Through the Dark
New Friends
I was greeted by loud and cheerful 'hi's as I walked into my favorite bar. I walked over to the bar counter and ordered a mug of beer. I waited for the bartender to bring my drink, looking around the happy customers and waitresses weaving through the people and tables.
It wasn't a huge bar or anything, it was pretty small. Made out of wood, letting in small strokes of sun shine through the narrow spaces between the wood. Hey, it was a cute little bar outside of a forest-- what'd you except for it to be like?
The bartender gave me my mug and I gave him a twenty. I walked over to my favorite table, which was always empty, since it was tucked in a corner by the door, where the sun can't reach to.
With a sigh of relief, I extended my legs on the bench and leaned against the wall and began to enjoy my drink. A nice way to spend my afternoon.
A few minutes later, two guys walked in--guys I never saw before. It was really usual for new people to come in since it was a bar hard to find and all the people here are people I recognize since they come here so many times.
I wonder what they're doing here...
I continued to nonchalantly drink my beer. Then I felt the table creaking with weight next to me.
My dark brown eyes widened with surprise; I looked up and saw that I had company: those two dudes.
"Um, hi?" I said, bringing my beer down to my lap.
"Hey," said a guy with an evil look on his face and brown, kind of curly hair. "Is it okay if we sit here?"
I shrugged. "Don't you thing it's a bit too late?"
He let out a laugh. "Good one." He took a gulp of his drink. "Wow, this is pretty good beer."
"The best," I told him, even though this was the only type beer I had ever drunk in my life. "I never saw you two here before. How did you find this place."
"Uh, we just adventured..." The blond guy turned to look at the brunette guy. "How did we find this place?"
"We just stumbled upon it, that's all."
"Hmmm, okay." I nodded my head. "You like it here?"
"Very...homey," the blond guy replied. "If that's even a word."
"How did you find this place?" the other guy shot back at me.
"Uh, I go here almost every week. I live by here, that's why."
"You...live by here?"
"Yea. You have a problem with that?"
"No, it's just that there's nothing here."
"That's true. But what's your name?" I took a sip.
"Tuukka."
I made the motion to finish his name.
"Rask," he finished.
"Nice." I turned to the blond guy. "You?"
"Pekka Rinne."
"You guys have interesting names, no offense," I told them.
"We're Finnish." Tuukka took a gulp. "You have a problem with that?"
I chuckled. "No, no, I was just wondering. But Finnish...interesting."
Then there was silence, so we drank our drinks without talking.
Then, Tuukka began to talk to Pekka quietly.
"You sure?" Pekka made a weird look at Tuukka.
"Yea. Let's just try it..."
I rose an eyebrow, making a what-are-you-talking-about look.
Tuukka turned to me. "Can you check this out?" He pulled out something from his pocket and slid it to me.
I slapped it on the table, stopping it from going over the edge; I grabbed it. It was a small blade, a really nice blade. "This is really nice. Where did you get this from?"
Tuukka made a worried look. "Uhhh..."
Suddenly, I felt a vibration tingling my fingers. "Argh!" I dropped it, surprised, making it clattering onto the table top.
"What's up?" Tuukka reached over and pulled the blade back to him.
"I just felt something--"
"Vibrations?" Pekka asked me.
"Yea..." I nodded my head. "Vibrations. That's the perfect word for that..."
"Question: Do you have any powers?" Tuukka asked me, putting the blade away?
I felt my body melt into nothingness for a moment. "Powers? Supernatural powers?"
"Yea. Do you?"
My head began to tighten full of worry and embarrassment. Nobody has asked me this question and nobody knows the answer. "Uh...yea..."
Pekka's blue eyes widened. "Really?"
"Yea..."
I told you, Tuukka mouthed to Pekka. He turned to me. "What powers do you have?"
I felt myself sweating. "Oh...my..." I took a long sip and placed my mug on the table with a loud clunk. "Ummm...well..."
"Okay, okay, okay, don't stress yourself here-- Wait, what's your name?" Tuukka asks.
"Corey Crawford."
"Yea, Corey, you don't have to."
"Thanks." I smiled a bit.
"But how did you get your powers?"
"How..." I thought for a moment. How? Oh yea... "I got 'em a while ago...like a--"
"Yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, let's cut to the chase." Tuukka did some motions, motioning me to stop talking. "I should've asked the question differently: Who gave you your powers? There we go..."
"Oh, wow..." I leaned back on the wall and rubbed my chin, thinking hard. "This is a good question..."
Tuukka bit his lip. "Do you...?"
"I know how he looks like..," I told him.
"How?"
"Blond hair..."
"Kinda spiky?"
"Yes... Pretty tall..."
"Kari Lehtonen--"
I sat up straight and snapped my finger, pointing at him. "That's him. That's his name."
Pekka looked at Tuukka. "We came here for a reason..."
"Oh yes." Tuukka nodded his head. "Do you know where he's at?"
My eyes widened. "Do you think I know where he's at?!"
"Well...we have no idea wether he's alive or not," Tuukka starts. "He used to live on an island, but then it just, I dunno, it just exploded, aaaaaand we don't know where he's at. Yea."
"Huh. Interesting. But that still doesn't help me know where he would be at."
Pekka took over the conversation. "He was in a huge, white building, full of people..."
Pekka's voice faded as I thought about the loud neighbors I just confronted. They were brand new in the forest, very unexpected; they were next to a white building, a huge building...
"A huge, white building you said?" I asked.
"Yea," Pekka answered.
"I think I know where he's at, in that case..."
"Really?" Tuukka asked me with an excited look.
"Yup. Come on." I got up. "I'll take you to the building."
