If We've Got No Place To Go..
My Best Friend
Tyler was really weird in practice today. He couldn't wipe that dumb smile off his face. I sat in my stall after morning practice and slowly, painfully removed my gear. Practice was killer today and we were all feeling it. Jordan was going around interviewing players for a pre game press release.
I was removing my Under Armour when I heard her relaxing voice say "Oh Captain, My Captain!" I couldn't help but smile when she did that; it had started ever since I was named team captain a few months ago in the summertime. "Yeah, sweetie?" I said, pulling on a t-shirt. "How are you preparing to be game ready against the Red Wings?" "Well, practice was pretty intense. We worked a lot on cramming the net and our defensive skills." She took a second to finish writing a couple things down. "Outside of practice, is there anything you do to mentally or physically prepare?" Jordan smiled up at me. "Besides a good nap, not much." She rolled her eyes. "Thanks, very descriptive and elaborate." "You know I'm all about that." I winked at her. "Have a good game, Benny." She grinned. "Thanks, cupcake." I laughed. Jordan stuck her tongue out at me and walked off.
I was changed and heading out when I felt eyes on me. I turned around and Seguin was walking behind me. "Hey Segs, what's up?" "Nothing much, I was thinking about getting some lunch. You in?" "Sure; is that all you wanted?" "What were you and Jordan talking about?" I laughed. "What do you think?" He looked down. "Yeah, I guess that was dumb." We walked in silence out to the parking lot. "Meet you at that Mexican place on 16th?" I asked. "See you there."
We got our food and I hadn't realized how hungry I was. Seguin kept giving me this funny look. Finally, through a mouth full of burrito, I said "What?!" "What do you think of Jordan?" I swallowed and said "She's sweet and really pretty. Why?" "You know the last night, after the game? When I took a rain check on post game dinner? Yeah, it was her." "You did not do her like one of those puck sluts, did you?" A little bit of a foreign feeling of protectiveness bubbled up in me. "No, no! She got hurt, slipped on some ice. I took her to Nikki, then home; but I didn't want to leave her alone.. So I slept on her couch."
I just stared at him. "Say something, dammit!" Tyler snapped. "Um, well..do you like her?" I managed to get out. "I don't freakin' know!" He seemed frustrated. This was not the attitude he needed going into a game with Detroit. "Look, just wait it out. Maybe talk to her later, or I can. I don't know what I'd say, but I'll try." "Thanks," Segs said. "Now look, I'm going to take a nap. You might want to as well. I'll see you later, alright?" "Thanks, again. I'll see you tonight." We paid and went our separate ways.
The whole way home I thought about what Seguin had told me. More than that, it surprised me how protective I had become. I've only known Jordan a few months but I feel very defensive of Jordan. Maybe I should talk to her..
