Breaking the Ice

Deux

“It’s starting!” I heard Sidney call from the living room. “Shit, shit, shit.” I said quietly to myself while carefully running out of the kitchen with a tray of buffalo chicken dip and hot wings in my hands.

It was December and I had a couple of the boys over to hang out and watch my special on Root Sports. We were in the midst of a lockout and didn’t have much else to do outside of informal practice. The guys were talking and playing Battlefield 3 while I slaved away in the kitchen like usual. The guys were at MY place also as usual. I guess since I’m located downtown and have a pretty bomb view of the city.

I set the food down on the glass coffee table. We’d all had a few beers each as the sun set. The days were getting much shorter and it was nearly dark at barely 5pm. I looked at both sofas and it just so happened I had nowhere to sit.

“You guys come to my place and don’t even leave me a seat.” I say staring at them with my hands on my hips. I eye Sid, Geno , and Nealer since they had the best seats in the house. They tried their best to scoot close enough together so I could sit, but I looked at the 4 inches between Geno and James.

“Ugh, move you’re in the way.” James said grabbing my waist and pulling me onto his lap.

“Well damn Nealer, close your legs. I don’t want to feel your dick” I scoffed throwing my legs over Geno’s lap. The guys let out a roar of laughter and I kissed James on the cheek, apologetically. His hot, red, embarrassed cheek.

Duper Shhhed us as the special started.

Dan Potash stands in front of the Consol Energy Center:

In this ever-changing game we always tell ourselves to expect the unexpected, but this time the newest member of the Penguins roster is someone nobody saw coming.

Twenty-four year old Melissa Quaye is the first woman to play in the National Hockey League. That within itself is a mighty feat considering she never played the sport until she was 21. Some have chalked it up to performance enhancing drugs or some sort of magic, but according to her it’s all hard work.

On the Root Sports set:

“Yeah, I never grew up around the rinks. I played volleyball and basketball growing up. I was a cheerleader for a while and played tennis in high school. Sometimes I don’t feel like I deserve this, but they chose me, so I guess that means something.”

It was big news when the Quaye broke into the minor leagues a year ago. It was even bigger news when scouts suggested she be offered a permanent position on the roster. Before making the AHL team, Quaye played in a women’s league here in Pittsburgh. When asked about what city to put next to her name on the roster Quaye often has trouble picking just one hometown.

“I was born in New Jersey and spent my childhood in Virginia and Texas with a brief stint in Arkansas. I moved to Pittsburgh for college and it’s nice to be able to play here too. I lived in Texas the longest, but I hated the place so I guess I'm not really sure where my allegiances lie.”

Shot of Melissa walking down the Hallway wearing a tight knee-length cobalt dress.

(voice over)
“I got a call from Mario Lemieux after my first 10 games or so in Wilkes-Barre. He called me in for an interview of sorts. He flew me to Pittsburgh and basically asked how I felt being the only woman on the team. He really seemed interested. He asked if I showered with the guys, if I felt comfortable taking hits and all of that. I suppose I did well enough to get a call-up the next day.”

“Hot damn!” Brandon Sutter said during the scene I was walking down the hallway in my favorite blue dress. I glared at him and threw a Pita chip at his head.

In the Penguins locker room:

How do you think you were received by your teammates?

“Nobody ever said anything to my face at least. They all knew bout me playing for Wilkes-Barre so I guess they weren’t too surprised. Everyone was nice enough, but I know it was awkward. When I walked in for my first practice I tried to be really polite. I was really nervous that someone would be upset about it. I think that Mario had a talk with the guys, but they won't admit it. I knew I would have to prove myself and I think I have. We’re pretty close now-”

All of a sudden the power went out. Everyone in the room groaned.

“Damn. I guess I’ll find some candles.” I said getting off James’ lap.

“I come too” Geno said following me. I reached back for his hand and he grabbed it. His warm calloused fingers laced with mine.

“I think there are some in my room” I said touching the wall every couple steps I took. It was pitch black and I was paranoid of someone stepping on my dog Lucky.

“For when you have….company?” Geno laughed.

“Maybe,” I replied while pushing my bedroom door open. I found a few candle sticks and some big glass ones. I lit a couple to guide us back downstairs.

“You want us to leave?” Tanger asked running his hand through his hair.

“You don’t have to. We can…find something to do I guess.”

“Like what?” Neal frowned.
