No Sense of Direction 049:

Chapter Forty Nine

“He’s down!” the ref yelled and I pushed passed one of the boys that sat on the bench.

I looked onto the ice and saw that Sidney was staring at the ice and there was blood on the ice. I hopped over the wall and landed on the ice, making my way over towards Sidney and dropped to my knees, placing my hand on his back and looking down.

“Sid, can you hear me?” I asked and he nodded his head and then groaned, “All right, where were you hit?” he pointed towards his jaw and then I saw him spit out blood, “Can you get up?”

Sidney nodded his head and I looked up and saw that Pascal was there. He helped Sidney up and I gave him a towel that he quickly placed over his mouth. They skated over towards the bench and Sidney walked off of the ice and headed into the locker room.

Less than two minutes into the away game against the Islanders, I wasn’t even at the bench yet before my name was being called because someone was hurt. I never thought that it would have been Sidney, and when I looked over the replay, he was hit hard. His own teammate, Brooks Orpik accidently hit him and I’m pretty sure that he felt horrible.

I walked into the locker room and saw Sidney sitting on the table. I walked over towards him and dropped the bucket in front of him. He moved the towel and I heard someone walk into the room. I turned my head and saw that the Assistant Coach had brought a cup in, Sidney had lost three teeth, they looked like they were in good tacked, so they could be surgically implanted back in.

“Well congrats Sid, you finally lost teeth,” I smirked and looked back towards Sidney to see that his eyes were closed and breathing through his nose, “Hey, on scale one to ten?” he held up all of his fingers and I looked at him confused, “Can you talk?” he shook his head, “Look at me.”

Sidney looked at me and I ran my fingers through his hair and brought them down the back of his neck and under his chin. He flinched when I touched his jaw and I gulped, ‘…Broken jaw…’

I sighed and then grabbed my cell and called the airport to get a jet ready because we were heading back to Pittsburgh, and then I called the hospital and told them be prepared for Sidney because he possibly had a broken jaw, which would explain why he wasn’t talking.

Sidney was taken away and I ran back towards Uncle Dan and told him that I was going with Sidney because he was going to go into immediate surgery if his jaw was really broken.

“No, I need you to stay here,” he said and I sighed and then looked back towards the Sidney walking out of the locker room with the EMTs.

“Uncle Dan,” I said and he looked at me and I looked back towards Sidney.

“Fine, go,” he said and I looked back towards him and nodded my head.

-Dan-

“Any word on Sid?” I asked as I was on the phone with Katrina.

“He has a broken jaw, he just got out of surgery, he’s sleeping,” she explained and I sighed, “Who won?”

“We did,” I said and then I heard her sigh.

It was the next day and we were all getting ready to leave the hotel and head to the airport to head back to Pittsburgh. We were all worried about our Captain, our star player, and finding out that he had a broken jaw, wasn't good, we would be losing him for at least the whole month of January.

I was down in the lobby, watching as one by one my team came in looking tired. I sighed and then waited for the bus to show up that was going to take us to the airport and heard one of the guys calling me.

"How's Sid?" Flower asked and I sighed.

"Broken jaw, probably gunna be out for a while," I said and Flower cursed and then I looked over towards Orpik to see that he looked like he didn't get any sleep.

"Hey, it was accident, it happens," Geno told Brooks and he nodded his head.

Geno was right, it was an accident, stuff like this did happen, it just sucked that it had to happen to Sidney, '...At least it's now and not towards the end of the season...'

The bus showed up and I turned back to see that the whole team was here, "All right ladies, let's get moving!"

-Katrina-

"You still hurting?" I asked and Sidney shook his head, "Probably the numbing," I sighed and felt Sidney lace his fingers with mine, "You have a broken jaw, you're gunna be out for at least four to six weeks."

Sidney was glaring at the bed and I sighed and ran my free hand through his hair. He leaned into my hand and I kissed his forehead.

"It's gunna take a while for you to get back to your old strength. You've been put on a liquid diet," I said and he sighed. Sidney pointed towards his head and I shook mine, "You don't have a concussion."

Sidney seemed to have a relieved face and I smiled and kissed his hand, "Hey, just like Tyler, I'm gunna take care of you, I'll make sure that you're back up to strength to play again."

Sidney nodded his head and I kissed his cheek, hearing the door open behind me. I turned and saw the nurse and she walked in and handed me Sidney's file.

"The doctor would like to talk to you," she said and I nodded my head and watched as she walked out the door.

"I'll be back," I said and he nodded his head, "I was serious Sid, I'll make sure that you're back to strength, but you're gunna have to listen to me and do everything that I tell you. You can't half fast it because you're anxious to get back out onto the ice," I explained and he sighed and nodded his head. I smirked and brought my lips to his ear, "I'll take special care of you."

I laughed when I saw Sidney smirk and then his face turn a little red. I wink towards him and then walked over towards the door and walked out, finding where the doctor was and wondering what he wanted to talk to me about.

-Sidney-

"How are you feeling?" Coach asked me as I walked into the arena.

"Pretty good," I muttered.

I was able to talk, though it was very hard because my jaw was wired shut. Most of the time I just texted my response to someone, or nodded my head because they asked me a yes or no question.

"Well I know the boys miss you," he said and I nodded my head.

They lost the two last game, and the loss was bad, I was worried about them. Me being here was Kat's idea, she thought that with them seeing me, and showing them that I was going to be all right, would maybe boost their spirit, or at least get them to focus on the game more.

Kat told me that I would definitely have to talk with Brooks, because he just felt horrible about what happened. I didn't blame him, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, it was a fluke accident, I know my teammate would never purposely do that.

"Sid!" I heard and smirked towards my team as the skated over towards me.

I walked over towards the bench and leaned against the wall. Everyone was asking me questions all at once and I held up my hands trying t get them to slow down.

"You guys do realize that it's hard for him to talk, right?" I heard and looked to my side to see Kat walking up, standing on the bench and walking around me, "Keep the talking to a minimum, don't wanna strain your jaw."

I nodded my head and then looked over towards Brooks to see that he was standing in the back of the crowd.

"So is Kat taking good care of you?" Flower asked and I nodded my head.

"Yeah I bet she's especially taking 'good' care of you," James smirked and I rolled my eyes and heard the guys laugh.

I looked down towards Kat and saw that her face was red and I smirked because he was right, she was taking really good care of me, in more ways than one, but she was also putting up with my crap too, which I was grateful for. I could see now why Tyler personally asked her to help him with his rehab.

We talked a little about the last two games and how we only managed to score one goal in both games. After a while, they went back to practice and I had Kat call Brooks over because I couldn't really yell. She patted my back as he skated over and I patted his shoulder and smiled towards him.

Sure I was frustrated over this situation, but it was an accident, "It's ok."

"Sid, I'm so sorry-"

"It's ok," I repeated and he sighed, "Accident."

"You hurry up and get better, we need you out here," he said and I nodded my head and held out my hand, "Thanks."

I nodded my head and pushed his shoulder, telling him to get back out there. I looked over towards Kat who was leaning against the glass and smirked towards her. I walked over towards her and kissed her forehead.

"I know it sucks, Sid, but you'll be back out there soon," she said as I sighed and stared at the ice, wishing I was out there with my teammates.
