Say You Like Me

Nine

Prom. Prom is the thing that every girl dreams about when they’re younger. Brenna and I had been looking forward to it since we were freshman. The fact that it was finally here made me overjoyed. Having not only the perfect dress, but the perfect date was just icing on the cake.

Brenna and I had planned to leave school as soon as possible and get our hair and nails done. Then we would go to my house and get ready. Our dates would come over at six to take pictures and take us to our prom. I could barely get through school; I was so nervous about tonight. When I walked out to my car, Brenna was already standing there.

“Took you long enough!” She joked as I unlocked the car and we got in. We drove across town to the salon that happened to be owned by Brenna’s sister-in-law, Jennifer.

“There you girls are,” Jennifer exclaimed as she saw us walk through the door, “hurry in, those girls over there are dying to take your spots!”

Over our shoulders we saw other girls from our school in the waiting room giving us death glares as we sat down by the sinks. Brenna and I exchanged a look and laughed at them. Sometimes it felt good to be envied.

We got our hair washed, trimmed, and styled before heading across the street to the nail place. After our mani-pedis we returned to my house.

“Hi girls!” My mom yelled from the kitchen where she was most likely preparing dinner for my dad and brother.

“Hey mom!” I bellowed as I ran upstairs to my room, eager to get ready.

“Hi Mrs.B!” I heard Brenna yell behind me.

We walked into my room and smiled as we saw our dresses hanging from my closet door.

“Makeup time?” Brenna asked. I nodded and went into the bathroom to lay out all of our makeup while Brenna put on Pandora.

An hour later we got into our dresses, put on all of our accessories and shoes, and put the last minute hair spray on our styled hair to make sure it at least stayed until pictures were over. It was quarter to six when the doorbell rang. My mom answered the door and from upstairs, we heard the boys walk inside and my mom gush over how handsome they looked. She called our names and just like Brenna and I had planned, we slowly walked down the stairs that led to my front door. I walked down first and smiled when I saw my mom tearing up. My smile became even wider as I saw Gabe standing there. I walked up to him and shyly looked up, hoping he’d like the dress.

“You’re the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.” Gabe said as he hugged me and kissed my cheek.

“Well I have to look good to compete with my sexy swede.” I smiled at him.

“You win. There’s no competing with you.” He smiled back. I turned back around to see Brenna walking over to a dumbfounded Jeff.

“I’m speechless. You literally took my breath away.” I heard Jeff say to Brenna and I instantly fell happy for her. She deserved someone like Jeff.

“Picture time!” My mom announced and we all walked out to my front yard.

We took about a thousand pictures before finally saying goodbye to my parents and getting into Jeff’s car. We drove to Sarah’s house to take pictures with Ryan and a bunch of other kids that were there.

“I mean I’m always down for a cat fight, but I don’t think you want to ruin your dress.” Gabe joking whispered to me since Sarah was the girl Ryan cheated on me with.

“I’m over it. Ryan definitely isn’t worth ruining this dress.” I whispered back and lightly kissed Gabe on the lips hoping he would get the message that I love the way everything turned out.

Once we got to Sarah’s we took about a thousand more pictures and my mouth was hurting from smiling so much. The only thing that made me feel better was Gabe standing right beside me.

We dragged ourselves back to Jeff’s car, already tired. I slouched in the back seat and Gabe knew something was up.

“What’s wrong, babe?” He asked, tucking my bangs behind my hair.

“My feet hurt from the heels and I already feel tired.” I said quietly.

“Heels suck.” Brenna mumbled in agreement.

Gabe smiled and pulled out the water bottle that was resting in the cup holder in front of him. Then he reached into the back and looked around in Jeff’s hockey bag until he found a small white bottle. He poured out some ibuprofen for both Brenna and me. We both took them and shared the water bottle.

“I love you so much. You’re literally perfect.” I commented and kissed him again.

“I’d do anything for you.” Gabe whispered in my ear and sent shivers down my spine.

We continued driving towards the venue that our prom was being held at. I took a few pictures of us in the car, and of Gabe and me. I leaned against Gabe and we drove closer and closer to our prom. I was certain tonight would be one of the best nights yet.
