One Shots

When We Were Young

Jordan laid in bed her back against the wall as she watched her favorite movie; she took a sip from her mug and set it down on her night side table. She fought back tears as Kat Stratford read her poem about Patrick to the class, she had watched 10 Things I Hate About You, a thousand times yet this part still got to her. She cuddled into her blankets as the cold February air crept through her slightly open window. She was about to get up and close it but stopped herself when she saw she received a text.
“Meet me at the pond.” It had been sent from an unknown number but Jordan knew exactly who it was, she threw her covers off of her and quickly got dressed.
She slowly closed her backdoor as she left, it was 11pm and she didn’t want to wake up her parents and be asked thousands of questions about where she was going. She quickly walked down her street wanting to reach the pond as fast she could, she couldn’t wait to see him.
As Jordan approached the pond she smiled to herself as she saw him, she ran towards him and jumped into his arms giving him a tight hug, he spun her around before putting her down.
“What are you doing here?” She asked trying to contain her excitement; she looked up at her favorite pair of blue eyes.
“I got drafted here!” Jake explained, Jordan squealed in excitement and hugged her best friend, she was extremely proud of him.
They sat down on the bench as they looked out at the pond where they had shared so many memories, Jordan had grown up in Minnesota with Jake, but after her parents had moved to Toronto she only got to see him when he would come up for Christmas break.
They had gone skating on this pond thousands of times; Jake had been the one to teach her how to skate, well he’d leave her in the middle of the pond and force her to learn how to skate back to him.
“Do you remember how we first met?” Jake asked as he looked over at Jordan, the wind was blowing her blonde hair in different directions; he grabbed it and pushed it back so he could see her face.
She nodded her head, “Sabrina’s 6th birthday party, you grabbed my hand and wouldn’t let go.” Jordan laughed as she thought of a tiny little Jake grabbing her hand and dragging her around with him.
“You can’t forget her 14th birthday party.” Jake mentioned, they had all sat in a circle playing spin the bottle and it was Jake’s turn, he spun the bottle and hoped it would land on Jordan.
“Our first kiss.” Jordan blushed; she remembered being shocked as the bottle stopped right in front of her, Jake leaned over and gently kissed her. She blushed as her friends hollered over the kiss, truth be told Jordan had a massive crush on Jake at the time.
“And I asked you out two days later.” Jake smiled to himself as he thought about the time he practically ran up to Jordan at lunch and asked her out. She had said yes obviously, they had dated until they were 16 and had to call it off when she moved away.
“Things were so simple back then. Remember all the times you’d sneak out to come to one of my games, or when we’d go out for pizza and milkshakes at 1am.” Jake laughed reminiscing some of the great memories he had with Jordan.
“We were young and in love.” Jordan looked up at Jake and smiled; “Now we’re old.” She joked.
“And still in love.” Jake added, Jordan blushed and nervously bit her lip. Jake leaned in and kissed her, something he hadn’t done since they were 17. She playfully shoved him after pulling away; she got up from her seat and ran onto the ice.
Jake ran after her, he slid onto the ice and grabbed her from behind; he picked her up and spun her around. She squealed as Jake slipped and fell back onto the ice, she fell on top of him and laughed as she looked at him. She leaned down and locked her lips with his again.
“What are you kids doing?” Someone shouted, they looked up to see an older man walking towards them, they got up and ran. They cut through the forest and stopped running once they were safe, they both laughed as they tried to catch their breath.
“Just like when we were 16!” Jake laughed.
“You mean the time we got caught out past curfew and had the police drive us home.” Jordan had been grounded for a whole month after that incident.
“Will you ever let that go?” He teased and playfully shoved her; she tripped over her foot and fell back into the snow. She gasped as the cold shot through her body, Jake bent down to give her a hand and she pulled on it pushing him down with her.
“Oh, you’re going to regret that!” He threw snow at her and she retaliated by getting on top of him and shoving snow in his face. They rolled around as they playfully fought in the snow.
“Give up!” He demanded. He was on top of her holding her hands down so she couldn’t fight back.
“Never!” She laughed; she stared at his big blue eyes and smiled, “I missed you, you know.” She mumbled.
“I missed you too.” He admitted, he got up from the ground and helped her up. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close to him as he walked her home.

“I had a great time tonight.” Jordan smiled as they reached her home, “Just like when we were young.”
“When we were young and still together.” He added as he ruffled pieces of snow out of her blonde hair.
“Well we’re together now.” She pointed out; Jake smiled as he thought about what to say.
“Will you be my girlfriend?” He blurted out; he blushed as he realized he had actually said the words out loud.
“Of course!” Jordan smiled and jumped into his arms as she attached her lips to his.
