The One Night That Changed My Life Forever

The One Night, That Changed My Life Forever

5 years later
"Mom, I'm going to Matt's after school." Sam yelled on his way out the door.
"Text me when you get there and if you need a ride, ok?" I said running out to give him a kiss knowing it would embarrass him.
"Ew, mom don't!" He said wiping away all my "mommy germs" and running out to catch the school bus.
"Bella, I'm just going to grab your brother and then we'll get you to school, ok?"
"Ok mom." She said looking up from her colouring book.
"Now for the stubborn one." I muttered climbing up the stairs into not so mini me's room.
"Hey there mister I said grab your stuff and get ready for school, lie on your bed and take a nap."
"I don't wanna go to school." He said pouting.
"Sorry sweetie but I didn't make you go when you were four. Plus kindergarten is tons of fun."
"Hmmfffph." He pouted.
"Don't make me tell daddy." I said putting a serious look on my face.
"Fine." He grumbled rushing past me and down the stairs. I grabbed their bags and followed them out to the SUV.
"Be good ok kids." I said waving goodbye after leaving them with their teachers. "Now for a little me time." I said driving to our second home.
"Rachel." The security guard grinned and tipped his hat.
"Hey." I said smiling before making my way out to the stands to watch the guys practice. Did I miss hockey? Of course, but if there is anything that makes it worth giving up, its my family. A puck hitting the boards brought me back out of my wandering thoughts. I smiled and waved at the guys, and obliged when they waved me down to the bench.
"So how'd they look?" Joel asked when I emerged onto the bench.
"Pretty good, but the hubby is looking a bit slow out there." I said smirking.
"I'm old, take it easy on me." Pat said pouting.
"I just got rid of one pouting Patrick, please do not make me have to deal with another." I said rolling my eyes.
"Did they give you much trouble?"
"Nothing I can't handle." I said shaking my head no.
"So when will you be joining us back out on the ice?" Joel asked.
"For practice right?" I asked laughing.
"I have chosen to remain positive that you come out of retirement, but sure practice is a start." He said chuckling.
"Well I'm a bit hesitant going out there like this." I said gesturing to myself. "But maybe in a month or so." I said nodding.
"You miss it don't you?"
"Every day, for the past eight months." I said agreeing. "But I get to see my kids off to school every morning, help them with their homework, and put them to bed at night. Thats something I can't imagine giving up again."
"Even for another cup?" He asked jokingly.
"Nah. Two is enough for me. Plus Pat's won enough to last forever." I said laughing "The lights are back on him."
"Well it was nice seeing you again, I'd better get back to practice." Joel said patting my shoulder before blowing the whistle and changing up the drills. After a few more minutes I made my way back to the house and awaited the return of my children and my husband.

"We're home!" Pat exclaimed coming through the door with Isabella and Patrick in tow, backpacks in hand.
"Mommy! Guess what!! Guess what!" Patrick exclaimed a huge grin plastered on his face.
"What?" I asked chuckling.
"I have a girlfriend." He whispered shyly into my ear.
"You do?" I exclaimed. "I have to meet this girl that stole my girls heart, does she have a name?" Patrick chuckled in the background, I looked over questioningly.
"Go on buddy, whats her name?" Pat said nudging our youngest son.
"Lauren." I looked up at Pat, asking the question with my eyes.
"Oh yes the one and only." He said laughing.
"He's your son." I said shaking my head laughing. "That's great news." I said ruffling Patrick's hair before he ran off to watch TV.
"I call, calling Jon." I said snatching up my phone and dialling in his number. Pat and I were still laughing when Jon picked up the phone.
"It's not funny." Jon said before we could even say anything.
"What's not funny?" I asked in a semi serious tone.
"I'm shooting myself for ever letting you guys convince me to put my kids in the same school as yours."
"Hey." We both said.
"Well he better not turn into his father and break my girls heart." Jon said laughing but being completely serious.
"Yeah, yeah. We should get everyone together and have a playdate. Date Jonny." I said laughing.
"Ugh she won't stop talking about him, I have a feeling I'm going to hear about him an awful lot for the next fifteen years or so."
… if only Jon knew how true those words were…
"The first one's off eh?" Pat said squeezing my hand from the seat beside me.
"Crazy isn't it." I said looking around. "Remember when this was us?" I asked chuckling.
"Seems like it was yesterday. That was a good day." He said smiling.
"It was a day I will never forget." I said winking.
"Minus the fact you had forgotten it for almost two years."
"Pffttt. Remembering it is all that matters. You gave Sam the letter from his mom right?"
"Yeah. We just came back from seeing her. He wanted to get her blessing one last time."
"I wish she could have been here." I said sadly.
"We all do."
"She passed on too soon, I wish we had known she was sick sooner."
"It's what she wanted, and look at our son up there." He whispered grinning.
"He's pretty handsome looking." I agreed chuckling.
"He looks nervous as hell." Pat said grinning.
"And you weren't?" I asked
"Touché. But once he pronounced you may now kiss the bride, it was all worth it."
"Oh my goodness." I said squeezing his hand again. "She's beautiful, my little boy all grown up."
That day Samuel Kane married his fiancé Marissa. The ceremony was beautiful, and everything a mother could wish upon her child. Sam didn't quite become a hockey player like his dad, but he was always around it. He instead got a job as a trainer for the Hawks, and continued the Kane name within the UC.

"What ya thinking about baby girl?" I asked Bella who was fidgeting around with her dress, however a lingering smile on her face.
"The first day we invited Carter over to hang out. Who would have known?"
"Well your father and I saw it, and I know his parents did as well." I said chuckling.
"We were pretty inseparable as kids huh?" She said laughing.
"Completely. Now stop fidgeting. You look beautiful, and that boy is lucky to have you." I said placing my hands on her shoulders and calming her racing thoughts.
"Thanks mom, I love you." She said giving me a hug. "Now get out of here before you make me cry," She said shooing me out of the room.
"How is she?" Pat asked as I sat down beside him. "Nervous, but absolutely beautiful."
"Did I hear something about my future daughter in law being beautiful?" Brent said sitting down on the other side of me.
"Haha maybe." Pat said chuckling. "This is it man."
"Only took them 20 years to figure it out."
" Pftt I mean we figured it out in like twenty minutes right?" Pat said laughing.
"Never thought this team would be this connected. That boy of yours still harassing the beautiful Toews girl?"
"Would he be my son if he wasn't?" Pat asked laughing.
"Good point." Brent said while we all shared a laugh.
"Do you think they'll be the next one of the kids to go?" Dayna asked.
"It's a toss up. I think Duncan's kid will probably get married before they do. Knowing Patrick he'll do something stupid and have to push the idea of marriage even further back." I said.
"Hey." Pat said.
"Patrick can you honestly tell me anything different?" I looked over at him.
"Right now, no. But he'll grow up, trust me I know."
"Speaking of." I said as the two walked in hand in hand and took the seats beside Pat.
"We know, we know. The plane was delayed." He said taking off his and Lauren's jackets and folding them off to the side.
"No worries. How are you guys?"
"Good thanks." Hey both replied cheerfully, almost too much so.
"We'll talk more after the ceremony." I said focusing my attention back on my eldest daughter walking down the aisle.
"Enjoy your honeymoon." I said hugging my daughter. "And don't get too caught up in that Seabrook life, don't forget about us." I said laughing as she happily left with the love of her life. Two weddings down, now for the hockey players of the family.

"He did what?" Jon said looking between the two of us wide eyed.
"Oh we know." Pat and I said nodding.
"He better not do anything stupid from here on in."
"Nah. I think he's serious about this Jonny." I said trying to reassure him.
"He better damn well be. "

"Number three." Pat said smiling.
"Number three and number one." I said bouncing the sleeping girl in my arms.
"Ms. Alyssa Toews- Kane, soon to be Kane." Pat said nodding.
"See Jonny, all good." I said leaning into his shoulder.
"He's a good kid." Jon said grinning.
"She is too." We said smiling at the scene unfolding before us.
"Welcome into the family Lauren." I said giving her a hug, and her baby girl back.
"Thanks Rach." She said, giving her girl a good bye kiss before saying goodbye to the rest of the family and following our youngest son out the door to their transportation to the airport.
"Why the hell didn't the Hawks draft him?" Jon huffed.
"They're only a few hours away."
"But still. He's winning cups for Dallas and not the Hawks, something is definitely wrong."
"I second that." Pat said.
"Third." I said nodding. "Someday."
And after the birth of his second daughter he got that call, and bravely took on the legacy his father had left behind in his wake (in Kane fashion of course).

"Ah Savvy, you're home." I said running to great my youngest daughter.
"Yes, the season is over. One year of school down, only three more to go."
"You're making your dad proud." I said smiling.
"Yeah?"
"Of course. Me too as well." I said giving her another hug and taking some of her bags out of her hands. "So tell me, any guys I should know about before your father gets home?"
"Well, there's a new transfer in named Owen. We've hung out a few times, he's really nice."
"Hockey player?"
"Would I date him if he wasn't?"
"Who?" Pat said walking in.
"Owen." I said grinning.
"Ah my lil Savannah finally in luvvvve?" Pat said trying to be cool.
"No. We've only known each other for like five months."
"Heck, I fell in love with Rach in like two weeks." He said laughing. "So when do I get to meet this terribly lucky kid?"
"Well I'm glad you asked, because I kinda told him I'd pick him up at the airport later on this afternoon." She said innocently.
"We've got plenty of room, it's all good." I said chuckling.

"Mom, Dad. Owen's here." Savvy said walking through the door three hours later.
"Ah finally I get to meet…" Pat didn't finish his sentence.
"What's up?" I asked walking towards the group.
"Rachel meet Owen." Pat said gesturing to a very, very familiar face.
"Ahah I see." I said chuckling. "You kids get settled in. Owen does your dad know you're here?"
"Maybe… kinda. I told him I'd be home a week late." He said shrugging.
"It's not a big deal if he knows then?"
"Nah. But is it ok if Savvy comes back home with me for a couple weeks? So I can show her where I grew up."
"If you promise to look out for her I have no problem with it. Plus I know your dad." Pat said chuckling.
"It's an ok from me too." I said nodding. "Now get up there." I said laughing.
"Oh goodness." I sighed looking at Pat.
" Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy."
"This one is all on you." I said laughing and pointing at Pat.
"Not my fault she followed in your steps and picked the bad boy."
"How did this happen? All our kids but one married or are dating hockey kids."
"I think this one was by chance. I mean she's never met him when his dad and I have hung out."
"This is one call you get to make." I said serious.
"I think this one deserves a skype call." Pat said opening up the computer.
"You texted them?"
"Yeah, they'll be on in a minute."
"Mhmm." I said clicking on the video call that had popped up on our screens.
"Look at us old folks using our technology. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"What can't one of your oldest pals just call out of the blue for no reason?" Pat asked.
"Not you." He said laughing. "So drop it on me, what's the news?"
"Oh we just had a quick question." I said.
"Mhmm…"
"Where does your son go to school?" When he said the same one as our daughter Pat and I shared a knowing look.
"Mhmm, and when is his season done?"
"A couple weeks I'm pretty sure he told me… why?" He asked confused.
"Well the season ended this past weekend for all schools."
"Where the hell is he then?! He better not be messing around like my stupid ass did when I was younger. Where does your girl go to school again? It's somewhere up that way no?"
"Same school." Pat said nodding.
"Soooo… other than telling me my son lied to me about his whereabouts what's up?"
"That's our cue to ditch this convo, here's Savvy." We said running away from the computer and into the living room where Owen was sitting on the couch.
"What's on your mind son?" Pat asked taking a seat beside him on the couch.
"Well to be honest I was really worried about meeting you guys, and you not liking me, because Mr. Kane to be simple I really like your daughter, maybe even love her and I'm nervous as hell to get your permission to date her."
"Again, as long as you love and take care of her we will have no problems. Plus I'd be more worried about what I can get your dad to do if you mess up." Pat said chuckling. "Me I'm just a small guy."
"You don't have to be worried Mr. Kane, or Mrs. Kane."
"Oh puh-lease call us Rachel and Patrick, no need to feel that old quite yet."
"We are old." Pat said laughing.
"Shush." I said hitting him lightly on the arm. "So Owen what would you like for dinner?"
"Seriously you guys have no questions or issues with me dating your daughter?"
"Nah. We've been through this before. You seem like a great kid, talented too so as long as you don't do something that hurts our baby girl, we have no problem whatsoever. Steak good?"
"Perfect." He said seemingly more relaxed than he had been fifteen minutes ago.
"Now go talk to your father before he blows a fuse worrying about where you are." I said shooing him into the office.
~I did not see that one coming. Pat said reading out the text.
~You didn't? Do you think we did?

~True. Make sure he's a good guest, don't be afraid to rough him around a bit if needed.

~ Same to you in a week. We'll have to get everyone together some time this summer.

~ We're in. Go enjoy your steak. Officially jealous of my boy. It's been a while since I've experienced a Kane grilled steak.

~ Alright. Talk to you soon.

Almost 4 years later
"Last one." Pat said as we sat in the front row for the last of our kid's weddings.
"How'd these two end up together?" Pat said shaking his head.
"Obviously its my irresistible good looks being passed on to him. I mean look at the pair of them." Tyler said laughing.
"Your looks my ass. He's all your wife's. I mean she's the one with the looks right?" Pat said smirking.
"Oh we're going to go there eh? It's very true though, our wives both passed on the attractive genes to our kids. We just passed on the hockey, well atleast I did. Your wife might have passed on the talent and the good looks…."
"You are such a suck up." I said shaking my head at him. "So one more kid Jord?"
"One more that's the plan right Ty?"
"Three's a good number yeah, but if another were to magically be created I wouldn't be too upset…" He said grinning.
"Magically.. you're such a goof." I said laughing. "Has it been a good pregnancy so far?"
"Yeah, we're just to the kicking stage so its a bit uncomfortable, but up until now the morning sickness has been kept to a minimum. I think this will be the last one my body will allow to be honest."
"Oh I know that feeling. But like Ty said you totally have the opportunity for another. Our first came fairly early and my last was still when I was older than you."
"We'll see." She said laughing. "This one's enough for now."
"Well all our grandkids should have wicked hockey skills." I said laughing.
"No more kids for you guys then?" Jordan asked.
"Nah. My body is actually done. Plus we are in the time of grandchildren. I'm far too old to go through that whole process again." I said laughing.
"Four's a good number eh?" Pat said nodding. "Plus mate this is our last one getting married and only your first."
"You guys started earlier than us, plus our one is adamant about waiting it out as long as possible."
"She's still working eh?"
"You got it. Traveling is her life right now, but she'll settle down soon enough. At least we hope." He said laughing.
"I want atleast one grandkid from her." Jord said laughing.
"What about these two?" I said wiggling my eyebrows.
"I don't think there's any way their kids can not be beautiful hockey players." Tyler said.
"I think it will happen soon, but not that soon. They both have hockey so it will be up to Savvy, and when she's willing to take time off from the season." Jordan said.
"Yeah, I personally think it's going to be a slip up." Pat said shrugging. "It happened to us twice and that's when we wanted to focus on your blossoming career." Pat said pointing at me.
"Is it just me, or like 20 years ago could you have ever of seen us sitting here talking about our kids having kids?" Ty asked.
"Well I sure as hell didn't see you in the picture." Pat said slugging him lightly on the arm.
"I'm glad we grew up." Ty said wrapping his arm around his wife.
"Me too, Me too." Pat agreed.
I nodded my head as well. "Yes, thank goodness."
"My wife the ex-party animal." Pat said laughing.
"Oh?" Ty asked amused.
"Well, I wasn't as bad as you two…" I said looking in-between the two of them.
"That is probably true." Ty said laughing. "We were a pretty killer duo though."
"I remember my parents telling me to stay away, but it was just too damn late." I said laughing. "Look how wrong she was, right ma?" I asked twisting around to the row behind us.
"Yeah, yeah." She said shaking her head. "Turn around and face the front." She said sticking her tongue out and shooing me away with he hands.
"You just got told by your mother." Tyler whispered in my ear.
"I'm well aware dumbass." I whispered back and followed my mother's orders as the music began playing, and the ceremony ran its course.
"Patrick do you realize how connected we are now to the NHL?"
"What you mean, Segs? Seabs? and Toes? Yes I was well aware." He said laughing, as we danced.
"We could have some killer family reunions." I said resting my head on his shoulder.
"We are going to have to do something. All the kids have moved on."
"Mmmmm. Lets travel, we didn't get to do much after Bella came." I said smiling into his neck.
"Season tickets to the Hawks games of course." Pat added with a chuckle.
"Of course. After all there still is a Kane dominating the ice there. Let's just be here for the kids when they need us, we have time to see everyone."
"Drink beer by the poolside with Jonny and the guys." Pat said nodding.
"Watch far too many sports."
'We'll find something to do." Pat said laughing. "Just no more dang kids."
"Agreed. I can make sure that can be arranged with one trip to the doctors."
"We did pretty good didn't we?"
"We did." I said smiling up at him and giving him a quick kiss. Looking back at our lives and how we had ended up here.
"What are you thinking about?"
"The night we met."
"The one night that changed my life forever." He replied smiling down at me, his eyes reflecting a life full of love.
"The one night that changed my life forever." I answered back. Patrick had not only changed my life, he became my life. One night, one drink, and two souls finding their other half.
"One night." I whispered into his chest.
"One."

Great job

Amazing job. Wasn't expecting him to have another kid from a different relationship in this story. Kudos for them for not resenting each other or the kid though. Great job
