When the Night Finds the Morning

Promission to Blessing

Pushing down on the peg on top of the faucet, the water from the shower head above stopped. Now the only sound in the bathroom was from the fan on the ceiling above.

Keltie pushed back the shower curtain and grabbed her white towel that hung on the hook next to the shower and dried herself off the best she could. When she was somewhat dried she wrapped herself in the towel. then grabbed the second one, and ran it all around her wet dark blonde hair.

“Kelso.”

Said a small voice from the hallway.

“Yeah Hank?”

“You need to get out here. You’ll never guess who’s in the kitchen!”

“Gretzky?”

“No, I wish. Just get your butt out here.”

Then little footsteps ran down the hall and then Keltie exited the bathroom, and hurried into her bedroom down the hallway, away from the kitchen.

Once safely behind her closed bedroom door Keltie got dressed. She grabbed a clean thong and bra out of her dresser drawer. Keltie threw the white towel on the bed and turned around to open another dresser drawer. She rummaged through the wooden drawer and grabbed her pair of short black tight LuluLemon volleyball shorts. She picked up a white shirt that had text written across the front that read:

“Calgary Stampede 2009”

Keltie walked over to her bedside table, picking up a gray hair tie then whipped her hair down then back up quickly. Her hands went to her hair putting it in a bun on top of her head. When her hands were free she grabbed the braided pink, white, and purple Under Armour head band.

Being fully clothed Keltie left her room and walked down the short hallway. Coming to the intersection in the hard wood hall, she could either go into her dad and step mom’s bedroom or towards the front door. walking towards the front door, she called out her little brother’s name. She could hear him talking but she couldn’t place a finger on who the other voice was.

“Why did I have to hurry my butt out here?”

She asked turning to look into the kitchen/dining room. her dad stood on the side of the island counter where he was more in the kitchen, his hands on the counter’s edge, with a beer can in front of him. hank was sitting in one of the two tall island chairs, his blue eyes looking on the man with the only brown eyes in the whole room that were looking at her.

There sitting next to her brother was a man who she had only seen on a TV screen and not in person in almost three years.

“Jamie.”

Was what Keltie was able to say.

“Hey Kels.”

That was all he needed to say until she turned on her heels and hurried back to her room. Footsteps followed her back to her room, she had no need yo turn to see if it was Jamie or not, she knew it was him. She went straight for her bed and let Jamie walk in behind her and shut the door. The door shut and Keltie crossed her arms and legs, so she was in the Indian pose, and she looked up at Jamie. While he leaned up against the door and looked down at her.

“Well hi.”

She said flat out. Jamie chuckled at her and shook his head.

“Hey yourself.”

“So three years. Almost nothing. Now you are in my bedroom. Explain.”

“I’m here to talk to you.”

“Well no shit.”

Another chuckle came from Jamie. He looked down at the floor and then back to Keltie.

“Well feisty pants, you sure don't change.”

“Shouldn’t you be in Dallas?”

“I should, but I’m not.”

“Clearly. Don’t you have to leave for-”

“Sochi. yes, I leave in four days. I’m well aware of my plans. Out of everything I could be doing right now, I’m here in your bedroom.”
“Could you sound any more creepy?”

“You know I can Kels.”

This time Keltie laughed. As she looked up at him she noticed all the features she remembered about him were melting away with their time apart. He’s cheeks weren’t as big as she remembered. Jamie had lost a great amount of his facial baby fat from his younger years. A slight beard was setting in around his cheeks and neck. A scar was noticeable on his cheek, a battle wound from his day job. There were little bags under his brown eyes, proof that the Olympic nerves had set in.

Jamie cleared his throat, ripping her blue eyes from him.

“I’m here to ask you’ll come with me.”

“Where?”

Jamie just gave her a look. A look that meant that she damn well knew what he was talking about.

“What? To Sochi? Sochi, Russia. As in the host for the 2014 Winter Olympics?”

“That’s the one.”

“What about your family?”

“They don’t want to risk it.”

“How do you know if I want to go or not? How do you know that I’m scared too.”

“I saw your tweet. What was it? How’d you do anything to the games. We’ll here I am offering you a plane ticket.”

He said putting his hand behind him, then pulled a plane ticket from behind his back, with a sinlge flick of his fingers the one ticket turned into two.

“Jamie…”

Keltie said with her jaw on the floor. She stood up, took the step towards him, then took the tickets from his hand. Her eyes frantically reading the black text on the thick paper.

“Jamie. What- why?”

“Because I want you… to experience this.”

Jamie studded the last part, wondered if he would put those last three words in the sentence. Keltie smiled up at him and giggled. Jamie smiled and took a deep breath.

As he looked down at Keltie and couldn't help but smile. He was mad at himself for not talking to her for the past few years. She was almost everything he remembered. His brown eyes wandered over the parts of Keltie he could see. Her legs still looked as toned as they did three years ago, maybe even better. Her skin was still the pale ivory colour that he always loved. As his eyes continued to rome up her body, his eyes stopped when he noticed that she wasn;t wearing a bra. Jamie closed his eyes for a brief second and let out a slow breath.

“Jamie. Oh, my God. I just… holy shit.”

Keltie looked up at Jamie through her eyelashes and bit her lip slightly

Again Jamie closed his eyes and bit his lip, he let out a quiet groan. Jamie wanted to throw her on the bed and have his way with her. But he couldn't, he hadn’t talked to her in years, and her dad was in the other room.

“Keltie.”

He said in a low voice as he looked down at her again. Keltie’s blue eyes looked up from the tickets into his big brown puppy eyes that hadn’t changed.

“Yeah?”

Jamie moved his hands to her arms and slowly moved them up and down. Keltie didn't even need to hear his question, she knew what he wanted to ask.

“I’ll go.”

Jamie smiled again, showing his dimples off for the world to see. Keltie wrapped her arms around his waist. Jamie let out a light laugh and let his arms go around her.

Keltie rested her head against Jamie’s chest and couldn’t help but smile. However as she let her head rest on his chest she couldn’t help but feel how much stronger he felt. Along with Jamie’s arms wrapped around her somewhat small waist, Keltie could feel the muscles under his skin. Keltie looked up, seeing Jamie’s chocolate eyes looking right back at her.

“Jamie?”

She didn;t mean for his name to come out as a question, but it just rolled off her tongue like that. He went to answer then a knock on the other side of the door sounded throughout the bedroom.

“Kelso. Jamie. I don’t need to come in do I?”

The booming voice of Keltie’s dad said.

“No. I was just leaving.”

Keltie said untangling herself from Jamie, then opened the door to see her dad in the hallway. He stood with his arms crossed with his red and silver beer can in his hand. A look that only a protective concerned father could give was on his face.

“Is everything okay?”

Keltie smiled and nodded. Her dad gave her a weird look until she pulled out the tickets. With his beer free hand Ken took the cardstock like paper and read the lettering, like his daughter did minutes ago. When his brain made the connection he looked at his oldest child’s smiling face, then back to the now worried faced NHL player behind her.
“Jamie… I can’t.. Kelso you need to clear this with Leo.”

“I’ll do that right now. It’s his shift right now.”

Keltie turned around, rushed passed Jamie and back into her room. Quickly she came back out in gray sweatpants and a tight dark blue long sleeve Horny Toad jacket. Rushing past her dad she hurried in putting her sockless feet into her gray Uggs. Her hand on the door handle and sunglasses in the other, she called out to the house.

“Be back in a minute.”

The door opened then shut.

Now Ken looked from the tickets in his hand to Jamie.

‘Not to sound ungrateful, but what the hell? You don’t talk to my daughter for three years, then you show up with plane tickets to the Olympics. What’s your game, Jamie?”

“First of all sir, I’m sorry about not talking to Keltie. Looking back on it the only thing I can think of is that I’m busy.”

Ken took another sip of his beer, never taking his eyes off of Jamie.

“Second, I’m trying to restore the relationship me and your daughter once had.”

“Which was?”

“Uh, when I say relationship I mean friendship. We weren’t ever romantically involved.”

“Why not? Is my daughter not good enough for you Jamie?”

“No, no, no. Not at all sir. Keltie has, er, always been a beautiful woman. I don't understand why she hasn't been swept off of her feet sooner.”

Jamie said almost stuttering. When he finished he met the cold stare of Keltie’s father’s hunting icy blue eyes.

“She hasn't because of assholes like your linemates back in Dallas. Plus I’m here to stop any asshole that doesn’t plan on taking care of her.”

Jamie could feel the palms of his hands start to sweat.

“Um, right sir. Does she have your permission to go?”
“It’s more like you have my blessing to take her.”

“Right sir. Thank you.”

Ken nodded at the young man and a slight smile came to his face as he looked down at the tickets in his hand.

“Hank’s out in the driveway shooting at the garage door. I think having an NHL star show him some pointers might make his day.”

A smile come to Jamie's face as he nodded.

“I’d love to sir.”

Ken handed Jamie the tickets. Jamie took them and put them in the back pocket of his jeans again.

“I’d sure love it if Hank would stop hitting my truck. But other than that he’s a great shot.”

“I’ll be sure to work on that sir.”

Jamie and Ken parted ways and Jamie went to the front door and took his running shoes from the closet. Before leaving the house he went over to his luggage that sat in the concor of the dining room and grabbed a few of the sticks that he brought with him from Dallas. With the sticks in his hand he exited the house and could hear the shots that were bouncing off the metal garage door. He smiled to himself, memories of his childhood came back to him as he walked towards the front of the house to join Hank for target practice.

Entering the marina pub Keltie’s eyes looked for her boss Leo. Only a handful of patrons were in the pub due to the fact that it was two in the afternoon and most of the patrons who came in were still on the clock.

“Keltie! My favorite girl!”

She smiled and saw Vladimir Smirnov, one of the regulars. He was a friendly older Russian fisherman who loved Keltie and wanted her to marry one of his sons.

“Hey Val have you seen-”

“Kelt what are you doing here your shift doesn’t start till eight.”

Leo said walking out of the small back kitchen. Keltie hurried over to him as he walked over to the bar and stood there wait for Keltie to come over to him.

“Oh, my God Leo. I’m going to have to ask you to give me the next two weeks off.”

“Kelt. You know if you’re going to take a vacation you have to notify me three weeks in advance.”

“But Leo, I was told of this vacation like, ten minutes ago.”

“Is your dad going to Mexico again and he need you to go fishing with him again?”

“No. Better than Mexico.”

“Amuse me. Where’s better than Mexico. Cobo?”

“Sochi.”

“Russia? That’s not a vacation.”

“The Olympics Leo! I have to go!”

“Who’s taking you?”

“An old friend. I have to go. We leave in the morning.”

“Jeez, that doesn’t give me any time to think about it.”

“That’s why I couldn’t wait till tonight.”

“You don’t fool around, eh?”

“Leo! Come on, I’ve almost never take a day off, please! I bring you back a signed jersey or something! All I want are two weeks.”

Leo chuckled and looked away from her for a second, so he was not look at her blue puppy dog begging eyes.

“I’ll see you at wight. And I want both men’s and women’s signatures. Don't hold out on me Kelt.”

“Oh, my God. Really! I won’t let you down. I promise!”

Keltie almost yelled giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“Yeah, yeah. Remember eight till last call.”

“You ask for too much of me. Thanks Leo.”

“Do I hear that my Keltie is going to the mother country?”

Vladimir asked walking over to the two.

“Yes sir! I’ll be sure to get you something Vlad.”

“I want a Russian jersey. Make sure to have the team sign it.”

“Will do Vlad.”

Keltie said giving him a kiss on the cheek.

“I’ll see you at eight Leo! Bye Vlad.”

“Bye Snezhok!”

Leo called out his goodbye as she ran out of the pub like she was Charlie Beckett in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

She was going to Sochi for the Olympics. Not only was this her fourth Olympics she has attended in her life, this time she was going to go alongside Jamie. Being with on Jamie’s side was an idea that was sounding better and better the more she thought about it.
