with him, Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin and their girlfriends." I answered awkwardly. "I guess you could say I was the third wheel with Sidney, we ended up going out for a few after." I softly laughed, and my mom nudged me informing for me to act more lady-like.

"Same old Mavel." Kris spoke with a grin.

* * *

"It's alright, I'll pay the bill. I haven't really been around the last few years, it's the least I could do." I said smiling nicely to Kristopher who obliged and went out to meet his girlfriend.

I went outside to hear two arguing, I looked over casually to see Catherine getting angry at Kris.

"Kris, you knew we had that social to attend tonight!" She yelled.

"Well what was I supposed to do, Cathy? I haven't seen my best friend in years, she hated me. She wouldn't talk to me. This is the first time in years I got to talk to her." He replied.

"Why won''t you just tell me what happened between you two?" She yelled yet again.

"Because, because, she was my everything."

She was quiet for a while, they both were. I did hear one last thing before I stopped eaves-dropping. "Well until you find out where your head belongs, you can walk home."

I walked around the corner to see him standing there, staring at nothing. He glanced over at me, he was so unalive.

"Mavel, you didn't hear that did you?" He asked nervously.

"Hear what?" I lied.

"It was nice seeing you." He said coldly before walking off.

I sat there looking outside as it poured rain. It was so pretty, but yet very ugly. I stared down at the screen of my phone. My screen saver was always dearest to me, because of the most beautiful picture I could have ever seen.

I heard someones footsteps come up the stairs, and I turned around to see Magnon with Tristan trailing along. They were always meant to be together, they were the cutest couple ever imagined. They got together a year after she went to the university in Saskatoon and he went to the WHL to become a Saskatoon Blade.

"Mavel, looking and keeping that picture doesn't help you get over both of them." Magnon pleaded.

"I know, but I just can't. I'm not ready." I answered.

"Well I guess we can't rush you, but don't you think he deserves to know. Or atleast your mother, maybe his mom." Tristan offered, but failed.

"Not while he's with his girlfriend, it would ruin their relationship." I said, knowing that they weren't necessarily the happiest couple in the world at the moment.

"Well, do you want to see a movie with Belle and Elliot and Me and Tristan?" Magnon asked.

"No, I'm fine. It sounds like a couples date anyways, plus I'm having a head ache. The joys of suffering a concussion." I joked.

"Well, alright then." Tristan said before walking out of the room with Magnon.

* * *

I walked up to the stool to take a seat. I glanced over to see Kristopher. Why must this damn city of Montreal be so fucking small, I thought to myself.

"Mavel, stalking me are you?" He joked before taking a sip of his drink, alcoholic drink to be specific.

"Nope, just numbing the pain of my knee. Highland Park Scotch, please." I said speaking to Kris, then to the bartender.

"Damn, I didn't think you were a heavy drinker." He seemed impressed, which wasn't a great thing.

"Yeah, but you also haven't seen me since we were teenagers. When we were teenagers I didn't drink, remember? But I know you did." I spoke with a huge grin whipping across my face, and he rolled his eyes.

"Whatever. So back in Sweden, did you have a boyfriend or have you never found someone better than me?" He joked bringing out his asshole side causing me to laugh.

"Actually I did, he plays hockey, defensemen. I am positive he is better than you though. Funny thing is, he's two years younger than us." I retorted, just out of my own joy.

He laughed, "So you baby sat him?"

"I don't know, I felt like I had to babysit you Mr. Immature. Want to know another cool fact?" I questioned.

"Shut up, but go ahead tell me." He spoke.

"He was actually drafted in the first round." I chuckled.

"Oh you went there!" He faked being hurt.

"Yes, I did." I said very proud, but knowing I was joking he laughed.

It had been nearly two hours of talking and catching up. I looked at my phone to check the time, I found myself staring at my screensaver. I glanced at Kristopher, then the picture. It made me want to break down all over again.

"What's wrong?" He asked.

"Uh, I-I, nothing." I managed to speak out.

"Hm, alright."

I tried changing the subject, "So where is Catherine?" Me being a little drunk and not remembering brought up the saddened topic.

"We had an argument after the dinner we had, she kind of left me. We've been having a little bit of problems the past month anyway. I came here because she took her stuff from the house and left." He spoke as he chugged down the rest of his beer.

"Well, I'm sorry. She doesn't know what she's missing out on." I attempted to comfort him.

"You don't have to lie, I treated you like shit." He harshly said.

"I got over it." That was a lie, I thought to myself.

"I'm sorry for all of that bullshit." He apologized.

"It's fine, but hey, I better get back to my mom's. Evander is supposed to be coming tomorrow morning." I said getting up.

"Yeah, I better get going back to my place too. Want to share a cab?" He asked, and I nodded.

Kristopher Letang's POV

"Well goodnight, Mave." I said with a slight slur as she laughed at me and said the same back before closing the car door.

As we drove off I seen her phone on the seat. I just shoved it into my pocket.

Finally, the cab driver got to my house. I paid him and went up to unlock my door. I kicked off my shoes at the door and headed to my room. I took everything out of my pocket and threw it on the nightstand. I heard my phone vibrating, well what I thought was my phone. I picked it up and unlocked the phone to see a text from Elliot Stefan.

I opened it and read: Lol mazey, you lied to trist and magnon! Holls was telling me she saw you at Astro's with someone. So much for headaches eh hahaha well the group is going out for dinner and you and your brother are coming!

Reading that made me quilty. I was snooping on her phone, and I haven't talked to Elliot in forever. He tried to make plans with me, but I was busy and so was he. In fact, I haven't seen any of them in forever. I kind of let them fame and popularity go.

I shut the message and her phone returned to the main screen. I stared at her background, it was a girl in a hospital bed holding a child. She had the brightest smile. I had a hard time telling who it was. It did remind me of Mave, but she didn't have a child. She was in Sweden playing strictly hockey.

I put the phone down realizing once again that I shouldn't be looking at her phone. I tried to get the picture out of my head, but it wasn't working. It was really on my mind and kind of sobered me up in a strange way.

I better give her phone back in the morning, I sighed as I thought to myself.

* * *

I stared at the familiar door before knocking. I then noticed Nicole, Mave's mom opening the door. She politely smiled and invited me in.

"Mavel is in the backyard," She said as she ushered me to the back.

I seen Mavel poolside as she was on her laptop to what I assumed, working. I just walked towards her as she had her eyes glued to the screen.

"Uh, hi." I awkwardly said.

"Oh Kris, what are you doing here?" She asked.

"Returning your cellphone, you left it in the cab." I grinned while putting it on the table.

"Oh my god, thank you. I thought I had it with me and I was looking through everything for it. Can't afford another one, you know? Now that I'm jobless." She joked with a charming smile.

I laughed, "Yeah understandable."

"Well thanks again," She spoke.

"No problem." I said before walking off, but stopping in my tracks and turning around. I had something on my mind that I really wanted to ask. "Um, Mavel can I ask you something?"

"Yeah sure."

"Who's that on your phone screen saver?" I nervously asked unaware of what her reaction would be to my curiosity.

She was quiet, and stared into my eyes. I haven't seen her like this, ever. I looked down at my feet feeling guilty. I thought she was going to get mad.

"Do you really want to know, Kristopher?" She finally spoke.

"If you really want me to know." I said being a little quirky, which wasn't the most appropiate time.

"That was my son." What.

That couldn't have been her child. She was playing hockey, and she was in Sweden. It couldn't have been her. I was confused, I was quiet, I was lost. I wanted to know where that boy was now, why wasn't he with her? Had that boy been taken away from her?

"Who's the father?" I asked steadily, and with whole seriousness. She sighed and buried her face in her hands. I think she was crying, I couldn't tell.

Tears were streaming down her cheeks, "K-Kristopher, you were t-the father."

So many thoughts ran through my head.

I know you probably don't want to do both, but I really liked this story! Hopefully you can get back to it eventually!
I think you should do it on the Oilers. There are so many fics on the Pens, and not many on the Oilers! :)
Can't wait to read it!
