Olympic Break

Jeff

Jeff
"Hello?" He answered his phone.
His hands shook. He'd been waiting all day to receive a call from the Team Canada representatives. He didn't know who was on the phone, due to the rush he got hearing his phone ring lacking in his caller ID check, but he was nervous.
"Hello, Jeff?" The voice spoke.
"Speaking." He replied.
"I'm calling for the Canadian Olympic Men's Team." The man paused.
Jeff's stomach flipped. He'd been waiting for this call, and here it was. He took a deep breath, waiting for the man to continue. He saw his teammates looking amongst each other. They knew it was the call Jeff had been waiting for.
"We won’t be naming you to the team. Thanks for your hard work and keep up the good work." The man added.
Jeff felt his stomach drop. He fought the urge to frown, keeping the same smile on his face as usual. He nodded.
"Thank you." He said, before ending the call.
He looked down at his phone, still smiling. He peeked up and saw his teammates waiting for him to say something. He laughed a bit before he shook his head. A few let out groans. Jeff shrugged.
He was disappointed, obviously, but he was going to continue to work for his team. He finished stripping from his practice equipment and headed for the showers. He washed off the sadness he was feeling. He needed to keep the smile on his face until he was away from his team.
He walked back into the dressing room to put on his clothing before heading back to his house. He heard yelling as he made his way in. Jordan sat in his stall, watching his older brother lash out.
Jeff made his way to his stall beside Eric's. The angry captain looked at the smaller guy. Jeff kept his head down. He loved Eric like a brother, but was terrified of him.
"I'm sorry you didn't make it. The Canada reps," He sighed. "They don't know what they need."
Jeff gave him a smile. "It's okay. We'll just kill it for the rest of the season." He chimed.
Eric chuckled. "You're a good kid. You deserve a spot." He stated, sitting down. "I've done my run. I just wanted you to have a turn."
"Like you said, I'm a kid. There's still time." Jeff winked.
Eric nodded before he and Jordan both went to the showers. Jeff let out a sigh. He let the smile fall from his face. He changed into his normal clothes in the empty dressing room.
He put on a pair of jeans, with a red 'Carolina Hurricanes Hockey' t-shirt. He put a black zip up over it. He found his phone in his pocket.
He checked his notifications as he walked to the parking lot. A few tweets, app updates, and texts. He spotted one from Faith, times a few hours ago. She was his best friend from back home. She could always cheer him up.
Faith: Keirstyn's going to California and not taking me. I'm pissed.
Jeff smiled at that. He was always hearing about the things her best friend, Keirstyn, was doing. He knew Keirstyn but not as well as Faith.
Jeff: maybe I'll fly ya down during the 2 weeks I have off in Feb
He got to his car and started his drive home. He played with the radio but all the stations were talking about his team and who had and hadn't made the Olympic rosters. He shut it off. He didn't need the reminder.
He walked in his door before his phone began to ring. He took his shoes off and reached into his pocket. He slid it and pressed it to his ear.
"Hey." He greeted.
"You didn't make it?" Faith sighed.
Jeff smiled. "No, but there's still plenty of time." He reassured her.
"Okay, knock off the act, Jeffrey." She growled. "I know you're not that alright."
He exhaled. "It fucking sucks and I feel like a disappointment." He admitted.
"Jeff, you're not a disappointment. The Olympics are stupid and you're too good for their team." Faith growled.
"You don't understand." He frowned.
They saw eye to eye on nearly everything. This wasn't one of them. Faith understood hockey was important to Jeff, he knew that much. She appreciated his devotion to the sport, but didn't entirely understand it. She didn't see it the same way he did.
"The Olympics are the most important thing to happen to an athlete. It's the greatest accomplishment. I don't even get to help Canada achieve a gold medal."
She let out a groan. "Come home so I can give you a hug." She demanded.
Jeff laughed a bit. "Come see me." He said.
"When? I'd need some time to get it off." She explained.
"The Olympic break. We can just hang out for two weeks." He told her.
"I'm there and I'm all yours."
A month past and Faith was on her way to Carolina. Jeff picked her up from the airport, taking her out for dinner before he brought her back to his house.
He swore she'd looked the same since they met in elementary school. The only thing that had changed about her was her hair, her glasses, and her braces. She now had shoulder length hair that was her natural dark brown, with contacts instead of glasses, and perfect teeth.
Jeff thought they had become friends in the first place because they both looked a lot younger than they were. They had both looked twelve since they were fifteen.
"So how are you feeling?" She asked as she chewed.
"I'm feeling. I bet I'll cheer up now that you're around." He grinned.
She gave him a smile. "Those are my intentions. I live to see you happy."
Jeff felt his stomach flip. That's when it all made sense to him. Faith could always cheer him up because she was all he could ever think about. He was always thinking about her because he wanted to be with her.
He watched her eating. She looked up at him. Her eyes narrowed. He just smiled at her, shaking his head as he looked down at his food. She rolled her eyes at him and he spotted it.
The drive from the restaurant consisted of the pair discussing what they were going to do for their first night together. Faith asked if they could go out and meet his hot friends. That idea was shot down instantly. Jeff asked if she was up for a simple movie night. She obliged, telling him how tired she was.
At the house, he showed her to the room she'd be staying in. Jeff went to his room, changing into sweatpants and an old t-shirt.
He went down to the living room, laying on his couch. Faith came down in pajama pants and a baggy t-shirt. She whacked his feet to get him to sit up.
"What movie do you want to watch?" He asked as he stood up.
He walked to his movie rack. He looked over his shoulder to see Faith laying face down. She mumbled something but he knew what she meant. He grabbed her favourite movie off his rack and slid it into the DVD player built into his TV.
He stood over her, hands on his hips. She rolled onto her side, smiling up at him. He smiled back, dimples full blown. He sat on the side of the couch before laying down. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her into him. She wrapped hers around his waist.
"It's good being around you, Jeff." She whispered into his chest.
"I miss having you around." He confessed.
"Well, you have me for two weeks so make it worth my time." She teased.
He just laughed. She had no idea.
