*Alex's POV*

I was just leaving Thomas's room after he had fallen asleep when my best friend and co-worker Cassie waved me over.

"What's up." I asked her when I reached the front desk.

"That guy's been asking for you." She said pointing over to the waiting area where I saw Brendan sitting.

"Do you know him?" She asked.

"Uh yeah." I said tearing my gaze away from him looking back at her. "He was here for the Habs annual hospital visit last week."

"Now what did you do to get a hockey player asking for you?" She said hands on her hips.

"Nothing." I said flushing a deep red.

"Alex.." She started accusingly

"I didn't do anything I swear." I said "Besides you know I'm not that kind of girl."

"I'm just joking." She said looking over my shoulder before back at me "But don't look now he's making his way over."

"What?" I said whipping around running into someone.

"We've got to stop meeting like this." Brendan laughed looking at me.

"Sorry." I blushed looking down. "That was my fault. Again."

Brendan smiled looking down at the ground before turning back to me.

"So, what are you doing here?"

"I've actually been building up the courage to come here." He answered. "I wanted to ask you something."

I nodded my head indicating that he could ask as he took a deep breath.

"What time do you get off work?"

"In about two hours." I said "Why?"

"Do you want to go out to dinner with me? Tonight?" He said looking nervous as he bit his lip.

I could feel a lump in my throat as I gulped.

"Listen Brendan I..."

"Would love to." A voice said.

I whipped around to Cassie who ignored me smiling at Brendan.

"She'd love to." She grinned turning to me.

"Right Alex?" She said giving me a look that said. Just say yes

Cassie had been my best friend since we were kids and she was alway's encouraging me to go out and have fun.

I was more of a homebody type of girl, and she alway's scolded me for it.

She was almost like the sister I never had.

I glared at her for a minute before turning back to Brendan.

"I'd love to." I lied.

It wasn't that I didn't like Brendan, I did but I just didn't want to see him get hurt.

He seemed like a genuinly great guy and I didn't want to pull him into a situation that even I was still struggling with.

Yet here I was agreeing to go to dinner with him.

I was already skating on thin ice.

"You look beautiful." He complimented taking my hand as he led me out of my apartmnent.

"Thank you." I blushed looking down at his hand still holding mine.

"Where are we going?" I asked as we exited the building.

"Dinner." He replied

"I know that." I smiled "I meant where are we having dinner."

"That's a surprise." He said turning to me and grinning.

"Is it far?"

"Not to far." He said turning a corner "Just a couple blocks away."

I nodded my head as we continued walking looking around the neighborhood trying to ignore the way his hand tightened around mine every so often.

"So." Brendan says

"So." I reply

"Tell me about yourself."

"There's not much to tell." I shrugged.

"Oh come on." He said bumping shoulders with me.

"Okay." I laughed "What do you want to know?"

"Everything." He said "Family, Friends stuff like that."

"Well." I started "I don't have any siblings, so no brothers or sisters. It's really just been me and my dad for a while now, my mom died when I was 9."

"I'm so sorry." Brendan said rubbing his thumb across my hand.

"It's okay." I said looking down. "It was a really long time ago."

"Don't you miss her?"

"Every day." I smiled sadly "But I know she's in a better place now."

I looked up at Brendan and we locked eyes as I try to look away but I find myself unable to tear my gaze away from his.

He cocks his head to the side his eyebrows knitting together in confusion almost as if he's trying to solve something before he laughs a little looking away.

"What?"

"Nothing." He said as we continue walking.

"Tell me." I groaned pushing him lightly.

"I've never met anyone like you." He said looking at me.

"Right." I replied rolling my eyes "Do you tell all the girls that?"

"No." He responded surprising me a bit as I look at him seeing his expression unwavering.

"Your different, most of the girls I meet aren't after anything but my money...or getting into my pants so I don't know." He shrugged "I guess it's just nice to see someone that has a personality, and a pretty face to go along with it."

"A pretty face and a personality eh?" I smile "Is that what you've deemed me as?"

"Yup." He grins

"For now, until I get to know you better."

I laughed before looking back at him. "What else do you wanna know?"

"Passions." He said

"Passions?"

"Yeah, stuff your passionate about." He said before adding "Something your really into."

"I've been a hockey fan my whole life."

"No way." He said looking at me in disbelief.

"Yup." I smile "Does that surprise you?"

"Yeah it does actually." He admits

"Well." I said shrugging.

"Who's your team?"

"That's where this." I said gesturing between the two of us "Gets a little complicated."

"What do you mean?" I looked at him biting my lip hoping that he would catch on.

"Oh no." He said "The Bruins?"

"What? No not the Bruins." I dismissed the idea quickly looking up at him again.

"Oh my god." He groaned when he finally caught on. "The leafs?"

"Yup." I replied with a smile popping the 'p'

"Why?"

"Born and raised." I shrugged.

"When did you move out here?"

"Five years ago." I replied "Me and Cassie both."

"Well then." He said looking over at me "I guess I'll just have to work a little harder to bring you over to the right side."

"Good luck buddy." I snorted raising my chin confidently as he just shook his head laughing at me.

***

Dinner had gone much better than I thought it would. I found conversation with Brendan easy.

And as we climbed up the front steps to my front door a thought suddenly occured to me.

I really liked him.

That was the one thing I wanted to avoid happening tonight, If there was one thing I wanted to prevent from happening it was exactly that.

But as we reached the final step and he turned to me I felt my stomach do flips as he watched me with that lopsided grin I found myself falling in love with.

"Did you have fun?" He asked breaking me from my thoughts as he slipped his hands into his pockets.

"Uhh yeah." I smiled nervously "I had alot of fun."

"Good." He whispered before taking a step forward and tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

Just when I though he would take a step back he dipped his head and suddenly his lips were inches from mine, I drew in a ragged breath turning my head just as he leaned in and closed my eyes when his lips came in contact with my cheek.

I looked back up at him seeing a look of hurt on his face making my heart ache.

"Goodnight." I said in barely a whisper fumbling a bit with the door knob before opening it and rushing in closing the door behind me.

I took a deep breathe as I slid down the door. Thoughts were running through my mind a mile a minute and if there was one thing I was sure of it was that I really liked Brendan.

And I had no idea what I was going to do about it.
