Chapter Twenty Eight

-Sidney-

“I’m feeling sexy and free, like glitter’s raining on me. You’re like a shot of pure gold, I think I’m ‘bout to explode…”

I heard someone singing and turned around on my seat to see that it was Kat, she was sitting in the back of the bus engrossed in her work on her laptop, singing to herself, and probably not realizing that she was singing out loud.

“Rock my world into the sunlight; make this dream the best I’ve ever known. Dirty dancing in the moonlight, take me down I’m a domino…”

I saw that her singing had gotten some of the guys attention and they were also turned in their seat staring at her, but she still didn’t notice our gaze, she was just typing away on her laptop and looking at some notebooks that were propped up next to her.

“What’s she going?” Kris asked and I shrugged my shoulders.

Her singing wasn’t loud, but when you’re on a bus, heading to New York to play against the Rangers as your first game in the season, no one really wants to talk; they just want to focus on mentally preparing themselves for the new season. So when you could possibly hear a pin drop, it was so quiet, Kat’s singing was definitely not to go unnoticed, especially since it didn’t sound bad at all.

“Go say something to her,” Marc asked from the seat behind me.

“Why? She looks like she busy on her laptop,” I said and he shrugged his shoulders.

“What is she doing anyways?” Tanner Glass asked and this time I shrugged my shoulders.

Her fast typing stopped and I looked back to see that she was staring at the notebook and looked confused by something. Kat rubbed her face and then sighed and started to type again, ‘…Something’s bothering her…’

Two weeks have passed since Kat’s physical, and luckily no one knew about my little incident, which I was happy about, because if the guys ever found out, I would never be able to live it down.

Everyone got Kat their x-rays and MRI’s and we were all cleared for contact. Deryk Engelland though kind of ticked Kat off because he kept forgetting to bring the papers in, so Kat wouldn’t let him even skate on the ice until he did. She was definitely going to be a tough trainer, but I knew that the guys respected her for that. We soon learned that she actually cared about what happened to us, and she took our insecurities into advisement when it came to the physical, which I knew that the guys’ wives and girlfriends appreciated.

I heard Kat growl in frustration and then looked back to see that she was staring at the notebook again and shaking her head. She sighed and then grabbed her phone and texted someone, ‘…I wonder what’s wrong…'

“Spent the last year, Rocky Mountain Way, I couldn’t get much higher, ‘n out to pasture, think it’s safe to say, time to open fire,” she sung and I smirk as I knew that song, “And I don’t need the ladies, crying ‘cuz the story’s sad, uh huh. Rocky Mountain Way, is better than the way we had, yeah yeah yeah…”

“What, is she going all rock star on us?” Kris teased and I smirked.

“Well you’re tellin’ me this and you’re tellin’ me that, change it up every day, you say it doesn’t matter…”

“Good song,” Tanner said and I laughed and looked at her.

“Go talk to her,” Kris said and I sighed and nodded my head.

I got up out of my seat and moved passed Kris and headed towards the back of the bus, seeing the guys that noticed me smirk and I shook my head.

“Hey,” I said and then moved my hand by her because she didn’t hear me since her headphones were on.

“Hey,” she said smiling towards me and then taking her headphones out, “What’s up?”

“Nothing much,” I said and then sat down next to her when she moved her bag, “What’s all this?”

“Bills for the stable,” she said and then looked at the papers and notebook in front of her, “I’m trying to do my monthly add up.”

“Why do you look frustrated?”

“Because it’s not adding up right,” she sighed and I looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, there’s supposed to be a certain amount of money in the stable bank account, and there isn’t,” she said and then handed the notebook to me. I looked at all of the notes, trying to figure out what it all meant, but accounting wasn’t my strong suit.

“So money is missing?” I asked and she nodded her head.

“I don’t understand where though, I look over all of the bills, and I’m very good with my money. But the account is five hundred less than what it should be,” she growled as she stared at the laptop.

“Well you did say that you had a helper, does she have access to this account?” I asked and Kat looked at me.

“Yeah, but I trust Dana, I know she would never steal from me,” I said and then sighed, “She’s been with my family for a long time now.”

“Well didn’t you just hire a new girl?”

“Sam?” she asked and I nodded my head, “Sam’s a guy.”

“Oh,” I said and then shrugged my shoulders, “Didn’t know.”

“Yeah, and he’s a serious pain in my ass,” she whined and I stared at her.

“Why?”

“He’s absolutely no help at all, and none of the horses want to go near him.”

“So he might be your thief,” I stated and she shook her head.

“He’s only in charge of cleaning the stalls, Dana and I are the only ones that deal with the money and accounts, she runs to the bank in the morning if we get cash for something,” Kat explained and I looked at her confused.

“What would you get cash for?”

“The local farmers like to use the horses shit for fertilizer,” Kat explained and I nodded my head

“Yeah, I didn’t know you could do that,” I laughed and she smirked towards me.

“Yeah, I’m just your typical farm girl slash hockey trainer,” she laughed and I smirked.

“Nothing unusual about that,” I teased and she saw her phone going off and looked at the text, “What is it?” I asked when I saw her take a deep breath and then rub her face.

“A farmer came the other morning and gave Dana cash, she was suppose to go to the bank, but had to leave for a family emergency. She marked it in the book that we got the cash, but I never saw it in the cabinet, and she never took it to the bank.”

“You think that Sam kid took it?” I asked and she shrugged her shoulders.

“The only reason I hired him was because he’s Dana’s cousin and she said he needed work,” Kat explained and I bit my lip, thinking that this kid was the one that was stealing from Kat.

“It’ll be all right,” I said and she nodded her head.

“Yeah, I need a break from this, I’ll finish it at home,” Kat said and I smiled, “Are we almost there?”

“Yeah, about an hour,” I said and she smiled and nodded her head.

“I hate bus trip,” Kat mumbled as I watched her pack her laptop, notebook and papers into her backpack and stuff the pack under her seat.

“Me too,” I said and she laughed and then turned in her seat to face me.

“So are you ready for your first game?”

“Definitely,” I smirked and she laughed and then saw her unplug her headphones from her phone and roll them up, “So you sing?”

“Huh?” she asked confused.

“The guys and I heard you singing, you’re good,” I said and smiled when I saw her face go a little red.

“Sorry, I have a habit of singing out loud and not realizing it.”

“It’s fine, it was nice,” I said and she laughed, “Loved how you listen to Godsmack.”

“Oh you heard Rocky Mountain Way?” she laughed.

“Good choice!” I heard Kris yell from the middle of the bus and we looked to see his arm in the arm and the guys laughed.

“Quit eavesdropping!” I said and Kat laughed.

“I’m not the only one!” Kris yelled and then I realized that no one was talking and everyone’s head was turned so that their ears were facing us.

“Unbelievable,” I muttered and Kat laughed harder.

“You guys are too much,” she smile and I looked over towards her.

“So we better than those Bruins?” Brandon Sutter asked as he turned around in his seat two rows in front of Kat.

“On the bus, you’re definitely more entertaining,” she said and I smirked.

“Just wait until you get us on a plane!” Marc yelled and I laughed.

“Oh, I think I’m scared,” Kat said and she looked at me.

“You should be.”
