Don't Let Go

Love Drives You Mad

The next day I had my first ultrasound. Yippee back to the hospital, I should’ve just stayed there for the rest of the night. Anyway, Pat insisted he’d come because he never got to go to one of these things before and because he was going to be the guy to help raise him or her, I was okay with it.

We got to the hospital around noon and we were escorted into another white room by a nurse that reminded me of the girl from yesterday but I thank God that it wasn’t. But this girl like the other, looked at Pat the same way. Gosh people take a picture! It will last longer! The doctor came in while the nurse was preparing the machine and taking glances at Pat, who always had his eyes on me. I was wearing the white hospital gown and sitting on the table.

“So, how are all of us today?” The doctor said putting on his plastic gloves.

“I’m good, I was here yesterday because I fainted, but the doctors yesterday said everything was okay with the baby.” I said explaining the situation.

“That’s good; well my name is Dr. Kane, no relation to the man who is standing next to you.” He smiled He was a tall man, dark hair, brown eyes. Very charming I’d say he looked to be in his mid twenties. He sat down and put the jelly on my stomach. People say its cold, but man it’s REALLY COLD. It gave me chills up my spine.

“Alrighty, if you look up at the screen there’s your baby.” To be honest it didn’t look like much, yet but I still couldn’t believe that a little human being was growing inside me. Pat smiled slightly, and I knew he was just as excited as I was. Even though we were a little young we knew we could do this. Pat would be able to support the baby and me with hockey, we’d be fine.

“So, would you like to know the sex?” Dr. Kane looked at me, and I looked at Pat. “No, let it be a surprise.” But I was dying inside! I always hated surprises even though a surprise like this would be good. But still I couldn’t handle it, “Pat, but then we could have more time to choose a name if we knew the sex.” He rolled his eyes at me while I gave him the puppy dog pout, “Fine, let’s hear it doc.”

“He rubbed the nozzle on my pelvis area scoping around, “Um, well,” he paused, “Are you sure you want to know now.” I rapidly nodded my head, “Yes!” He smiled and looked back at the screen, “It’s a, a, a, girl.” I smiled from ear to ear, and Pat noticed, “I would’ve been okay either way but it looks like you were cheering for a girl.”

“Yeah, I guess so, I mean a boy would’ve been good but I’ve seen the way you are around your sisters, and you absolutely adore them and you could get her into hockey, and love her and care for her just as you do already for your sisters. Then maybe later in life when we want another baby maybe we could have a boy and he would be the hockey protégée!” He smiled and kissed the top of my head, “Yeah that sounds nice.” Doctor Kane removed the goo of my pelvis and we left hand in hand.

We got home and I got into nice warm pajamas. I wore a pair of black and red plaid pants and one of Pat’s hawks t-shirts that was a little too big for me. I thought went well with the pants. It had been a long day at the doctors today. I realized that the man I picked to raise my baby girl with would be perfect. He already is protective of his 3 younger sisters and that’s what I like in a guy. How he can be responsible even though he didn’t cause this in the first place. I came down the stairs and Pat was lounging on the couch in black Nike basketball shorts and his one goal gray shirt. I brought my yellow monkey blanket that my uncle had made for me when I was younger down with me and snuggled up to Pat and rested my head on his neck. He was watching Happy Gilmore again even though he had just watched it in the hospital with me two days ago. My eyes started to slowly close when he started playing with my hair.

The next morning I woke up around 9, sleeping on the couch with my head on a pillow on Pat’s lap. His right arm was resting on my back with his neck bent back resting on the back of the comfortable couch that we had spent the night on. I sat up and grabbed the remote and turned on the news to see what was happening around Buffalo. Then the anchorwoman said something I had never expected her to say. “Next up, a local Buffalo athlete is having a baby,” Oh Shit, “Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks who lead the Blackhawks in goals and in points, is rumored to be having a baby with a 19 year old woman who has been living with the Kanes for the past month.”

What I didn’t realize was that Pat was starting to wake up, my eyes were glued to the TV and my heart was beating faster and faster. “Good morning Bridge,” He said looking at me and then at the TV where my eyes were piercing the television. “Bridget? Why are both our names on TV and why are they talking about your baby?”

Then I said the only thing to slip from my lips, “Um… Well Pat the thing is, and you have to promise you won’t get mad at me for this because this might push you over the edge.” He hugged me, “Come on Bridget what could you have done that would make me be mad at you for more than a day?” I pushed my blonde bangs back out of my face, “Um, the thing is that after the doctor’s appointment the other day when you went to get the car, I was waiting for you with the nurse who wheeled me out, and she wanted your number and I just couldn’t give it to her.” I paused and bit my lip, “And I exploded and I told her that I was kinda…pregnant with your baby.”

“Wait, what?”

I took a deep breath, “I kinda, well, I guess I might’ve, I think it just slipped out and kinda sorta told her that I was pregnant with your baby…”

He was silent, “Pat, I’m sorry I thought at the time that telling her that would get her off our backs by telling her that she would never be with you, and just, I’m sorry I ruined your squeaky clean reputation, and now everyone knows about it.” Tears started rushing down my face as I looked down twiddling my fingers. “Bridge, come here.” He put his arms around me and I cried in his gray shirt, “I’m not mad, this isn’t that big of a deal, it’s not like I beat up a cab driver or anything. It’s just that I’m having a baby with the woman I’ve loved ever since I first saw her.” I looked up at him and smiled, “And besides the guys will give me some crap about it like they always do so what.”

He wiped the tears from my eyes, “Is everything okay now? I’m ok, I’m not worried, and you shouldn’t be either.”

A small smile came to my face as the doorbell sounded. “You wanna watch a movie?” I asked walking towards the front door of the Kane household. “Yeah sure, I get to pick it though!” “Deal,” I said reaching for the door knob.

That small smile that I had seconds before suddenly disappeared in an instant, “Hello Bridget, I heard a little rumor about you, you care to tell me about it?”
