Don't Let Go

Not a Chance

When the nurses rolled my bed into my new room I had Pat on my left side holding my hand, and the rest of the Kanes following right behind. I actually thought when we went into the elevator we wouldn’t be able to fit everyone, but we managed.

“Just press the button if you need anything.” The brunette hair, blue eyed nurse said. She looked to be pretty young; she had to be a couple years older than me. “Thank you.” She smiled and walked out of the room. Pat took the chair that was in the corner and pulled it over to where my bed was. Once he got comfortable Erica practically shoved him out of her way, “Oh my gosh, Bridget! What happened? Why’d you faint? Don’t do this to me EVER again! You practically scared me half to freaken death! Are you okay?”

“Calm down Erica. I’m fine, I just got a little too stressed out and fainted no biggie.”

“Stressed out?”

I gave her a look and of course she got the point. Then it was Jakes turn to speak, yippee.

“Hey guys can you give me a minute alone with Bridget?”

Then Patrick squeezed my hand and I knew what he was thinking, no, say no, just say no! I nodded my head at Jake and Pat and the pressure on my right hand was lifted and Pat and the others walked out of the room and my heart rate suddenly went up.

“So, Bridget, I know what you wanted to tell me.”

“Yeah, I heard Pat told you. I told him that I wanted to tell you myself but he didn’t listen.”

“No, he didn’t mean to tell me, it just came out in the moment. We were both scared to death for you.”

A smile came to my face; Jake really did care for me. It wasn’t just a fling.

“Jake, I wanted to tell you earlier but I was just scared of what your reaction would be.”

“Why?”

“Because of, because of who you are. Patrick told me that all you wanted was, well, sex.”
He shook his head no, and rolled his eyes, “God Damn it Pat, every time.” I was pretty confused, “What? Wait hold on, don’t make me faint again.” He gave me a smirk, “I’ll try, it’s just that every time I meet someone, and I really start to like them it’s just little Patty gets jealous and sweeps her off her feet and makes me look like the bad guy.”

I bit my lip, he was really going to make me choose wasn’t he, I mean I want to give him a chance, but NO. What are you thinking Bridget! Snap out of it, you are in love with Pat! Not Jake! Jake is probably faking this just to make me dump Pat. “Jake, you’re a sweet guy, I know it, but this time I met Pat first and I fell for him first.” I looked down at the back of my right hand where the iv pierced my skin, “It may have happened with other girls, but I am in love with Pat, and…” I looked up at him his brown eyes looking down hiding behind his dark blonde hair.

“Jake,” I gave him a hug, “I know there has got to be a girl out there for you. That girl just hasn’t walked into your life yet. Give it time, I know she’ll come around, they always do.” We both smiled at each other and I gave him a peck on the cheek. “Thanks Bridge, you’re probably right, but we’re still friends right?” “Totally,” He walked over to the door and yelled for everyone to come back in. Of course little Patty was the first one through the door. He practically ran Jake over!

“What’s wrong? Are you okay? What did you guys talk about?” Pat whispered to me, “Calm down lover boy, everything’s fine we just cleared the air.” Breathed deeply, “Thank God, I thought I was going to lose my girlfriend!” I shook my head, “Not a chance.”

I guess they left a few hours later. I don’t actually know when they left because the medicine I was one put me to sleep when we were all watching Happy Gilmore. Except for Pat who was sleeping on the couch with his hand in mine the next day when I woke up. I smiled as I turned the TV on and watched the NHL network. I giggled a little just because it was game 6 of the Western Conference semi-finals of the playoffs of 2009, and it just happened to be that time in the 3rd when Pat scored his Hat trick.

I guess he must have heard Pat Foley say his name a billion times because he instantly woke up. “Huh, what, did you say something?” He said, eyes barely open. “No,” I smiled, “Good Morning sleepy head.” As I brushed my fingers through his messy blonde curls. He smirked, “Good Morning baby.” He stood up and gave me a kiss that must have completely woke him up. “So, Miss Bridget, would you like some breakfast?” “Yes, yes I would.”

He picked up the phone that was on my right side and ordered, “Yes, um can I have pancakes with bacon please, oh, and some extra bacon…Yes, this is room A113… Bridget Shultz… Thank you, have a great day.” He put the phone back on the receiver and sat back down on my left side and put his hand in mine.

Breakfast came about 10 minutes later and they ended up bringing an entire extra platter of pancakes, supposedly it was a mistake but somehow I think Pat did that on purpose just to get some of his own. Donna stopped by during our pancake breakfast and dropped off Mystery, Alaska. She was on her way to the store anyway and she has always been like a mom to me. “So, I guess this is why you didn’t seem to like Jake.” “Yeah, I wanted to tell you earlier but you all were pushing me towards Jake and I didn’t want to disappoint you.” “Honey, you could never disappoint me.” I smiled as she put her hand gently on my arm.

She was just about to leave when, “Oh, and Bridget I have a question for you.” “Yeah, sure what is it?” “I don’t remember who it was but they said you were pregnant, is that true?” Oh shit I forgot she didn’t know! “Um yes, it is true.” Her eyes widened, “And who is the father?” I bit my lip hard, “Well, Jake is the father. We went to the bowling alley and I had a headache, so Jake gave me a couple drinks and well things just happened.” I looked down disappointed in myself, in my choices. She must have realized that I was a little worried about her answer, “Bridget, honey, don’t worry, it’s okay, I’m fine with it. Jake has always been a little irresponsible, and besides I’m going to be the only person with experience when you blow up like a balloon.”

“Thanks Donna, I really appreciate that.” Patrick perked up, “Hey what about me! I was around when all three of my sisters were born; I have experience of going shopping with her when I was like 5.” I rolled my eyes, “Well of course you can help, Jake may be the father, but you’re going to be my baby’s daddy, right?” He kissed my hand and I took that as a yes.

The neurologist came in the room about half way through the movie, Pat ended up on the bed with me with his arm around my shoulders and my head resting comfortably on the crest of his neck. He finally gave me the okay to go home, and I was wheeled down to the front, and waited with the nurse while Patrick got the car.

“Hey, is that Patrick Kane?” She said with wide eyes.

“Yes…” I said, caught off guard by the question.

“Are you guys, like together or something, because if you’re not, I’d really like his number.”

The nurse was a blonde ditz that looked like she had just gotten out of medical school. She pissed me off with that question. Didn’t she see how he didn’t leave my side while she was wheeling me to the front of the building? Didn’t she see the connection we had? Didn’t she see how he smiled at me, when he went to get his car? Ugh! I hate girls like this. How they judge him by what the media and the blogs say. She pissed me off so much that I just snapped.

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

“What?” She said in the dumbest, stupidest, unintelligent voice possible.

“I said are you fucking kidding me?”

“Look, I don’t know why you’re cursing at me but-,”

“Look, you are never going to get his number, you’re never ever going to be together. He is with me and I am carrying his child SO BACK OFF BITCH!”

Oh crap, I shouldn’t have done that, shouldn’t have said that. Yes it was a lie but still, it was the only way to get her off mine and Pat’s back.

She got a strange look on her face, “Oh, really? Well, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have asked you for his number.”

It was silent until Pat came and the nurse “tried” to help me get up, “No, I’ve got it.” I was still a little pissed off at the girl who tried to steal him away from me. She backed off and only stood there about two feet away from me. “Here,” Pat said holding out his hand. I grabbed it and pulled me up and took me to the car. He closed my door and I slunk down into my seat, and biting my lip thinking about what I said.
