One Shots

Kenzie tapped her fingernails against the counter top, she sat on the stool waiting for her best friend to arrive home, she subconsciously checked the time on her phone as the minutes passed by. She caught a glimpse of today’s date as she put down her phone, April 1st, also known as April Fools day.
Her head shot up as she heard the front door open, Patrick walked through the door dropping his equipment bag on the floor and made his way over to her, he said hello before kissing her cheek.
“How was practice?” She asked, Patrick groaned and went on and on about the practice drills that had drained all his energy.
“I’m going to change.” He announced, he walked over to his bedroom and searched his drawers for clean clothes.
Kenzie grabbed her phone off the counter and made her way over to the couch, she sat down and made herself comfortable in front of the TV. Patrick walked out of his room in fresh clothes, he jumped onto the couch beside Kenzie and lay down, he rested his head on her lap as he watched the TV screen.
She ran her fingers through his hair; she played with his hair as they both watched the screen, Kenzie smiled to herself as she looked down and noticed Patrick had fallen asleep. She untangled her fingers from his hair wanting to let him sleep peacefully, he stirred as she moved her hands away.
“Don’t stop.” He mumbled, Kenzie playfully rolled her eyes and continued to play with his hair at his request.

Kenzie’s eyes crept open as she adjusted to her surroundings, she fell asleep shortly after Patrick had, she lifted her head off the couch and sat up, she looked around her empty apartment and called out for Patrick. She got up from the couch just as their apartment door swung open, she looked over at Patrick who had arrived with a box of pizza and a few cans of pop, he kicked the door closed with his foot and placed the items on the counter.
“How long was I asleep?” Kenzie asked as she rubbed her eyes still a bit drowsy from her nap.
“About an hour, you looked so peaceful I didn’t want to wake you.” He explained, Kenzie nodded understanding.
She grabbed plates for the both of them and sat down across the counter from him; she passed his plate to him, and grabbed the box of pizza. She opened the box and began to chuckle as she read the words written on the inside of the box.
“Kenz, will you be mine?”
Patrick and Kenzie had a tradition since they were both 7 years old, every year on April fools he’d ask her to be his girlfriend and every year she’d say yes, and every year he’d say April Fools. It’s been something they had done since they were kids and the tradition still lived on.
“Patrick Kane it’d be an honor to be yours.” Kenzie laughed, she grabbed a slice from the circle and took a large bite.
She chewed down her pepperoni pizza as Patrick watched her, “Aren’t you going to say April Fools?” She asked as she swallowed her food.
He shook his head, a huge grin on his face, “Not this time.” Kenzie raised an eyebrow confused; she placed her slice of pizza on her plate waiting for him to explain.
“Kenzie this isn’t an April fools joke, I’ve wanted you to be my girlfriend since we were 7 years old when I asked you out on the first of April but got too scared and said it was a joke and ran away before you had the chance to say anything.” He admitted.
Kenzie laughed to herself, she remembered that day all too well, she remembered his bright pink cheeks after he had asked her, and the way he ran off so quickly that she didn’t even have a chance to think.
“You’ve been my best friend for years and I’ve been in love with you ever since, I’ve finally gathered up the courage to ask you to be my girlfriend, and if you say no we can just pretend this was another joke but if you say yes we-“
“Patrick!” Kenzie cut him off from his rambling, she held his face as she cupped his cheeks with her hands, “I love you, and I always have, you were just too blind to see it.”
“I love you,” He repeated her words, he pressed his lips against hers, finally being able to kiss the girl he’s loved for over 15 years, he pulled away from the kiss and smiled, “So will you be my girlfriend?”
Kenzie nodded, “Of course.” She pressed her lips back to his.
