Rescue Me (Sidney Crosby)

Rescue Me (Sidney Crosby) 061:

Chapter Sixty One

“You’re not listening to me!” I growled as I looked at the police and tried to keep my cool because Josh was back in my arms.

“So how would you explain the poorly healed bullet wound on her left thigh, or the fact that your son- is he your son?”

“He’s Julie’s son, but he calls me ‘dad’,” I explained as Josh looked at the officers.

“Leave my daddy alone!” he yelled and I looked at him and pulled his face away from the officers.

“Let me handle this little man,” I explained and Josh whined and laid his head on my shoulder. I looked back over towards Marc and nudged my head for him to come over, “Josh, how ‘bout you go sit with Uncle Marc.”

“I wanna see mommy,” he cried and I nodded my head.

“Uncle Marc will bring you to her,” I said and then placed Josh on the ground and Marc picked him up and walked into Julie’s hospital room, patting my shoulder as he disappeared, “Look,” I said as I looked back towards the officers, “I don’t know why you were called, I told you what happened, we came home from Josh’s hockey practice, our dog jumped her, she fell back and hit her head on the edge of the counter, that’s it!”

“The bullet wound?” he asked and I gulped, but tried to remain cool.

“Happened before I met her, you’ll have to talk to her,” I lied, but managed to get the interrogation off of me for a moment.

“Why hasn’t her son been in any hospital records? When was the last time he went to the doctor?” the one officer asked and I sighed and rubbed my fingers through my hair. I looked back into the room to see that Julie was still asleep and Julie was crawling onto her bed, lying down next to her, “Mr. Crosby?”

“Eight years ago Julie was raped by a man named Kyle Mullery,” I started and the officers wrote stuff down, “She was pregnant with Josh and after he was born she ran away. Julie ran for seven years, Kyle would find her and hurt her, maybe that’s where the bullet wound came from,” I stated, blaming the wound on Kyle because if word got back to Boris about any of this, who knows what he would do, “She came to Pittsburgh in January thinking that she would be safe her. We met, everything was fine, Kyle followed, my teammates and I protected her and Josh-“

“I remember a report about this, something happened at your home?” the officer said and I nodded my head, “That was him? What was his name again?”

“Yes, and Kyle Mullery,” I said and then heard my phone go off, but I ignored it, “There was a trial in April I think, he was found guilty and Julie was placed with full custody of Josh.”

“That doesn’t explain why the kid never saw a doctor,” the one officer said.

“She was running for her and her son’s life, if he didn’t need to go to the doctors, would you risk yourself to be caught so easily?” I asked as I tried not to be an asshole, but come on, “Kyle had a private investigator following him, Greg something, I can’t remember his last name,” I said and then sighed and leaned against the wall.

“All right, we’ll be in contact, don’t leave the city, Mr. Crosby,” the one guys said and I looked at him wide eyed.

“Officers, I’m a hockey player, I have away games, one tomorrow might I add, I need to leave the city,” I stated and shoved my hands in my pockets to hide the fact that they were clenched and I wanted to punch these guys.

“How will we be in contact?”

“My cell phone, my Coach, the team manager,” I listed and the guys looked at me. I gave them all of the phone numbers and then saw a woman walk up to them.

“Officers,” she said and I looked at her and saw that she was dressed in a professional suit, “I’m Bailey Gordon from the Social Service Unit,” she said and then handed her card and I.D. to the officers.

“Ms. Gordon, Officer Hendricks,” the one said and then shook the woman’s hand.

“Where’s the little boy?”

“Wait?!” I said as I stood up straight and looked between the three, “What are you doing?”

“The boy’s mother is in the hospital and not able to care for the boy, there is no other immediate family in the area.”

“I’m family!” I said and I glared at the woman, “You’re not taking Josh.”

“I have to, at least until his mother wakes up,” the woman said and I growled.

“So what, the fact that he calls me ‘dad’ means nothing to you people?! You’re going to take him away from people that he knows and put him in some sketchy place and leave him there until Julie wakes up?”

“I’m sorry, it’s what’s needed to be done, I’m not the one who makes the rules,” she said and then walked into the room.

“No!”

“Easy there,” the officers said as the placed their hand on my shoulders and pushed me against the wall.

“What’s going on?” I heard Vero ask.

“NO!” Josh yelled and I bit my lip and tried to compose myself from punching these officers, “NO!!! GET OFF ME!!! MOMMY!!! DADDY!!!”

“Josh,” I said as I pushed the officers off of me and walked into the room to see that Josh was clinging onto the bed, not wanting to go with the woman.

“LET ME GO!!!” he yelled and I ran over towards him and picked him up, “Daddy!” Josh cried as he wrapped his arms around my neck and cried into my shoulder, “Don’t let them take me, don’t let them take me daddy!”

“It’s all right, little man!” I muttered as I rubbed his back and looked at the woman that wanted to take Josh away.

“I’m sorry, but with no immediate relatives in the area, I have to-“

“Julie’s family is in Texas! What if I call her parents up here? They can be here for tomorrow!” I stated as I held Josh close to me.

“That’ll be fine, but I need them to show I.D., but I still need to take Josh with me.”

“How is that fair?!” Vero yelled and Marc placed his hand on her arm, “He takes care of Josh, why would you take that away from them! Josh had been through so much-“

“Yes, I’ve read his final from when he was evaluated from the psychologist during the Mullery trial,” the woman stated and I glared at her.

“So don’t you see that it’s not right to put Josh in some shelter home?!” Vero barked as she walked over and stood in front of me, “Julie will wake up in a few hours! Why would you take him away from her?! From Sidney?!”

“Because it’s my job, it’s not fun and it’s not easy, but it’s something I have to do,” she barked back and I took a step back, “Now please let go of the boy, Mr. Crosby or I’ll have these officers arrest you.”

“Marc,” I said and then pulled my phone out of my back pocket, “Call Julie’s parents and tell them what’s going on, get them tickets, I’ll buy,” I said and then took my wallet out and handed him my credit card, “Just get them here.”

“Sid, what are you-“

“I have to,” I muttered and he nodded his head and I looked back at the woman, “Where’s your car?” I growled and she nodded her head.

“No!” Josh cried and I rubbed his back.

“It’s all right little man, it’s only for a little bit, your gram and pop will be up and everything will be taken care of,” I said as I tried to calm him down, but I knew it wasn’t going to work.

“Follow me,” the woman said and I sighed and nodded my head.

Vero decided that she was going to come with me, and I was kind of happy that she did, I was going to need her help once I put Josh in the car.

“NO! NO! NO! DON’T!!” Josh yelled as I tried to pull him off of me and put him in the car, but he wouldn’t let go, and it was tearing me up inside.

I bent down and glared up at the woman, but then looked down towards Josh, “Hey, hey, little man, look at me,” I said as I grabbed Josh’s face and looked at him, “Look at me, Josh,” he shook his head and I sighed, “Where’s my superstar?”

“Daddy, don’t let her take me,” he cried and I felt my eyes tear up.

“Hey Josh,” Vero said as she bent down next to me, “You have to go in the car, but we called your grandparents, and they come and get you, and watch after you.”

“Why can’t daddy?”

“Because I’m not legally your dad,” I muttered and placed my hand on his shoulder.

“Well be it,” he said and I nodded my head.

“I’m gunna talk to your mommy when she wakes up, it’ll only be a few more hours, a day tops, but you need to be strong and wait for us Josh,” I said and he rubbed his eyes, “You need to be a brave man and go with this lady, she’s gunna take you somewhere where you can wait for us.”

“But I don’t wanna go,” he cried and I looked up to try to hold my tears back and then pulled him in for a hug.

“You have to, don’t give up on me, I’m gunna get you out of this,” I said as I looked at Josh and he nodded his head, “I love you, Josh.”

“Love you too, daddy,” he said and I kissed his head and placed him inside the car.

“This is my card,” the woman said as she held out the card and Vero grabbed it because I didn’t want to look away from Josh, “Call me when the grandparents are in.”

“You take care of him!” I growled and she nodded her head.

“This isn’t my first rodeo, Mr. Crosby.”

“Don’t care, this is MY kid, you take care of him, he’s been through too much already,” I hissed as she got in the car and drove off.

Vero had to hold my arm because I wanted to run after the car when I saw Josh’s face pop up through the back window and he yelled for me. When they were out of sight I bent down and placed my hands over my face and held back the tears, trying to stay strong.

“It’ll be all right, Sid, we’ll get them here,” Vero said as I ran my fingers through my hair stood up.

I took a deep breath and then rubbed my face, “Julie is gunna kill me.”
