Make It There

Pekka

I woke up in a nice, cozy, warm bed. I looked around, wondering where I was at and what had happened to me. Then everything rushed to me like a wave.
Bebe. Fight. Those kids. The robot. No more car. Blizzard. Wanting to die.
Right.
I laid in bed, looking at the wooden walls, dresser, and closet that was in front of me.
Then I got up and found clothes on the edge of the bed.
Nice.
I got dressed up and ready and walked down the narrow, wooden hallway, into the kitchen/living room.
There, I found a man with short, spiky blond hair, cooking on the stove. He must've felt my presence, because he turned around and looked at me.
"Ah, so you found the clothes! Good!" He flipped a pancake that was in the pan. "You had a good night sleep?"
"Yea, thanks."
"No problem."
I looked around, not knowing what to do next.
"You can go to the fridge and pull out the apple juice, if you want," the guy told me, reading my mind.
"Okay." I walked over to the fridge and pulled out a pitcher of apple juice. Then I walked around the countertop and placed it on the table, which was already set up.
"Hold up, I am almost done," the guy mumbled.
"Alright." I sat down. "You need anymore help?"
"Nope, I'm good." The guy walked over to the table, carrying two pans. He sild eggs and bacon on an empty plate in the middle and a batch of pancakes on another plate. He set the pans in the sink and sat down. "Let's eat!"
We began to eat quietly, not talking to each other. I would've been very uncomfortable, eating at some random dude's house, but I was starving, so I didn't really care.
"What's your name?" the guy asked me.
"Oh, ummm..." I swallowed down some bacon. "Tuukka. Tuukka Rask."
"Nice to meet you, Tuukka. I'm Pekka Rinne."
"You Finnish?"
"Yup. You?"
"Kyllä." (Yes.)
"Mahtava." (Awesome.)
"So..."
"Where do you live?" Pekka asked me.
"Errr...about two and a half hours from here."
"You walked the whole way?"
"No! Why would I?! That would be insane!"
"Oh. Well, I found you lying in the snow during a blizzard..."
"Oh yea, that..." I sighed. "My car was damaged badly, so I had to walk."
"Okay. Now I get it." Pekka ate a piece of a pancake.
"You live here all by yourself?"
"Yup." He frowned a bit.
"In the middle of nowhere?"
"Yup." Pekka looked a bit uncomfortable.
"You okay?" I looked at him weird look.
"Yea...It's just that I didn't live here all by myself at first..."
"Oh, who lived with you before?"
"My wife."
"Oh you're married! Nice."
"Yea..."
"Well..." I looked around the room. "Where is she?"
"Gone...I think."
"You think?"
Pekka sighed. "It's quite a long story."
"I'm up for a long story."
Pekka just stared at me.
"Well, I mean, if you don't want to tell it to me, then that's fine! You don't have to, I was just wondering--"
"No, no, it's fine." Pekka began to cut something on his plate. "I'll tell it to you."
"You sure?"
"Hm, hm."
"Okay..."
"It happened about four years ago, two years after I was married to my wife. Her name was Saga, and let me tell you, she was the most beautiful person on earth. Well, in my opinion, she is." Pekka chuckled at bit. "She always loved to fly. Not like a superhero or anything, but fly planes. Her father was a pilot, so that's where she got the love to fly. I've ridden with her before a few times and she's a good pilot, I can tell you that much. But there was always this dream she always had..."
"And...what was that?"
"To fly across the Pacific Ocean alone. I don't know why, but she wanted to. I told her not to because, y'know, it's dangerous. The biggest ocean in the world! Imagine, seeing roaring waves benath you, no land in sight for, I don't know, ten hours straight! It's crazy!
"But she told me that all of her other flights were successful and this one was gonna be like the other ones. She told me that she knew what she was doing and that she wouldn't do anything that would put her in danger. Her name means 'the seeing one' in Icelandic, so that's why she's named Saga: because she can see what's good and bad and avoid the bad situtations. I've always had believened that until..." Pekka bit his bottom lip.
"Until what?"
"Until she took off. Took off to achieve her dream. I remember her plane rising into the air, disappearing into the horizon of the ocean. It was evening and she told me before she hopped on that she was going to come back and call me when she lands on the other side of the ocean."
"So...did she make it?"
Pekka shrugged. "After that..." Worriness crossed his face. "...I never saw her ever since. Never had any signs that she made it...Heck, I don't even know if she's alive!"
"Oh..."
"People would tell me that she's dead after a year had gone by. But I think that she's still alive...She's the seeing one. I-I don't want to lose hope, but..." Tears began to stream down Pekka's face. "...it seems like she's...never gonna come b-back." Then he broke down just like that.
"Hey..." I got up and hugged Pekka the best I could. "I'm sorry that you had to tell that story--"
Pekka shook his head vigorously. "No, no..." He sniffed. "It's fine...I had to tell it someone one day..." He grabbed his napkin and wiped his eyes.
I stepped back and slid back into my chair.
It was quiet for a moment; I didn't know what to do next.
Pekka looked at me. I smiled at him. He smiled back at me, but then frowned.
"If she loves you..," I started, "she'll find a way back to you. Even if it takes a millennium."
Pekka nodded his head. "Because she's the seeing one."
"Yea." I smirked.
Pekka smiled. "Thanks."
"For what?"
"Putting up with me and my emotions."
"Oh, that fine." I shrugged.
"Thanks...again..." Pekka looked around. "Ugh, I gotta buy a clock to put on the walls."
"You don't know what time it is?"
"No...do you know what time it is?"
I dug into my pockets, looking for my phone. "Uhhh...I don't have my phone..."
"Oh, I got it." Pekka pulled out his phone and turned on the screen. "Oh my...I need to get going." He got up and walked over to the front door.
"Wait, where are you going?" I looked straight ahead, looking at Pekka.
"I need to meet with someone." He put on a gray coat. "Do you mind if you stay here?"
"Oh sure..."
"Okay thanks. This nice guy is gonna give a way better place to live."
"What's so bad about this house? It's nice."
"It's in the middle of nowhere. And he says that he knows where Saga's at."
I raised an eyebrow. "Oh really?"
"Yea."
"Do you know if she's alive?"
"No, I just told you that."
"But she's alive if this 'nice guy' knows where she's at--"
"Tuukka, if I have to go. We can talk about him later. Nähdään myöhemmin." (See you later.)
Then Pekka left the house.
