No Sense of Direction 010:

Chapter Ten

-Katrina-

We sat in the lawyer’s office and stared at him as he looked over the will that belonged to my Mother and Father. He explained to us that this is like any other traditional will that these were already organized and planned out. My brothers and I each got a large shoe box, along with my Uncle Dan and Aunt Jane.

“I’ll step out of the office to allow you to read them,” he said and then I watched as he stood up and left.

I heard the lids coming off of the boxes and I looked at the box down at my lap, I couldn’t open it, I don’t think my heart could bare reading it. I could already hear Chris crying and I closed my eyes and gripped the box, holding it close to me. I heard my Uncle curse, probably not expecting to get what my father had given him, whatever it was. My Aunt was quiet, but I could clearly hear her whimpering. I slowly turned my head towards my Zach and saw that he was staring at the letter that was placed in front of his face. I could see the pain and sorry and knew that he was going to storm out of the room.

Bingo, Zach stood up and practically ran out of the room with everyone but myself staring as he went. I just looked down at the unopened box not wanting to know what was in it.

“Kat, what was in yours?” Chris asked and I shook my head, “Did you not open it?”

“No,” I muttered and then stood up and placed the box on the desk, “I don’t want to know,” I said and then walked out of the office and followed after Zach wondering if I was going to regret my decision to leave the box.

I left the lawyer’s building and saw Zach over by the car that we all took her. I walked over towards him and wrapped my arms around his neck. He looked down at me and then dropped the box and wrapped his arms around my waist and laid his head on my shoulder.

“I can’t do this, Katrina,” he whimpered and I nodded my head then closed my eyes to try and stop the tears that were escaping my eyes, my brother had finally broken down.

“I’ll be all right,” I said and then pulled away and wiped the tears that were flowing down his face, “It’ll be all right, Zach.”

“What did they tell you?” he asked and I sighed and shook my head.

“I didn’t open it,” I said and he looked at me.

“Why?”

“I don’t want to read it,” I said and he sighed and nodded his head, “What about your letter?”

He shook his head and then I saw him shove the letter into his pocket, “It’s nothing.”

“All right,” I said seeing that he clearly didn’t want to talk about it.

“Go get Chris, we’re gunna head home,” he said and I nodded my head and then walked back into the building and headed towards the office.

“We’re leaving,” I said and Chris looked at me and then nodded his head.

“Here,” he said and then handed me my box.

I shook my head and then took the box and looked down to see a trash can, “I don’t want to,” I said and then threw it into the trash and then grabbed my brother’s hand and left after telling my Aunt and Uncle goodbye.

-Dan-

I watched as my niece and nephew left the office. I sighed and then stood up to grab the box that Katrina had thrown away and put the lid back onto the box.

“They’re really not taking this well,” Jane said and I shook my head and looked back towards her.

“Did you?” I asked referring to when her parents passed.

“No, I suppose not,” she said and I nodded my head, “Will she open it?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t think that she should get rid of it,” I said and Jane stood up and nodded her head.

“You’ll take it to her?”

“Of course.”

“You know, I think out of the three of them, she’s taking this the hardest,” Jane said and I looked at her, “She might not show it on the outside, but on the inside she’s broken.”

“She’s regretting moving to Boston and living her dream,” I said, speaking the truth, “She might not have told me, but I can see it just by looking at her.”

“Is she going to go back?”

“I don’t think so, or at least not stay,” I said and looked out the window and saw that the siblings were getting into the car and pulling out of their parking spot, “I was talking to Zach and he said that she might finish the season with the Bruins and then come home.”

“You should give her some work,” Jane said and I looked at him, “Isn’t your trainer, physician, whatever they’re called retiring?”

“It all means the same,” I said and then nodded my head, “He’s finishing the season with us, but he left us an intern.”

“Any good?”

“Not from what the guys tell me,” I said and then shook my head.

“Well maybe she can work for you,” Jane said and I sighed.

“Working with family is never good,” I explained and she scoffed.

“You know you want her and that’s that! I hear constantly that she’s one of the best out there! She’s smart, has a fresh mind and eyes,” Jane said and I nodded my head, “She can be a big asset to you, Dan. Especially since your boys are known for their injuries.”

“My boys can handle their own,” I said and then sighed and looked down at Katrina’s box in my hand, “What are we gunna do with those three?”

“You’ll figure it out,” she said and I snorted.

“Thanks for the help,” I said and she smiled.

“I’m in Nashville with the Predators, what do you want me to do?” she said and I sighed and shrugged my shoulders, “So is Lucic her boyfriend?”

“I don’t know,” I said confused with that whole relationship, “You know Katrina, she’s had boys chasing after her as soon as she hit puberty.”

“Lucky girl,” Jane said and I sighed.

“Not for her father and brothers,” I said and she laughed.

“Who is it now?”

“I got Crosby in lala land around her, freaking that Staal giant, of course Lucic, and I’m pretty sure just any horny guy that sees her!” I said and then rubbed my fingers through my hair.

“To be young again.”

“Yeah,” I laughed and then shook my head.

“How’s your son, Dan?”

“He’s good, a little crazy at times, but good,” I said and she smiled and nodded her head.

-Katrina-

We got home from the lawyers and I walked towards the stable to go and see the horses. I felt alone because this morning I dropped Milan off at the airport because he had a game tonight. Zach’s team left last night and Zach was going to be leaving in two days.

I whistled as I walked into the stables and saw Balto and Lola pop their heads out from their stalls and I smiled, “Hey guys,” I walked over towards then and then opened Balto’s stall and walked him out, “You’re my good boy.”

I took my jacket off because it was pretty warm out and I only had a tank top, jeans and sneakers on. I leashed up Balto and then grabbed the brush and walked back over towards him. I was brushing Balto’s neck when I heard the stable door open. I didn’t move because I thought it was one of my brothers.

“Katrina,” I heard and knew that it wasn’t one of my brothers.

I popped my head out from behind Balto and my eyes widened when I saw my Uncle Dan standing there, “What’s up?” I asked and then saw that he was holding my box that I had thrown out in his hands.

“Thought you might want this,” he said and then placed it on the bench by the door, “You might regret not reading it. I know I might have if I didn’t read mine.”

“I-“

“There’s no rush,” he said and then I watched as he turned around and walked back out of the stable.

I stared at the box and then slowly walked over towards it. I picked it up and then walked over towards Balto, “Let’s go for a ride.”

I put his saddle on and then hopped up and trotted out of the stable with the box tucked under one arm. I headed down the green path and went to my secret spot.
