The Intern

Chapter Five

Cassie’s POV:
They say we’re supposed to get a Nor’Easter later today, but not until later tonight, so it’s a good thing we have an afternoon game today. I am a bit surprised when it starts to lightly snow on my way to the Garden. I’m hoping it’s just a passing shower and that the real heavy stuff won’t start until I am safe at home.
By the time I get to the Garden there is a good 1-2 inches of thick, heavy snow on the ground. I am now dreading going home, because if it keeps snowing like this, there’s no way I’m getting home using the T. They always shut down when we’re expecting a lot of snow like this. Knowing that Kyra and Alex are here, making sure I uphold my bet, I write my sign and show it to him during warm-ups. He smirks and I hope none of the other interns see it. I could get in trouble for this. I also send a text to him, just for my own little personal bet with myself.
Adam’s POV:
During warmups, I spy Cassie by the glass holding up a piece of paper. I skate by to see what it says. When I read it, I smirk. She must have been told to do that. There’s no way she’s that bold. Though I don’t exactly know what to think. I like her, and I think she likes me. But I don’t want to get in trouble and I don’t want her to lose her internship. This is so confusing. After warm-ups, we head into the dressing room to wait for the game to start. My phone’s light is blinking, indicating that I have a text.
Cassie: score a goal for me tonight ;)
Me: I’ll try :)
Now I know that she is flirting with me. But I have no idea what to think. I know nothing about girls and have no idea how to flirt back.
Cassie’s POV:
We win 4-2, with a goal coming from, of course, Mr. McQuaid. I don't know what to think. I'm pretty sure he scored that goal for me, which means Kyra and Alex were right. He does like me. I am happy for the win, but when I look outside, my fate is sealed. There is at least a foot of snow on the ground. I check my phone to see that I have received a text, confirming my earlier thoughts. The T is shut down, leaving me stranded at the Garden. I hear groaning coming from the stairs. I suspect it’s everyone who took the T in to the game finding out that they’re in the same boat as me. The cabs will have a lot of business tonight. Unfortunately for me, I have no cash on me and a cab ride to my apartment would cost at least $50. So my best bet is to get a ride from one of the guys. I head down to the concrete area, just outside the locker room. When I approach it, I spy the WAGs waiting for their significant others. I see Brittany, Milan’s girlfriend, talking to Krista, Andrew’s wife, and Tammy, Nathan’s wife. They don’t really see me as a threat to their men, so they’re fairly nice to me, engaging me in conversation once in a while.
“Hey guys,” I say, walking up to them. I’m closer to the WAGs than most interns. They find me pretty nice and I actually treat them with respect. But since I am an intern, I don’t hang out with them outside of the Garden. Otherwise it would be breaking the contract.
“Hey Cass. You get some good pictures?” Krista asks me. She’s always been the nicest of the three.
“Oh yeah. A ton. I got some great action shots of everyone. Then a lot of the crowd, since it’s towards the end of the season.
“Great. Hope to see them on the website.”
“They’ll be on mine, as well.”
“That’s right. How’s school going by the way?” asked Tammy.
“It’s good. Just started Spring semester. Say, who do you think would be willing to give me a ride? I’m kind of stranded here.”
“Oh yeah! I heard they shut down the T because of the weather.”
“Yup. And that’s exactly what I use to get to and from here.”
“Hmm…probably one of the younger, single guys. Andrew and I would, but we have to get home to the girls. They didn’t come this time,” Krista says.
“How are they?”
“They’re getting so big! I can’t believe how fast they grow.”
“I bet.”
“What ever you do, don’t take a ride of Segs or Marchy. They’re the worst drivers.”
“I’ll be sure to remember that,”I say as the boys begin to trickle out.
Most of the boys have left the Garden. There are only a few stragglers left. I’m starting to think I’m stuck here, when Seguin exits, sees me and makes a beeline over.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” he asks.
“Nothing. I’m just stuck here. The T is shut down.”
“I could give you a ride,” he says.
“Thanks but no thanks. I’ve heard stories about your and Marchy’s driving. I’ll pass.”
“Whohave you heard stories from?”
“Teammates, WAGs, other interns.”
“Fair enough. Let me know if you ever change your mind.”
“Will do, “I tell him as he leaves for his car. Great. I might just have to sleep in a hotel and wait until the storm is over. As I am accepting my defeat, Adam walks out. His hair is slightly damp and the curls are in full force. He must have just gotten out of the shower. His suit is a nice light gray and he’s wearing a light purple shirt and dark purple tie. I forgot they had to wear suits to all the games, home or away. Seeing my face, he walks over to me.
“What’s wrong?” he asks. I can barely get any words out.
“I-I’m kind of stuck here. They shut down the T and that’s the only way I can get home.”
“I can give you a ride. If you want,” he suggests.
“Really?” I say in disbelief.
“Sure. It’s no trouble really.”
“That would be great,” I say, picking up my bag off the ground. They have another game tomorrow night, so they don’t have to bring anything home with them. I pull on my winter hat and Adam does the same. He must’ve known it was going to snow. At least I know to keep a winter hat in my bag at all times. He starts to leave and I follow him out into the player’s lot. The snow crunches under my boots and I smile. He leads me to a black Ford Edge. He unlocks it and then heads over to the passenger side to open the door. I don’t know he’s coming, so he catches me with my mouth open and tongue sticking out, trying to catch the falling flakes. He looks amused so I stick my tongue out at him and he opens my door for me. Taken aback by this seemingly thoughtful gesture, I pause before getting in. He heads over to the driver’s side as I close the door. As he’s starting the car, he turns on the heat, but leaves the radio off. We head out of the lot and onto the street.
“So…do you live on campus?” he asks me.
“Yup. I share an apartment with my best friend. I’ve known here for 6 years. It’s great but also a challenge living with your best friend.”
“At least you have someone who knows what you’re going through.”
“That’s true. Do you have any roommates or are you one of the lucky ones without one?”
“Without for now. It gets lonely though. A lot of the guys have their wives, girlfriends, or roommates. I’m all by myself,” he says as the car slides a bit through the snow. It’s accumulating fast. I know I probably won’t make it home. The roads are getting really bad.
“You know what. Why don’t you just drop me off at a hotel. I don’t think either of us should be on the roads right now.”
Adam’s POV:
It is at this very moment that I get the craziest idea ever. One that could possibly get me in trouble and her to lose her internship.
“Why don’t you just stay at my apartment?”
“Won’t you get in trouble?”
“I might. But it’s cheaper than staying in a hotel. Besides, I’ll make us some food in the morning. We have a game tomorrow anyway. This way, you don’t have to go home to travel here the next day anyway.”
